Rhinitis as the Presenting Symptom of Pineal Region Epidermoid Tumor: A Case Report.
We described a 34-year-old man who came to our allergy clinic with a chief complaint of clear rhinorrhea from his left nostril with more than four years of duration. Onlyhypertrophy of left inferior concha was found in the clinical examination. His rhinorrhea aggravated when bending forward. So we were suspicious of CSF rhinorrhea. MRI was done for him and demonstrated a large tumor in the pineal region. The patient underwent surgery with resection of the mass via an infratentorial-supracerebellar approach. This case showed the role of maintaining differential diagnosis for a common complaint; rhinitis which is seen as usu...

Class 3 semaphorin in angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis.
Authors: Bussolino F, Giraudo E, Serini G Abstract Semaphorins were originally identified as axon guidance molecules involved in the development of the neuronal system. However, accumulating evidences have clearly demonstrated that the semaphorin system is not restricted to the brain but supports functions of other organs. Here, we review the rapidly emerging functions of sempahorins and, in particular class 3 semaphorin, in vascular and lymphatic systems during the development, tumor angiogenesis and ischemic revascularization. Bevacizumab for malignant brain gliomas. Which is the current evidence?
Authors: Koukourakis GV Abstract Recently, the improvement of innovative medications named focused treatments represents the consequence of a superior knowledge of the procedures implicated in the modification of physiological tissues in tumor. Focused treatment is known as the therapy which uses specific substances that affect selective mechanisms implicated in tumorigenesis and tumor development. Angiogenesis is important for tumor development and distant metastatic disease and represents a significant aim for modern biological substances. Bevacizumab belongs to humanized recombinant antibody family which obviate...

When It's Not A Sunburn But A Sun Allergy
As it gets warmer and people start spending more time outside, I have more and more patients coming into my office and complaining of a “sun allergy.” A sun allergy is really a layman’s term, which refers to a number of conditions when a rash occurs on skin that has been exposed to the sun. These are also referred to as photosensitive disorders or photodermatoses, and can be broadly categorized into the following medical terms: idiopathic photodermatoses, exogenous photodermatoses, photoexacerbated dermatoses, genetic photodermatoses, and metabolic photodermatoses. Sounds complicated, right?  A...

Interaction of allergy history and antibodies to specific Varicella zoster virus proteins on glioma risk
Abstract Glioma is the most common cancer of the central nervous system but with few confirmed risk factors. Glioma has been inversely associated with chicken pox, shingles, and seroreactivity to varicella virus (VZV), as well as to allergies and allergy‐associated IgE. The role of antibody reactivity against individual VZV antigens has not been assessed. Ten VZV‐related proteins, selected for high immunogenicity or known function, were synthesized and used as targets for antibody measurements in the sera of 143 glioma cases and 131 healthy controls selected from the San Francisco Bay Area Adult Glioma Study. Glioma ca...

Cerebral angiography using gadolinium as an alternative contrast medium in a patient with severe allergy to iodinated contrast medium.
We report cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) using Gadolinium in a patient allergic to iodinated contrast media. A 77-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for surgical resection of a brain tumor. Although a DSA was requested as a preoperative examination, the patient had a history of allergic reaction to non-ionic iodinated contrast medium. Therefore, DSA was performed using Gadolinium. The DSA showed no tumor stain and normal venous drainage. The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumor and was discharged with no new neurological deficit. DSA using Gadolinium was useful in a patient with an ana...
