Safe administration of the seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine to children with severe egg allergy.
CONCLUSION: TIV administration is safe even in children with histories of severe egg allergy. Use of 2-step split dosing appears unnecessary because a single dose was well tolerated. PMID: 23176882 [PubMed - in process]

Position document IgE-mediated allergy to egg protein.
Abstract Egg is the food that most often causes allergy in young Spanish children, with an incidence of 2.4-2.6% in the first 2 years of life. The prevalence of sensitisation and allergy to egg is greater in children with allergy to cow's milk and in those suffering atopic dermatitis. The protein component from egg white is the cause of the allergic response in child. The major allergens in egg white are ovomucoid and ovalbumin. Most of the allergic reactions affect the skin, followed by gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Egg allergy is one of the most common causes of severe anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of e...

Drug and Vaccine Allergy
Most children with a history of penicillin allergy are labeled allergic and denied treatment with penicillin and sometimes other beta-lactam antibiotics. Most of these children never were or are no longer allergic to penicillin. Penicillin skin testing and oral challenge can identify patients who are not currently allergic, allowing them to be treated with penicillin. Children with egg allergy are often denied influenza vaccination, because the vaccine contains a small amount of egg protein. However, recent studies have demonstrated that children with even severe egg allergy can safely receive the vaccine, reducing their r...

Influenza vaccination and egg allergy: another step forward
Commentary on: Turner PJ, Southern J, Andrews NJ, et al.. Safety of live attenuated influenza vaccine in young people with egg allergy: multicentre prospective cohort study. BJOG 2015;351:h6291. Context The occurrence of epidemics, like H1N1 in 2009, mobilises the scientific community to focus on resolution of problems. For many years, flu vaccination was a dilemma for physicians taking care of patients with an egg allergy. The small amount of egg found in the vaccine was considered a contraindication to immunisation. However, most people with this allergy are young and asthmatic, thus clearly the ones who could greatly be...

Early-life mold and tree sensitivity is associated with allergic eosinophilic rhinitis at 4 years of age.
CONCLUSION: Allergic eosinophilic rhinitis was identified in 8.8% of children at 4 years of age. Age 3 years was the earliest that aeroallergen SPT wheal areas were predictive of AER. Skin testing at 3 years identifies children at risk for an AR phenotype with nasal eosinophilia. PMID: 25744905 [PubMed - in process]

Asthma and influenza virus infection:focusing on cell death and stress pathways in influenza virus replication.
Abstract Asthma is one of the fastest growing syndromes in many countries and is adding a huge cost to the health care system. Increasing reports have linked airway infectious diseases to asthma. Influenza is one of the most serious airway infectious diseases and in recent years there have been some serious influenza virus pandemics which caused increased fatality in numerous different populations. Diverse host response pathways during virus infection have been identified, including different cell death and survival pathways. These pathways include 1) programmed cell death I (apoptosis), 2) programmed cell death I...

Influenza vaccinations and chemosensory function.
CONCLUSION: A very small percentage of the 4554 patients evaluated (0.19%) attributed their chemosensory dysfunction to a prior influenza vaccination. No influences of the number of lifetime influenza vaccinations on the test scores were evident in the subset of 925 patients whose dysfunction was due to other causes. The seasonality of respiratory viruses in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Safety of live attenuated influenza vaccine in atopic children with egg allergy
Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) is an intranasal vaccine recently incorporated into the United Kingdom immunization schedule. However, it contains egg protein and, in the absence of safety data, is contraindicated in patients with egg allergy. Furthermore, North American guidelines recommend against its use in asthmatic children.
