The Gut-Immune-Brain Axis in Autism Spectrum Disorders; A Focus on Amino Acids
Conclusion In Table 1, an overview is presented of the complex roles of AAs described in this review regarding the microbiome-gut-immune-brain axis in ASD. Besides behavioral deficits, people with ASD are characterized by systemic inflammation, gastrointestinal immune-related disturbances and changes in the gut microbiota composition. Moreover, differences in levels of specific AAs in various body compartments, including the intestinal tract, blood, urine and brain have been reported in patients with ASD, as well as in rodent models for ASD. This review described that specific AAs can modulate the intestinal epithelial im...

This Type of Non-Dairy Milk is the Healthiest, Study Says
That almond milk latte may be delicious, but a study just published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology suggests that the trendy beverage also has some drawbacks. When researchers compared the nutritional profiles of four popular “alternative” milks, they found that soy milk came out on top—and that almond, rice and coconut “milks” all lacked essential nutrients important for overall health. Plant-based “milks” are often marketed as wholesome and appropriate substitutes for the real thing. To find out if these claims measured up, scientists at McGill University in Canada ...

Nontyphoidal Salmonella Gastroenteritis in a Tertiary Children's Hospital in Southern China: Characteristics and Dietary Considerations.
Conclusions: Salmonella Typhimurium was the predominant serotype. Most patients with nontyphoidal Salmonella gastroenteritis were younger than 3 years old. Lactose intolerance occurred frequently in children with nontyphoidal Salmonella gastroenteritis and dietary modification should be considered when diarrhea is persistent and prolonged. Mutagenicity and chemopreventive activities of Astronium species assessed by Ames test.
This study highlights the importance of screening species of Astronium for new medicinal compounds. The promising results obtained open up new avenues for further study and provide a better understanding the mechanisms by which these species act in protecting DNA from damage. However, further pharmacological and toxicological investigations of crude extracts of Astronium spp., as well as of its secondary metabolites, are necessary to determine the mechanism(s) of action to guarantee their safer and more effective application to human health. Climate Change Will Make Us Sicker And Make Our Food Less Nutritious
WASHINGTON -- Climate change will likely have dramatic effects on the physical and mental health of the U.S. population, worsening everything from the quality of our food to the severity of fires and floods in populated areas, according to a report from federal agencies released Monday. The U.S. Global Change Research Program's assessment identifies a number of ways by which global climate change is expected to pose a direct health risk to people in the U.S. and around the world. Gina McCarthy, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, said the report is meant to highlight that climate is "not ju...

This Warmer-Than-Average Weather Isn't Great News For Our Health
Spring is in the air a little earlier this year, but don’t go celebrating just yet. This year’s weather is shattering norms. Washington, D.C., for example, not only had the warmest February on record, but last month’s temps already surpassed the average records for March, too. The situation is similar for a lot of other spots across the country, and that could be bad news when it comes to public health. Experts theorize climate change may be part of the cause of this year’s early spring phenomenon, and warn the overall warming of the planet can have physical and mental health consequences....

An egg a day may prevent stunted growth in infants
Conclusion This study sounds like good news for undernourished children in parts of the world where stunted growth or being underweight are common, such as the Andean mountains of Ecuador. The study showed that eggs seem to be a safe and practical way of boosting children's nutrition in this population. But this research has some limitations. Adding one food to a diet is likely to affect the rest of the diet, too. And caregivers for the children may have given them different foods in addition to the eggs, or treated them differently in some ways. The children in the control group may also have eaten more eggs than they ...

Relevant safety aspects of raw milk for dairy foods processing
Adv Food Nutr Res. 2022;100:211-264. doi: 10.1016/bs.afnr.2022.01.001. Epub 2022 May 24.ABSTRACTThe concern with food safety in the milk chain begins with the quality of the raw milk. Due to the health hazard that this food can carry when contaminated, the focus of studies has turned to microbiological and chemical contaminants that may be present in raw milk. There is an essential concern about conventional pathogens (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus spp.) and emerging pathogens (Arcobacter butzleri, ...
