Learning Language, Un/Learning Empathy in Medical School
This article considers the ways in which empathy for patients and related solidarity with communities may be trained out of medical students during medical school. The article focuses especially on the pre-clinical years of medical school, those that begin with orientation and initiation events such as the White Coat Ceremony. The ethnographic data for the article come from field notes and recordings from my own medical training as well as hundreds of hours of observant participation and interviews with medical students over the past several years. Exploring the framework of language socialization, I argue that learning th...

Sub-second whole brain T < sub > 2 < /sub > mapping via multiband SENSE multiple overlapping-echo detachment imaging and deep learning
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acfb71. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObjective.Most quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) methods are time-consuming. Multiple overlapping-echo detachment (MOLED) imaging can achieve quantitative parametric mapping of a single slice within around one hundred milliseconds. Nevertheless, imaging the whole brain, which involves multiple slices, still takes a few seconds. To further accelerate qMRI, we introduce multiband SENSE (MB-SENSE) technology to MOLED to realize simultaneous multi-slice T2mapping.Approach.The multiband MOLED (MB-MOLED) pulse sequence ...

Deep Learning-Based Feature Extraction from Whole-Body PET/CT Employing Maximum Intensity Projection Images: Preliminary Results of Lung Cancer Data
CONCLUSION: A 2-D image-based pre-trained model could extract image patterns of whole-body FDG PET volume by using anterior and lateral views of MIP images bypassing the direct use of 3-D PET volume that requires large datasets and resources. We suggest that this approach could be implemented as a backbone model for various applications for whole-body PET image analyses.PMID:37720886 | PMC:PMC10504178 | DOI:10.1007/s13139-023-00802-9

Toward a more comprehensive understanding of organizational influences on implementation: the organization theory for implementation science framework
DISCUSSION: Organizational influences on implementation are poorly understood, in part due to the limitations of extant frameworks. To improve understanding of organizational influences on implementation, we distilled 70 constructs from nine organization theories into six domains. Applications of the OTIS framework will enhance understanding of organizational influences on implementation, promote theory-driven strategies for organizational change, improve understanding of mechanisms underlying relationships between OTIS constructs and implementation, and allow for framework refinement. Next steps include testing the OTIS f...

Diagnostic efficiency among Eu-/C-/ACR-TIRADS and S-Detect for thyroid nodules: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Among four ultrasound risk stratification options, this systemic review preliminarily proved that C-TIRADS possessed favorable diagnostic performance for thyroid nodules.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero, CRD42022382818.PMID:37720531 | PMC:PMC10501732 | DOI:10.3389/fendo.2023.1227339

Dynamic Motion and Human Agents Facilitate Visual Nonadjacent Dependency Learning
Cogn Sci. 2023 Sep;47(9):e13344. doi: 10.1111/cogs.13344.ABSTRACTMany events that humans and other species experience contain regularities in which certain elements within an event predict certain others. While some of these regularities involve tracking the co-occurrences between temporally adjacent stimuli, others involve tracking the co-occurrences between temporally distant stimuli (i.e., nonadjacent dependencies, NADs). Prior research shows robust learning of adjacent dependencies in humans and other species, whereas learning NADs is more difficult, and often requires support from properties of the stimulus to help le...

Two Computational Approaches to Visual Analogy: Task-Specific Models Versus Domain-General Mapping
Cogn Sci. 2023 Sep;47(9):e13347. doi: 10.1111/cogs.13347.ABSTRACTAdvances in artificial intelligence have raised a basic question about human intelligence: Is human reasoning best emulated by applying task-specific knowledge acquired from a wealth of prior experience, or is it based on the domain-general manipulation and comparison of mental representations? We address this question for the case of visual analogical reasoning. Using realistic images of familiar three-dimensional objects (cars and their parts), we systematically manipulated viewpoints, part relations, and entity properties in visual analogy problems. We com...

Long-form recording of infant body position in the home using wearable inertial sensors
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02236-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-form audio recordings have had a transformational effect on the study of infant language acquisition by using mobile, unobtrusive devices to gather full-day, real-time data that can be automatically scored. How can we produce similar data in service of measuring infants' everyday motor behaviors, such as body position? The aim of the current study was to validate long-form recordings of infant position (supine, prone, sitting, upright, held by caregiver) based on machine learning classification of data from inertial sensors ...

Peritoneal Dialysis Patient Training Program to Enhance independence and Prevent Complications: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSION: There are a variety of strategies for dialysis training concerning duration, session length, patient-to-trainer ratio, timing, methods, location, compliance, and the need for retraining. More evidence is needed to assess the impact of PD patient training programs on self-care capabilities and peritonitis incidence. Future studies should investigate the effects of training programs on compliance, self-efficacy, and patient and nurse perspectives.PMID:37720493 | PMC:PMC10505035 | DOI:10.2147/IJNRD.S414447

The effectiveness of self: A meta-analysis of using self-referential encoding techniques in education
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that incorporating self-referential encoding techniques on negative materials shows an aversive effect. Overall, there is a universal benefit to using self-referential encoding techniques as an appropriate design guideline in educational contexts. Implications for teaching practice and future directions are discussed. Further studies are needed to investigate the effectiveness in more diverse educational and teaching situations.PMID:37722845 | DOI:10.1111/bjep.12636

Disentangling accelerated cognitive decline from the normal aging process and unraveling its genetic components: A neuroimaging-based deep learning approach
Conclusion Our deep learning model was demonstrated effective on extracting relevant neuroimaging features and predicting individual cognitive decline. We reported a novel variant (rs144614292) within the NELL1 gene. Our approach has the potential to disentangle accelerated cognitive decline from the normal aging process and to determine its related genetic factors, leveraging opportunities for early intervention.PMID:37720047 | PMC:PMC10503860 | DOI:10.21203/rs.3.rs-3328861/v1

TrkB-mediated sustained neuroprotection is sex-specific and ER α dependent in adult mice following neonatal hypoxia ischemia
Conclusions: These observations provide evidence for a therapeutic role for DHF in which sustained recovery of memory in females is TrkB-mediated and ERα-dependent. However, the beneficial effects of DHF therapy did not include reduction of gross tissue loss but may be derived from the enhanced functioning of residual tissues in a cell-specific manner.PMID:37720039 | PMC:PMC10503864 | DOI:10.21203/rs.3.rs-3325405/v1
