Molecular Bases of Protein Antigenicity and Determinants of Immunogenicity, Anergy, and Mitogenicity
CONCLUSION: The epitopes of an antigen are located in surface areas; they are about 880-3,300 Da in size. They are protein, carbohydrate, or lipid in nature. Soluble antigens are smaller than 1 nm and are endocytosed less efficiently than particulate antigens. The more the structural complexity of an antigen increases, the more the antigenicity increases due to the number and variety of epitopes. The smallest immunogens are about 4,000-10,000 Da in size. The more phylogenetically distant immunogens are from the immunogen-recipient, the more immunogenicity increases. Antigens that are immunogens can trigger an innate or ada...

Dietary habits among snus users: a population-based cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: We observed that snus users had an unhealthier diet than never tobacco users. Future studies on the association between snus use and health outcomes should, therefore, consider diet as a potential confounder.PMID:37691745 | PMC:PMC10492228 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v67.9537

Plasma measurements of the dual sugar test reveal carbohydrate immediately alleviates intestinal permeability caused by exertional heat stress
J Physiol. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1113/JP284536. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this set of randomised cross-over studies was to determine the impact of progressive heat exposure and carbohydrate or protein feeding during exertional stress on small intestine permeability using a dual sugar test. In our previous work, and typically in the field, recovery of lactulose and l-rhamnose is measured cumulatively in urine. This follow-up study exploits our novel high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD) protocol to accurately quantify the sugars in plasma. Endurance-train...

Utilization of local therapeutic food in preventing and treating nutrition problems in the dry land area of the islands of east nusa tenggara province
J Adv Pharm Technol Res. 2023 Jul-Sep;14(3):253-257. doi: 10.4103/japtr.japtr_38_23. Epub 2023 Jul 28.ABSTRACTThe research aims to produce a local Pemberian makanan tambahan (PMT) biscuit formula that is nutritious, acceptable and has a good shelf life. Experimental research with RAL design used two factors and two treatments, namely the addition of anchovy flour (20% and 30%) and moringa leaf flour (20% and 30%) to 100 g of corn flour. The research was conducted in April-November 2022 with an analysis of nutritional content, and acceptability. Data were processed using SPSS with a statistical test One Way analysis of vari...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, September 11th 2023
This article reviews the current regulatory role of miR-7 in inflammation and related diseases, including viral infection, autoimmune hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and encephalitis. It expounds on the molecular mechanism by which miR-7 regulates the occurrence of inflammatory diseases. Finally, the existing problems and future development directions of miR-7-based intervention on inflammation and related diseases are discussed to provide new references and help strengthen the understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammation and related diseases, as well as the development of new strategies for clinical interventi...

Enzymatic and biophysical characterization of a novel modular cellulosomal GH5 endoglucanase multifunctional from the anaerobic gut fungus Piromyces finnis
Biochim Biophys Acta Proteins Proteom. 2023 Sep 8:140963. doi: 10.1016/j.bbapap.2023.140963. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCellulases from anaerobic fungi are enzymes less-studied biochemically and structurally than cellulases from bacteria and aerobic fungi. Currently, only thirteen GH5 cellulases from anaerobic fungi were biochemically characterized and two crystal structures were reported. In this context, here, we report the functional and biophysical characterization of a novel multi-modular cellulosomal GH5 endoglucanase from the anaerobic gut fungus Piromyces finnis (named here PfGH5). Multiple sequences alignments ...

Protecting-group free synthesis of glycoconjugates displaying dual fungicidal and plant defense-eliciting activities
Bioorg Chem. 2023 Sep 3;141:106829. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2023.106829. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA straightforward synthesis of carbohydrate templated isoxazolidines is described, by reaction of unprotected glycosylhydroxylamines (operating as 1,3-dipoles) with methyl acrylate using microwave activation. Rhamno- and erythro-isoxazolidines are recognized by plant cells, resulting in a strong ROS-production as a plant immune response, and exert a high antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea.PMID:37690319 | DOI:10.1016/j.bioorg.2023.106829
