In vitro and in vivo evaluation of two combined β-lactamase inhibitors against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii
The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of clavulanic acid (C/A) in combination with tazobactam against clinical strains of carbapenem-resistantAcinetobacter baumannii. The MIC of 24 clinical strains ofA. baumannii was determined, and a checkerboard assay and time-kill curve analysis were performed in selected strains to determine the synergy between C/A and tazobactam. The efficacy of C/A in monotherapy and in combination with tazobactam was evaluated in vitro in cell culture experiments and in a murine peritoneal sepsis model. The C/A and C/A plus tazobactam MIC50 were 128 and<1 m...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1934: Prevalence and Impact on Mortality of Colonization and Super-Infection by Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Organisms in COVID-19 Hospitalized Patients
Conclusions: Although KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and/or carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii rectal carriage, and/or bloodstream infection/pneumonia were diagnosed in a remarkable percentage of COVID-19 patients, their impact on in-hospital mortality was not significant. Further studies are needed to assess the burden of antimicrobial resistance as a legacy of COVID-19 in order to identify future prevention opportunities.

Assessment of biofilm, enzyme production and antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria from milk pre- and post-pasteurization pipelines in Algeria
Int J Food Microbiol. 2023 Sep 9;407:110389. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2023.110389. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacterial biofilm is a major concern of dairy industry due to its association with milk contamination and its derived products. Algerian pasteurized milk shelf-life does not exceed one day, which may reflect the high level of contamination of this product and presence of extracellular enzymes such as lipases and proteases. This work aimed to investigate the microbial biodiversity in milk-processing surfaces of a dairy plant in Algeria. Therefore, stainless steel cylinders were placed in piping system of the da...

Microbiome data analysis via machine learning models: Exploring vital players to optimize kitchen waste composting system
This study aims to employ machine learning models to explore key microbial genera and to optimize composting systems. After introducing a novel microbiome preprocessing approach, Stacking models were constructed (R2 is about 0.8). The SHAP method (SHapley Additive exPlanations) identified Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Thermobacillus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, and Thermobifida as prominent microbial genera (Shapley values ranging from 3.84 to 1.24). Additionally, microbial agents were prepared to target the identified key genera, and experiments demonstrated that the composting quality score was 76.06 for the treatment and 70....

Evidence supportive of a bacterial component in the etiology for Alzheimer ’s disease and for a temporal-spatial development of a pathogenic microbiome in the brain
ConclusionsThe AD-related pathogenicity of the brain microbiome seems to be based on a complex polymicrobial dynamic. The time ordering revealed a rise and fall of the abundance of C. acnes with pathogenicity occurring for an off-peak abundance level in association with at least one other bacterium from a set of genera that included Methylobacterium, Bacillus, Caulobacter, Delftia, and Variovorax. C. acnes may also be involved with outcompeting the Comamonas species, which were strongly associated with non-demented brain microbiota, whose early destruction could be the first stage of disease. Our results are also consisten...

Nitrogen removal characteristics of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacterium Acinetobacter ZQ-A1 and community characteristics analysis of its application in pig farm wastewater
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29556-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA heterotrophic nitrifying aerobic denitrifying (HN-AD) strain ZQ-A1 with excellent denitrification performance, identified as Acinetobacter, was isolated from simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) craft. ZQ-A1 was capable of removing NH4+, NO2-, and NO3-; the 21-hour removal rates were 84.84%, 87.13%, and 92.63%. ZQ-A1 has the ability to treat mixed nitrogen sources. In addition, ZQ-A1 can be well applied to actual sewage. According to the analysis of microbial community characteristics, the relative abun...

Excess mortality and long-term disability from healthcare-associated carbapenem-resistant < i > Acinetobacter baumannii < /i > infections: A nationwide population-based matched cohort study
by Chiu-Hsia Su, Li-Jung Chien, Chi-Tai Fang, Shan-Chwen Chang BackgroundCarbapenem resistance is perceived as a clinical challenge in the management of debilitated and immunocompromised patients who eventually will die from underlying diseases. We aimed to examine whether carbapenem resistance per se, rather than the underlying diseases, negatively affect outcomes, by comparing the excess mortality and morbidity from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) caused by carbapenem-resistantAcinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) and carbapenem-susceptibleA.baumannii (CSAB). MethodsThis was a nationwide retrospective matched cohort stu...

Exploring the Biomedical Applications of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Using < em > Perilla frutescens < /em > Flavonoid Extract: Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Cell Toxicity Properties against Colon Cancer Cells
In this study, we also explained the plausible mechanisms of the biosynthesis, anticancer, and antibacterial effects of PFFE-AgNPs. Overall, these findings suggest that PFFE-AgNPs have potential as a multi-functional nanomaterial for biomedical applications, particularly in cancer therapy and infection control. However, it is important to note that further research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of these nanoparticles in vivo, as well as to explore their potential in other areas of medicine.PMID:37687260 | DOI:10.3390/molecules28176431

Synergistic Role of Biofilm-Associated Genes and Efflux Pump Genes in Tigecycline Resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii
CONCLUSIONS The biofilm formation of A. baumannii may be positively related to tigecycline resistance ability because of the co-expression of the bfs gene and the AdeB efflux pump gene. The enhanced transcription level of bfs and AdeB promotes biofilm formation to improve the resistance of A. baumannii to tigecycline.PMID:37688296 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940704
