Temporally Associated Invasive Pneumococcal Disease and SARS-CoV-2 Infection, Alaska, USA, 2020-2021
We described the epidemiology and clinical course of patients who had invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and temporally associated SARS-CoV-2 infections in Alaska, USA, during January 1, 2020-December 23, 2021. Of 271 patients who had laboratory-confirmed IPD, 55 (20%) had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result. We observed no major differences in age, race, sex, or underlying medical conditions among IPD patients with and without SARS-CoV-2. However, a larger proportion of IPD patients with SARS-CoV-2 died (16%, n = 9) than for those with IPD alone (4%, n = 9) (p<0.01). IPD patients with SARS-CoV-2 were also more likely to...

Investigating the mechanism of Echovirus 30 cell invasion
Front Microbiol. 2023 Jul 6;14:1174410. doi: 10.3389/fmicb.2023.1174410. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTViruses invade susceptible cells through a complex mechanism before injecting their genetic material into them. This causes direct damage to the host cell, as well as resulting in disease in the corresponding system. Echovirus type 30 (E30) is a member of the Enterovirus B group and has recently been reported to cause central nervous system (CNS) disorders, leading to viral encephalitis and viral meningitis in children. In this review, we aim to help in improving the understanding of the mechanisms of CNS diseases caused by E3...

Influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage and associated factors in patients hospitalized with acute exacerbations of COPD in China: Findings from the real-world data
CONCLUSIONS: Influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage are extremely low. Urgent measures are necessary to increase vaccination coverage among inpatients with AECOPD in China.PMID:37488669 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002790

Pneumococcal carriage, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility in Papua New Guinean children vaccinated with PCV10 or PCV13 in a head-to-head trial
CONCLUSION: Even after PCV10 or PCV13 vaccination, children living in a high-risk setting such as PNG continue to experience high levels of pneumococcal colonization, including carriage of highly antimicrobial-resistant PCV serotypes. The study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (CTN NCT01619462).PMID:37479616 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.026

Cost-utility analysis of the use of the 20-valent anti-pneumococcal vaccine (PCV20) in adults older than 60  years in Spain
CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: In the Spanish adult population older than 60 years, the vaccination strategy with one dose of PCV20 is more effective and less expensive (dominant) than vaccination with a sequential schedule with PCV15 and PPSV23.PMID:37479615 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.016

Pneumococcal vaccine uptake among Medicare Beneficiaries aged ≥65 years following the shared clinical decision-making recommendation for 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in 2019
CONCLUSIONS: PCV13 use decreased among immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons alike, despite continued routine PCV13 recommendation for the latter group.PMID:37474408 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.034

Etiology of Acute Infectious Meningitis and Meningoencephalitis in Karachi, Pakistan: Retrospective Observational Study from a Tertiary Care Center
We report a broad range of pathogens causing ME in southern Pakistan and show a high burden of preventable illness. Synergistic actions to improve diagnostic strategies, increase vaccinations, and introduce measures to reduce water-borne and vector-borne diseases are required to reduce the ME burden in Pakistan and prevent future outbreaks.PMID:37460090 | DOI:10.4269/ajtmh.23-0182

Opportunities to accelerate immunization progress in middle-income countries
Vaccine. 2023 Jul 15:S0264-410X(23)00782-X. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.079. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere has been increasing recognition of vaccine access challenges in middle-income countries and the need for increased action, particularly in countries that are not eligible for or have transitioned out of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance support. These countries' immunization systems are more vulnerable than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates existing programme challenges, increasing the risk of delayed vaccine introductions, backsliding immunization coverage rates, and increased coverage inequity. The potenti...
