Alterations of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio contribute to NaAsO < sub > 2 < /sub > induced thyrotoxicity in human thyroid follicular epithelial cells and SD rats
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 6;264:115449. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115449. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe environmental toxicant arsenic causes various human diseases and threatens millions of people worldwide. Recently, a limited number of studies have revealed that exposure to arsenic is associated with thyroid dysfunction, indicating its toxicological impact on the thyroid gland, however, its precise forms of damage and underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we sought to observe the thyrotoxicity of sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) on human thyroid follicular epithelial cells (Nthy-ori 3-1) and SD rats, a...

A base-mediated synthesis of < em > N < /em > -hydroxy- and < em > N < /em > -alkoxyindoles from 2-nitrostyrenes
Tetrahedron. 2023 Sep 7;144:133578. doi: 10.1016/j.tet.2023.133578. Epub 2023 Aug 6.ABSTRACTSequential treatment of alkyl 2-(2-nitroaryl)-2-butenoates with potassium tert-butoxide and an electrophile, such as methyl iodide, benzyl bromide and allyl bromide, afforded N-alkoxyindoles. In related reactions, using sodium tert-pentoxide as the base with or without in situ addition of an electrophile afforded N-alkoxy- and N-hydroxyindoles, respectively. Electrophiles such as dimethylsulfate, p-tosyl chloride, and acetic anhydride afforded moderate yields of the respective N-methoxy-, N-tosyloxy, and N-acetoxyindoles, while meth...

More spice, less salt: How capsaicin affects liking for and perceived saltiness of foods in people with smell loss
Appetite. 2023 Sep 6:107032. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107032. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeople who lose their sense of smell self-report consuming more salt to compensate for a lack of flavor and enhance eating enjoyment. However, this can contribute to excess sodium intake. Capsaicin may help increase salt taste intensity and eating enjoyment in people with smell loss, but this has not been studied in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine 1) whether salt intake in those with smell loss differs from population averages, 2) whether capsaicin increases flavor and salt taste intensity, and 3) if add...

Double layer spherical Nanoparticles with Hyaluronic Acid Coating to Enhance Oral Delivery of Exenatide in T2DM rats
Eur J Pharm Biopharm. 2023 Sep 6:S0939-6411(23)00236-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpb.2023.09.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSoybean phospholipid was used as an amphiphilic material to form reverse micelles (RMs) in medium glycerol monolinoleate (Maisine) with Exenatide (EXT.) encapsulated in the polar core formed by the hydrophilic part of phospholipid. Cremopher RH40 and caprylocaproyl macrogol-8 glycerides EP/caprylocaproyl polyoxyl-8 glycerides NF (Labrasol) were added as surfactants to prepare reverse micelle-self emulsifying drug delivery system (RMs-SEDDS). On this basis, oil in water (O/W) emulsion was further prepared. ...

Combined Effects of Fluoride and Dietary Seleno-L-Methionine at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations on Female Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Liver: Histopathological Damages, Oxidative Stress and Inflammation
In this study, female zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to fluoride (80 mg/L sodium fluoride) and/or dietary selenomethionine (Se-Met) for 30, 60 and 90 days, the effects on the liver of zebrafish were investigated. The results indicated that an increase in fluoride burden, inhibited growth and impaired liver morphology were recorded after fluoride exposure. Furthermore, fluoride alone caused oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, as reflected by the increase in ROS and MDA contents, the reduction of anti-oxidative enzymes, the altered immune related enzymes (ACP, AKP, LZM and MPO) and the expression of IL-6, I...

Extracellular Perinexal Separation Is a Principal Determinant of Cardiac Conduction
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac conduction does not correlate with extracellular resistance but is biphasically related to perinexal separation, providing evidence that the relationship between CV and extracellular volume is determined by ephaptic mechanisms under conditions of normal gap junctional coupling.PMID:37681314 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.123.322567

Potential protective effects of the water-soluble Chinese propolis on experimental ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: WSP downregulates OS by enhancing the function of endogenous antioxidant enzymes like SOD and GSH-Px, that inhibit neutrophil activity, as well as diminish pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-ɑ, IL-6, and IL-9, along with mechanisms that attenuate intestinal inflammation in UC rat model.PMID:37679980 | PMC:PMC10465833 | DOI:10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.20230727.002

Treatment of salt from hides curing stage by electrocoagulation for use in the pickling stage of the tanning industry
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 6:117095. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117095. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe raw materials for the tanning industry, namely hides and skins, are preserved (curing stage) and carried with common salt, i.e., sodium chloride (NaCl). Proceeding to conversion into leather, pickling is a key stage of the tannery process, which entails high demand of water and salt. In this work, the salt-derived brine (SdB) generated from the curing of hides was treated by iron-driven electrocoagulation (EC), aiming at its later application in the pickling stage of the tanning industry, promoting a transition to zero wast...
