Conclusions pEpo-SV-HO-1 induced HO-1 gene expression and therapeutic effect in the ischemic brain. Therefore, pEpo-SV-HO-1 may be useful for site-specific gene therapy of ischemic stroke.

Kahn and Bullard “recommend that waist circumference be added to BMI [body mass index] as a primary tool for assessing adiposity.”1 Suggesting “a need for alternative approaches to anthropometry”1 is necessary because BMI incorrectly classifies obesity by 39%.2 Many adults are obese by American Society of Ba riatric Physicians criteria of body fat: ≥25% for men and ≥30% for women.3 Normal-weight obese adults have increased mortality risk from diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, cancer, dyslipidemia, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and osteoarthritis.

Hyperglycemia Is Associated with Impaired Muscle Quality in Older Men with Diabetes: The Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging.
CONCLUSION: Poor glycemic control in these older patients with diabetes was associated with significant risk of decreased muscle quality and performance status. Glycemic control with an HbA1c of <8.5% might be needed to reduce the risk of adverse skeletal and functional outcomes in this population. PMID: 27126884 [PubMed]

Association of dynamics in lean and fat mass measures with mortality in frail older women
Conclusion Low body fat or a pronounced decline in adiposity is associated with increased risks of mortality in frail older women. These results indicate a need to re-evaluate healthy weight in persons with frailty.

Correlation between tibial measurements using peripheral quantitative computed tomography and hip areal bone density measurements in ambulatory chronic stroke patients.

The effect of swimming and type of stroke on bone metabolism in competitive adolescent swimmers: a pilot study.

Chronic effects of stroke on hip bone density and tibial morphology: a longitudinal study
Conclusions There is evidence of continuous trabecular bone loss in the paretic tibial distal epiphysis among chronic stroke patients, but it tends to plateau after 2 years of stroke onset. The steady state may have been reached earlier in the hip and tibial diaphysis.

Dynamic changes in left ventricular mass and in fat-free mass in top-level athletes during the competitive season
Conclusions Changes in LVM occur in close association with changes in FFM, suggesting that the left ventricle adapts concurrently with the increase of the metabolically active tissue induced by training, i.e. the FFM. Therefore, the dynamic changes in FFM and LVM may reflect a physiological adaptation induced by intensive training.

Predictors of low bone mineral density of the stroke-affected hip among ambulatory individuals with chronic stroke
Conclusion Low BMD of the stroke-affected side hip is prevalent in over a third of individuals with lower limb motor impairments. These individuals may be at particular risk of accelerated loss of BMD at the hip from asymmetrical gait pattern and poor affected-side ankle dorsiflexor strength. These impairments are intervention targets that may be addressed during rehabilitation which includes resistance training and addresses gait impairments.
