Gender Differences in Psychosocial Stress During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Population-based Study in South Korea
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted differential impacts on psychosocial stress among working-age individuals in South Korea, with women, particularly those in urban areas, experiencing a heightened risk. The findings highlight the importance of addressing gender-specific needs and implementing appropriate interventions to mitigate the psychosocial consequences of the pandemic.PMID:37735833 | DOI:10.3961/jpmph.23.170

Phylogeography and host specificity of Pasteurellaceae pathogenic to sea-farmed fish in the north-east Atlantic
The present study was undertaken to address the recent spate of pasteurellosis outbreaks among sea-farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Norway and Scotland, coinciding with sporadic disease episodes in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) used for delousing purposes in salmon farms. Genome assemblies from 86 bacterial isolates cultured from diseased salmon or lumpfish confirmed them all as bona fide members of the Pasteurellaceae family, with phylogenetic reconstruction dividing them into two distinct branches sharing <88% average nucleotide identity. These branches therefore constitute two separate species, namely Pasteure...

Mucormycosis: update on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000000976. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mucormycosis (MCR) is a common opportunistic mold infection, and Mucorales were recently designated by WHO as priority pathogens. The interest in this infection has risen significantly since the major outbreak of MCR in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in India. Herein, we summarize recently (last 24 months) published information regarding clinical aspects of MCR.RECENT FINDINGS: The disease remains protean in its clinical presentation, difficult to diagnose, and challenging to treat. In ...

Cross-jurisdictional pandemic management: providers speaking on the experience of Nunavut Inuit accessing services in Manitoba during the COVID-19 pandemic
Int J Circumpolar Health. 2023 Dec;82(1):2259122. doi: 10.1080/22423982.2023.2259122. Epub 2023 Sep 20.ABSTRACTAcross Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic placed considerable stress on territorial and provincial healthcare systems. For Nunavut, the need to continue to provide access to critical care to its citizens meant that medical travel to provincial points of care (Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa) had to continue through the pandemic. This complexity created challenges related to the need to keep Nunavut residents safe while accessing care, and to manage the risk of outbreaks in Nunavut resultant from patients returning home. ...

Countering Mpox Vaccination Disparities in Los Angeles County, California, May-December 2022
Am J Public Health. 2023 Sep 21:e1-e5. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2023.307409. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProviding equitable access to vaccines for individuals at risk for mpox was critical for containing the 2022 mpox outbreak in Los Angeles County, California. Eligible non-Hispanic Black/African American and Latinx individuals had lower vaccine uptake than did non-Hispanic White individuals, despite having higher mpox case rates. Strategies to address disparities in vaccine uptake included using familiar messaging technology to reach individuals at risk for mpox, using partnerships with community-based organizations to raise ...

pH-dependent conformational change within the Lassa virus transmembrane domain elicits efficient membrane fusion
Biochim Biophys Acta Biomembr. 2023 Sep 19:184233. doi: 10.1016/j.bbamem.2023.184233. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLassa virus (LASV) is the most prevalent member of the arenavirus family and the causative agent of Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever. Although there are annual outbreaks in West Africa, and recently isolated cases worldwide, there are no current therapeutics or vaccines, which poses LASV as a significant global public health threat. One of the key steps in LASV infection is the delivery of its genetic material by fusing its viral membrane with the host cell membrane. This process is facilitated by signi...

Task Force for a rapid response to an outbreak of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in children in Portugal in 2022
Euro Surveill. 2023 Sep;28(38). doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.38.2300171.ABSTRACTOn 5 April 2022, the United Kingdom reported an increase of cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in children, several needing hospitalisation and some required liver transplant or died. Thereafter, 35 countries reported probable cases, almost half of them in Europe. Facing the alert, on 28 April, Portugal created a multidisciplinary Task Force (TF) for rapid detection of probable cases and response. The experts of the TF came from various disciplines: clinicians, laboratory experts, epidemiologists, public health experts an...

Prevalence of Type III Secretion System (T3SS) and Biofilm Development in Genetically Heterogeneous Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Nigeria
This study examined 430 clinical isolates from our previous work, comprising 181 MDR (multidrug-resistant) and 249 non-MDR isolates. Biofilm production and type III secretion toxins were determined using colorimetric microtiter plate assay and polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Carbapenem-resistant isolates were typed using REP-PCR and BOX-PCR. Biofilm production was detected in 386/430 (89.8%) of the isolates. Out of 386 biofilm producers, 167 (43.3%) were multidrug-resistant isolates. PCR identified four T3SS virulence types among 430 isolates, including 78 (18.1%) exoU+/exoS- isolates, 343 (79.8%) exoU-/exoS + iso...

Understanding impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on glycemic control for patients with diabetes in Japan
ConclusionAlthough the glycemic control in patients with diabetes improved overall under COVID-19 restrictions, those on insulin, GLP-1, or sulfonylureas worsened. These findings suggest the need to better understand what drives differences in glycemic control to better support people with diabetes for future epidemiological outbreaks.
