We're Not All in This Together: On COVID-19, Intersectionality, and Structural Inequality.
Abstract We are not all in this together. My 32-year history with the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States-initially as an HIV/AIDS policy analyst and now as an HIV-prevention researcher-has provided the dubitable opportunity to witness how adroitly deadly viruses spotlight fissures of structural inequality. In the late 1980s, "changing face" was the term often used to describe the epidemic's transition from one that affected predominantly White and class-privileged gay and bisexual men to one that exacted a disproportionate toll on people at the most marginalized demographic intersections: Black and L...

The COVID-19 Pandemic: A View From Vietnam.
Abstract Vietnam can be considered a success story in its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of April 27, 2020, the country has had 270 cases (225 recovered), no deaths, and no new cases for the past 10 days (since April 18). On Friday, April 24, two new cases were identified at the airport, but both cases were quarantined at arrival. We provide a few take-home lessons from the Vietnam experience. (Am J Public Health. Prisons: Amplifiers of the COVID-19 Pandemic Hiding in Plain Sight.
Abstract On February 29, 2020, nearly half of incident cases (233 of 565) of COVID-19 reported in Wuhan, China, were from the city's prison system. A separate prison outbreak, 450 miles away, in Shendong, China, was traced to officials who had visited Wuhan and infected seven prison guards and 200 inmates.1 Modern prisons have faced infectious outbreaks but none at the scale of COVID-19's. On March 26, 2020, the United States reported its first death of an incarcerated patient, in Georgia, and New York City jails reported an infection rate seven times higher than in the rest of the city, a current US epicenter of ...

Monitoring Returning Travelers During the Early Weeks of the COVID-19 Pandemic: One US County's Experience.
Abstract During the initial stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, one of the responsibilities assigned to local health departments (LHDs) was to monitor travelers returning from mainland China. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defined this intervention as "self-monitoring with public health supervision" (a full description is provided at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/risk-assessment.html). This type of self-monitoring under public health supervision for returning travelers was implemented recently with other communicable diseases, such as Ebola.1. (Am J Public Health. Publi...

Strengthening Local Food Systems in Times of Concomitant Global Crises: Reflections From Chile.
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic is superimposed on the existing challenges of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change. Currently, Chile is still facing the worst drought on record, which will continue to negatively affect agriculture. In Chile, COVID-19 also comes on top of a social crisis that began on October 18, 2019, and was driven by the cumulative effects of an economic system established by former dictator Augusto Pinochet that deregulated markets and privatized social security.1 As of March 26, 2020, Chile, already in a state of catastrophe, had reached 1300 confirmed cases of COVID-19, which catalyzed ...

Teaching Public Health Will Never Be the Same.
Abstract Students will likely be flocking to public health courses and programs in upcoming semesters. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has piqued the interest of many in society, among them college students. Students who have an interest in health, medicine, or science now may see public health as a viable career option, especially with numerous public health researchers being featured in stories and social media around the globe. Although this is an important moment for our field and discipline, universities training future public health professionals will need to recalibrate how they approach th...

Will There Be an Epidemic of Corollary Illnesses Linked to a COVID-19-Related Recession?
Abstract Currently, US unemployment claims have skyrocketed to 30 million in the past six weeks, continuing in a stark upward trend, and labor economists estimate the unemployment rate at minimally 18.3%. These unemployment figures are a feature of the COVID-19 recession that is characterized by sharp gross domestic product (GDP) growth decline. Despite the greatly damaging impact of the opioid crisis over 2015 to 2017 resulting in a decrease in life expectancy over these three years, the long-term increases in average GDP per capita from 1999 to 2018 managed to save lives on average (i.e., age-adjusted mortality ...

Producing Independent, Systematic Review Evidence: Cochrane's Response to COVID-19.
Abstract Bad advice can lead to tragedy, such as death from taking an unproven medication.1 Now, more than ever, public health policies should be based on the best available evidence. Consumers, clinicians, and policymakers need balanced information that is free of commercial influence to make decisions about the best ways to prevent the spread and manage the symptoms and clinical consequences of COVID-19. The benefits and harms of each decision must be considered. Public health measures such as isolation, quarantine, and social distancing have fundamentally changed the way we live. Publication Ethics During Public Health Emergencies Such as the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Abstract Public health emergencies require real-time, accurate information to guide effective responses. Rapid publication of information can, therefore, advance both the scientific validity and the social value of research conducted in these contexts. Consequently, medical journals place a high priority on rapidly publishing reports on these emergencies, which the media often report on to the public. Today, the focus is on the rapid publication of research related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Tomorrow, it might be an influenza pandemic or a crisis related to a vaping-related illness. COVID-19 Exposes Need for Progressive Criminal Justice Reform.
Abstract Modeling conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calculates that as many as 160 to 214 million people in the United States could become infected by the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease COVID-19) and that as many as 200 000 to 1.7 million may die from COVID-19.1 Prisons and jails are amplifiers of infectious diseases because of overcrowding and unsanitary living conditions and will most certainly contribute to these estimates. COVID-19 outbreaks have already been identified in New York City and Cook County, Illinois, jails, with infection rates at the ...

Raids on Immigrant Communities During the Pandemic Threaten the Country's Public Health.
Abstract Reports of a cluster of people with pneumonia of unknown etiology surfaced in Wuhan City, China, on December 31, 2019. In early January 2020, the novel coronavirus was isolated and identified as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the epidemic quickly spread beyond Wuhan City. In the United States, the first case was reported on January 22. By March 1, US cases had increased to 30. After one more month, US cases multiplied drastically to more than 163 000 with almost 3000 dead. On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global pandemic. The disea...

Accurate Statistics on COVID-19 Are Essential for Policy Guidance and Decisions.
Abstract Disease surveillance forms the basis for response to epidemics. COVID-19 provides a modern example of why the classic mantra of "person, place, and time" remains crucial: epidemic control requires knowing trends in disease frequency in different subgroups and locations. We review key epidemiological concepts and discuss some of the preventable methodologic errors that have arisen in reporting on the COVID-19 crisis. (Am J Public Health. Strengthening China's Public Health Response System: From SARS to COVID-19.
Abstract Today, the world is experiencing a pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus. COVID-19 is the third disease from a coronavirus to cause a global outbreak, after severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and the second that emerged from China. During the 17 years between the SARS and the COVID-19 outbreaks, China has quadrupled its share of the world economy, lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, and established a national health insurance system covering 95% of its 1.4 billion people. Will China's public heath response to a coronavirus epidemic be d...

Straining the System: Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Preparedness for Concomitant Disasters.
Abstract Just a few weeks before the first confirmed case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was reported in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a bold promise to the nation: the agency will use its scientific expertise to bring a new level of preparedness in the United States and global health security against current and growing threats, finally eliminate certain diseases, and bring an end to the devastation of epidemics.1 The current outbreak of COVID-19 reminds us how urgent this promise is and just how critical it is to continue to sustain and strengthen our nation's...
