Assessment of the effects of sex and sex hormones on spatial cognition in adult rats using the Barnes maze.
Abstract Although sex differences and hormone effects on spatial cognition are observed in humans and animals, consensus has not been reached regarding exact impact on spatial working or reference memory. Recent studies in rats suggest that stress and/or reward, which are often different in tasks used to assess spatial cognition, can contribute to the inconsistencies in the literature. To minimize the impact of these sex- and sex hormone-sensitive factors, we used the Barnes maze to compare spatial working memory, spatial reference memory and spatial learning strategy in adult male, female, gonadectomized (GDX) ma...

Ovarian responsiveness in women receiving fertility treatment after methotrexate for ectopic pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
STUDY QUESTION Does previous methotrexate (MTX) treatment for ectopic pregnancy (EP) have an effect on ovarian response in women receiving fertility treatment? SUMMARY ANSWER MTX treatment for EP does not seem to affect subsequent fertility treatment. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY MTX is commonly used to treat EPs that are diagnosed early. Previous studies have reported conflicting results about its effect on subsequent fertility treatments. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This systematic review and meta-analysis included a total of 329 patients who had participated in 7 observational studies. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, MET...

Estrogen in Cardiovascular Disease during Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
The objective of this review is to discuss evidence for the role of estrogen in both human and murine SLE with emphasis on the effect of estrogen on cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension. METHODS: PubMed was used to search for articles with terms related to estradiol and SLE. The references of retrieved publications were also reviewed. FINDINGS: The potential permissive role of estrogen in SLE development is supported by studies from experimental animal models of lupus in which early removal of estrogen or its effects leads to attenuation of SLE disease parameters, including autoantibody production ...

Tissue- and cell-specific functions of the androgen receptor revealed through conditional knockout models in mice
Publication date: 16 April 2012 Source:Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, Volume 352, Issues 1–2 Author(s): Karel De Gendt , Guido Verhoeven This review aims to evaluate the contribution of individual cell-selective knockout models to our current understanding of androgen action. Cre/loxP technology has allowed the generation of cell-selective knockout models targeting the androgen receptor (AR) in distinct putative target cells in a wide variety of organs and tissues including: testis, ovary, accessory sex tissues, muscle, bone, fat, liver, skin and myeloid tissue. In some androgen-regulated processes such as sperm...

Local N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonism in the prefrontal cortex attenuates spatial cognitive deficits induced by gonadectomy in adult male rats
In this study, intracortical drug challenge with the selective N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist D(−)-2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (APV) was combined with Barnes maze testing, gonadectomy (GDX) and hormone replacement (17β-estradiol, testosterone propionate) to explore the contributions of NMDAR-mediated activity within the PFC to hormone effects on spatial cognition in adult male rats. Previous studies have shown that Barnes maze testing reveals significant estrogen-dependent, GDX-induced deficits in spatial working memory and androgen-sensitive, GDX-induced deficits in spatial search strategy. Here...

Biomarkers of fatigue related to adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer: evaluation of plasma and lymphocyte expression
Conclusions: We conclude that fatigue induced by chemotherapy in BC patients is associated with changes in IL1-ra plasma levels and in TGF-? lymphocyte expression. Its mechanism may be different than that observed in long-term BC survivors or that induced by radiation therapy.Trial registrationNCT02041364 [ClinicalTrials.gov]

Estrogen Supplementation to Progesterone as Luteal Phase Support in Patients Undergoing In Vitro Fertilization: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract: Meta-analyses have found conflicting results with respect to the use of progesterone or progesterone plus estrogen as luteal phase support for in vitro fertilization (IVF) protocols involving gonadotropins and/or gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs. The aim of the present study was to perform an updated meta-analysis on the efficacy of progesterone versus progesterone plus estrogen as luteal phase support. We searched the MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases (up to March 18, 2014). The search terms were (estrogen OR estradiol OR oestradiol) AND (progesterone) AND (IVF OR in vitro fertilizati...

Vaginal Estrogen for Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause: A Systematic Review
ABSTRACT: Local vaginal estrogen therapy is effective treatment for atrophic vaginitis and other symptoms associated with genitourinary syndrome of menopause. However, only about half of the women reporting symptoms seek medical attention. Patients are hesitant to use vaginal estrogens despite evidence of efficacy. This hesitancy demonstrates the need for an updated comprehensive review of the efficacy and safety of both vaginal estrogens and alternatives for treating patients with genitourinary syndrome of menopause to help health care providers and patients choose the most appropriate treatment. The aim of this systemati...

Gynecomastia and drugs: a critical evaluation of the literature
Conclusion Many different medications have been associated with the presence of “gynecomastia.” Generally, it presents as a syndrome characterized by a single painful/tender breast (mastodynia) associated with breast enlargement and is transient. We suggest that these cases be referred to as an acute gynecomastia syndrome. This syndrome also occurs independent of medication use. Thus, in an individual patient, whether it is medication induced often remains uncertain. The pathogenesis remains unknown.

The effect of hormone therapy on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in women with chronic kidney disease: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
Discussion Given the high burden of cardiovascular disease in women with chronic kidney disease, this study will help guide clinical practice by summarizing current evidence on the use of hormone therapy for prevention of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular morbidity in this population. Systematic review registration The final protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42014014566).

Haemostatic and metabolic impact of estradiol pills and drospirenone-containing ethinylestradiol pills vs. levonorgestrel-containing ethinylestradiol pills: A literature review.
Conclusion E2/NOMAC exhibits less haemostatic and metabolic impact than EE/LNG and other COCs, suggesting that it may be a promising candidate to reduce residual VTE risk associated with COC use. Confirmation from a well-powered prospective clinical trial is, however, needed. PMID: 26007631 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preconception folic acid use influences the follicle fluid proteome
ConclusionPreconception folic acid supplement use is associated with suppression of the inflammatory pathway and upregulation of the HDL pathway in human follicular fluid, being a preferential source of cholesterol for steroid hormone synthesis. Studies are needed on the tissue‐specificity and on the beneficial effects of embryo quality and IVF/ICSI treatment outcome of the proteome of these pathways. This article is protected by copyright. Unique expression of 35 KDa protein in serum and cystic fluid of women with malignant ovarian cysts substantiates its role in disease progression
Conclusions Taken together these data indicate a uniquely expressed protein of 35 kDa in patients with malignant ovarian cysts that may serve as a specific protein biomarker for the differential diagnosis of the ovarian cancer. However, a much larger sample of subjects is required to validate and confirm these findings.
