The Association of Arsenic Metabolism with Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Diabetes: A Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence
Conclusions: Population level of iAs% and DMA%, but not MMA%, were associated with arsenic exposure levels. Overall, study findings suggest that higher MMA% was associated with an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, while lower MMA% was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Additional population-based studies and experimental studies are needed to further evaluate and understand the role of arsenic exposure in arsenic metabolism and the role of arsenic metabolism in disease development. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP577 Received: 01 June 2016 Revised: 26 February 2017 Acce...

Bioactive components of ethnomedicine Eerdun Wurile regulate the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines in microglia
ConclusionCollectively our data suggest that the bioactive chemical pool which is responsible for the therapeutic effects of EW can be extracted in petroleum ether, and fractionated to a relatively small multiple components. Such components include known anti-inflammatory chemicals, which may contribute to the possible microglia polarization in brain lesion during the recovery of ischemic stroke.Graphical abstract

Plasma Metal Concentrations and Incident Coronary Heart Disease in Chinese Adults: The Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort
Conclusions: Our study suggested that incident CHD was positively associated with plasma levels of titanium and arsenic, and inversely associated with selenium. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings in other populations. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1521 Received: 22 December 2016 Revised: 17 September 2017 Accepted: 19 September 2017 Published: 19 October 2017 Address correspondence to T. Hypertension subtypes and risk of cardiovascular diseases in a Mongolian population, inner Mongolia, China.
CONCLUSIONS: IDH and SDH were significantly associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases; this study suggests that carefully monitoring and actively treating the subjects with IDH should be an important strategy for CVD prevention among Mongolian population. Newly breeding an inbred strain of ischemia-prone Mongolian gerbils and its reproduction and genetic characteristics.
Authors: DU X, Wang D, Li Y, Huo X, Li C, Lu J, Wang Y, Guo M, Chen Z Abstract The Mongolian gerbil has been a useful laboratory animal in many research fields, especially in ischemia studies. However, due to the variation of the circle of Willis (COW), the ischemic model is unstable and various. To solve this problem, we newly established an inbred strain of gerbils, restricting breeding and keeping to F23. The data on the breeding and growth of the animals are described in the present study. The genetic characteristics of F4 to F20 detected by microsatellite DNA and biochemical markers are also shown here. The re...

Scientists Identify the First-Known Offspring of Two Different Groups of Early Humans, Study Says
(BERLIN) — Scientists say they’ve found the remains of a prehistoric female whose mother was a Neanderthal and whose father belonged to another extinct group of human relatives known as Denisovans. The 90,000-year-old bone fragment found in southern Siberia marks the first time a direct offspring of these two groups has been discovered, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Both groups disappeared by about 40,000 years ago. Neanderthals lived in Europe and Asia, while fossils of Denisovans are known only from the cave where the fragment was found. Past genetic studies have shown interb...

Investigation of the protective effect of heparin pre-treatment on cerebral ischaemia in gerbils.
The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism underlying the effects of heparin pre-treatment on cerebral injury in the gerbil. Materials and methods: A total of 80 healthy Mongolian gerbils were randomly divided into four groups to establish cerebral ischaemia model by bilateral carotid artery occlusion: control (no anaesthesia and surgery), sham (no occlusion), non-anticoagulation (occlusion), and anti-coagulation treatment groups (50 IU/100 g heparin pre-treated, occlusion). Gerbils were anesthetized with 40 mg/kg pentobarbital sodium through intraperitoneal injection before operation except for the...
