Saudi medical students knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs with regard to organ donation and transplantation.
This study examined whether knowledge of organ donation and transplantation (ODT) correlates with attitudes and beliefs relevant to ODT among medical students in Saudi Arabia. Two hundred and thirty-three students completed a self-administered questionnaire. A knowledge score was calculated for each student and correlated with answers on attitudes and beliefs with regard to ODT. This study revealed a complex interaction between knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs to ODT. The majority of students support ODT in general, but a significant proportion have negative beliefs when asked about specific details of the process and con...

Attendees' feedback on king abdulaziz medical city pilot chronic kidney disease education class.
Abstract Despite similar or better patient outcomes, peritoneal dialysis and pre-emptive kidney transplantation are underutilized in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, most patients with end-stage renal disease begin dialysis in unplanned fashion necessitating the commencement of dialysis using central venous catheter access. We aimed to investigate if early patient education can help in overcoming these barriers. The study is a survey-based study at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh Dialysis Center. In January 2017, we started a monthly Chronic Kidney Disease Education Class in our center. Since then, 14 classes have take...

Risk of diagnostic errors when dealing with aggressive patients: Experimental study.
This study aimed to explore whether aggressive behavior of some patients might affect physicians' clinical reasoning and decision-making. The study was conducted in a format of observation skills clinical examinations (OSCEs). It included simulating patients (SPs) and family physicians in residency training in a clinical setup. The experiment included two arms of dealing with case scenarios with "Neutral" and "Aggressive" behaviors. Explanatory variables assessed were duration of consultation, correct diagnosis, and plan of appropriate management as well as patients' satisfaction. Participants were 14 trained SPs who playe...

Telehealth and Kidney Care: Helping Patients Understand and Access Telemedicine
The educational tool and abstract to follow are intended for use by chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients, independent of renal replacement modality, transplant, or conservative management. The abstract presents an overview of the handout intended to provide a tool for telehealth education to enhance preparation for and understanding and adoption of this mode of health care. The handout may be used in any medical management environment that intends to offer telehealth or is affiliated with service lines that incorporate telemedicine.

Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: Improving Education Outside of Transplant Centers about Live Donor Transplantation-Recommendations from a Consensus Conference.
Discussion of the effect and potential for implementation around each recommendation is featured, particularly regarding reducing racial and socioeconomic disparities in access to LDKT. To accomplish these recommendations, the entire community of professionals and organizations serving kidney patients must work collaboratively toward ensuring accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date LDKT education for all patients, thereby reducing barriers to LDKT access and increasing LDKT rates. Role of telehealth in renal replacement therapy education.
Abstract The prevalence of end-stage renal disease is rising in the United States, which bears high financial and public health burden. The most common modality of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the United States is in-center hemodialysis. Many patients report lack of comprehensive and timely education about their treatment options, which may preclude them from participating in home-based dialysis therapies and kidney transplantation evaluation. While RRT education has traditionally been provided in-person, the rise of telehealth has afforded new opportunities to improve upon the status quo. For example, techn...
