Validating the Use of Google Trends to Enhance Pertussis Surveillance in California
We examined the possible role of a delay to pertussis diagnosis (from symptom onset) limiting the model performance, but an extended models using lagged observed pertussis time series did not show improvement of model fit. This may indicate that the model is detecting real-time Google activity performed around the time patients receive a pertussis diagnosis (rather than detecting Google activity about pertussis symptoms before seeking healthcare). Since the launch of Google Flu Trends in 2009, there have been numerous other applications of Google Trends to a broad number of communicable diseases as diverse as Ebola and m...

Estimating pertussis incidence in general practice using a large Australian primary care database
CONCLUSION: We provide comprehensive estimates of pertussis-related incidence in general practice (primary care), well in excess of notified pertussis incidence in Australia. This highlights the utility of MedicineInsight data in providing a greater understanding of the burden of medically-attended pertussis infections.PMID:34119346 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.05.079

The Fast Track from a New Practice Recommendation to Nurse Sensitive Indicator
Poster PresentationPurpose for the ProgramIn response to the recent surge in pertussis across the United States, specific recommendations for pregnant women have been made by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Infants younger than age 6 months, who are too young to be vaccinated against pertussis, are the most vulnerable population with the highest mortality from this disease. The recommendations from ACIP and ACOG focus on protecting the newborn directly by targeting vacc...

Jerry Brown Must Sign the California Vaccine Bill
California does not often make common cause with Mississippi and West Virginia. America’s blue-red divide doesn’t come any wider than it does between the liberal laboratory of the Pacific West and the conservative cornerstones of the old south. But with a single signature on a single bill, California Gov. Jerry Brown could ensure that the largest state in the nation joins the two far smaller ones in what ought to be a simple, primal mission: keeping children healthy. The pending bill, which passed the California legislature with bipartisan majorities and now rests on Brown’s desk, is known simply as SB277...

Why Jerry Brown Was Right to Sign the California Vaccine Bill
Updated: June 30, 2015, 2:32 PM EDT California does not often make common cause with Mississippi and West Virginia. But with a single signature on a single bill, California Gov. Jerry Brown ensured that the largest state in the nation joined the two far smaller ones in what ought to be a simple, primal mission: keeping children healthy. The law, which passed the California legislature with bipartisan majorities, does a straightforward job—remo...

Why Public Schools Should Require the HPV Vaccine
If you live in Rhode Island and your children go to public school, they will need to be vaccinated against the Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV. This is a new requirement—and not everyone likes it. Those who oppose the change point out that you catch HPV through sex, unlike infections like measles or whooping cough that you can catch if someone in the classroom has it and coughs on you. Why, they say, should the HPV vaccine be required for school? Because it could save lives, that’s why. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. It’s also the cause of many other cancers, and genital warts. The vaccine, which can be g...

More Teens Get Needed Vaccines In Blue States
(Reuters Health) - Parental politics may influence whether teens get recommended vaccinations, according to a U.S. study. Dividing states into red and blue based on how they voted in the 2012 presidential elections, researchers found that in that year, adolescents in blue states were significantly more likely to have received three important vaccines recommended for 11 to 12 year olds. “These associations are important because they demonstrate that there are broader forces associated with political affiliation that may influence acceptance of immunizations for adolescent children,” said senior author Linda M. N...

Dental provider practices and perceptions regarding adolescent vaccination
ConclusionsDental providers reported several barriers to recommending vaccines. While comfortable with discussing preventive medical care in general, providers are less comfortable making vaccine recommendations to their patients. Vaccine recommendations are not a traditional practice among dental providers and may require additional education and communication tools.

Whole-cell pertussis vaccine in early infancy for the prevention of allergy in children
CONCLUSIONS: There is very low-certainty evidence that a first dose of wP given early in infancy, compared to a first dose of aP, affects the risk of atopic diseases in children. The incidence of all-cause SAEs in wP and aP vaccinees was low, and no cases of encephalopathy were reported. The certainty of the evidence was judged as moderate for all-cause SAEs, and low for encephalopathy. Future studies should use sensitive and specific endpoints of clinical relevance, and should be conducted in settings with high prevalence of IgE-mediated food allergy. Safety endpoints should prioritise common vaccine reactions, parental a...
