Efficacy and economics of targeted panel versus whole-exome sequencing in 878 patients with suspected primary immunodeficiency
Next-generation sequencing has become a first-line tool for the diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency. However, patient access remains limited because of restricted insurance coverage and a lack of guidelines addressing the use of targeted panels versus whole-exome sequencing (WES).

Leading in Time of COVID: A True Test of Leadership
By Folake OlayinkaAug 15 2020 (IPS) In 1918, the Spanish Flu, a deadly influenza caused by the H1N1 virus, decimated the world. Over the course of four successive waves, it infected 500 million people, about a third of the world’s population at the time, resulting in 50 million deaths. More recently between 2014 and mid-2016 , the Ebola virus epidemic was the most widespread outbreak of Ebola virus disease in history—causing devastating  loss of life and socioeconomic disruption in the West Africa region, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. These outbreaks, as well as SARS and MERS, each have provided lessons...

The economics of drug allergy
Purpose of review As drug allergy research aims to inform clinical practice, implementation of best practices may be influenced by financial resources required to incorporate new interventions and the resulting clinical and economic returns on those resource investments. The present review summarizes new insights into the economics of drug allergy over the past year. Recent findings While considering economic implications of recent drug allergy research, many studies have addressed different contextual factors related to the setting, provider, or outcomes. Advances in technology have enabled specialized allergists to ...

The Coronavirus Outbreak Keeps Humans from Touching. Here ’s Why That’s So Stressful
With people around the world practicing social distancing and self-isolation to curb the further spread of coronavirus, some are starting to feel the effects of a lack of human touch. Whether it’s shaking a coworker’s hand or hugging a friend, most people are accustomed to some level of platonic physical touch on a daily basis. But for those who are quarantining alone or with people with whom they don’t have physical contact, loneliness and social isolation are growing health concerns. Now, in the wake of President Donald Trump’s March 30 announcement that he was extending national social distancing...

The Combined Usage of Cor a 9 And Cor a 14 In Hazelnut Allergy Diagnosis Could Bring About Substantial Cost Savings To US Payors And Caregivers: a Population-Based Simulation Study
Hazelnut allergy (HA) accurate diagnosis is crucial: undetected patients may incur in severe reactions, while over-diagnosis brings about avoidable costs to Payors and anxiety in patients. As Component-Resolved Diagnosis (CRD) using Cora9 and Cora14 could be useful in HA diagnosis, this theoretical study aims at benchmarking these components when used alone or together. Results are input to a health economics model to quantify the economic impact of HA when various CRD paradigms are simulated in the US.

A quality of life mapping function developed from a grass pollen sublingual immunotherapy trial to a tree pollen sublingual immunotherapy trial.
Conclusions: Application of the mapping function enabled the calculation of QALDs associated with the treatment, with the caveat that data were extrapolated from grass seasonal allergy to tree seasonal allergy. The results showed a significant QALD benefit of the treatment over placebo in treatment of tree pollen-induced rhinoconjunctivitis. PMID: 31352853 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Beyond Adherence Thresholds: A Simulation Study of the Optimal Classification of Longitudinal Adherence Trajectories From Medication Refill Histories
Conclusion: The choice of LCMA estimate and sliding window parameters has a major impact on the performance of a clustering algorithm to identify distinct longitudinal adherence trajectories. We recommend (a) to assume constant adherence between refills, (b) to avoid dichotomization based on a threshold, and (c) to explore optimal sliding windows parameters in simulation studies or selecting shorter non-overlapping windows for the identification of different adherence patterns from medication refill data. Introduction Medication adherence is frequently estimated based on electronic healthcare data (EHD), such as pr...

The future outlook on allergen immunotherapy in children: 2018 and beyond
AbstractAllergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only currently available immune-modifying and aetiological treatment for patients suffering from IgE-mediated diseases. In childhood, it represents a suitable therapeutic option to intervene during the early phases of respiratory allergic diseases such as rhino-conjunctivitis and asthma, which is when their progression may be more easily influenced. A growing body of evidence shows that oral immunotherapy represents a promising treatment option in children with persistent IgE- mediated food allergy. The efficacy of AIT is under investigation also in patients with extrinsic atopic...

Food allergy trends at the crossing among socio-economics, history and geography
Purpose of review The epidemiology of food allergy did inspire theories on the reasons for the recent surge of the disease. We offer here a reasoned review on the relationships between the trajectories of human development and the trend of the food allergy epidemics. Recent findings The exponential trend of the frequency of food allergy paralleled the explosive acceleration of the human development over the last few decades. Dietary factors have been indicated as responsible for these trends and targeted for potential preventive strategies. Other socio-economic factors have been related to this evolution: solar exposu...
