A New Peanut Allergy Drug Could Be a Promising Treatment for Children
A new drug could become the first-ever protective treatment for the more than one million children in the U.S. who suffer from peanut allergies. In a phase-three trial, the results of which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the peanut-derived drug AR101 helped some children with severe peanut allergies tolerate the equivalent of two peanut kernels without serious side effects. Prior to taking the drug, none of these children could safely ingest more than the equivalent of one-tenth of a kernel. AR101, which is manufactured by Aimmune Therapeutics (the company also designed and funded the study), delive...

Drought in the Semiarid Region of Brazil: Exposure, Vulnerabilities and Health Impacts from the Perspectives of Local Actors
Conclusion The results obtained from this research shows, in general, the fragility in the social and political infrastructure necessary to improve the living conditions of populations, particularly those that depend on family agriculture in drought prone areas. The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

Population histamine burden assessed using wastewater-based epidemiology: The association of 1,4 ‑methylimidazole acetic acid and fexofenadine.
Population histamine burden assessed using wastewater-based epidemiology: The association of 1,4‑methylimidazole acetic acid and fexofenadine. Environ Int. 2018 Aug 07;120:172-180 Authors: Choi PM, O'Brien JW, Li J, Jiang G, Thomas KV, Mueller JF Abstract Systematic sampling and analysis of wastewater has become an important tool for monitoring consumption of drugs and other substances, and has been proposed as a method to evaluate aspects of population health using endogenous biomarkers. 1,4‑methylimidazoleacetic acid (MIAA) is an endogenous biomarker and metabolite of histamine turnover. Its uri...

Tick-induced allergies: mammalian meat allergy and tick anaphylaxis.
Authors: van Nunen SA Abstract Mammalian meat allergy after tick bites and tick anaphylaxis are the most serious tick-induced allergies. They are often severe, should be largely avoidable and offer fascinating insights into the development and prevention of allergies. Australian clinicians reported the first cases of tick anaphylaxis and discovered the association between tick bites and the development of mammalian meat allergy. The subsequent finding of the allergen epitope within the meat responsible for the allergic reaction, α-gal (galactose-α-1,3-galactose), stimulated further interest in this emergent aller...

The Western environment reduces innate immune cytokine production in Chinese immigrants
In the past few decades, a dramatic increase in the prevalence of allergic disease in Western developed countries has led to a large disproportion in the prevalence of asthma and allergy between Western and Eastern countries.1,2 Australia and China have one of the highest and lowest rates of asthma and allergies, respectively, as demonstrated in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood.3,4 Immigrants who migrate from low-risk countries to high-risk countries experience a gradual increase in allergic diseases to the same level as the local population.

Does nurses' role, health or symptoms influence their personal use of ingestible complementary and alternative medicines?
CONCLUSIONS: Findings showed a credible pattern of front line workers with physically demanding workloads that impact their physical health and are linked to frequent symptoms, using CAM treatments and achieving some success in being able to continue working and avoid sickness absence. Further investigation is warranted to protect and maintain the health of the nursing and midwifery workforce. PMID: 29154065 [PubMed - in process]

Experts Concerned About Effectiveness Of This Year ’ s Flu Vaccine
(CNN) — Last year’s seasonal flu vaccine effectiveness was just 42%, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated. Even if vaccinated, people had inadequate protection against the flu. This limited effectiveness was due to a mutation that occurred in the influenza A (H3N2) vaccine strain, according to a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This vaccine mutation resulted from an egg-based manufacturing process commonly used today. This year’s flu vaccine may also be imperfect, said Scott Hensley, author of the new study and an associate profe...
