Cohort profile: the vitamin A and D and nitric oxide (AD-ON) observational cohort on lung development and symptoms in premature and mature children in North Zealand, Denmark
Purpose The risk of developing asthma-like symptoms and asthma in childhood is influenced by genetics, environmental exposures, prenatal and early postnatal events, and their interactions. The cohort name refers to vitamins A and D, and nitric oxide (NO) spelt backwards and this cohort profile paper aims to present the data collection and aim of the cohort. The overall aim when establishing this cohort was to investigate if childhood lung function can be traced back to early neonatal lung function and fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) and investigate prenatal and postnatal risk factors including maternal and neonatal vitamin A ...

Maternal antibiotic use during pregnancy and asthma in children: population-based cohort study and sibling design
Antibiotic use during pregnancy may affect asthma risk in offspring. However, epidemiological studies yielded conflicting findings, with an observed association possibly confounded by shared familial factors. We sought to assess the association between maternal antibiotic use during pregnancy and childhood asthma in the offspring, by accounting for time-stable familial factors. We conducted a population-based cohort study and sibling study using data from Danish nationwide registers, which comprised 407 804 liveborn singletons from 2005 to 2011. Antibiotic use during pregnancy was defined as at least one antibiotic prescri...

Goal-directed therapy with bolus albumin 5% is not superior to bolus ringer acetate in maintaining systemic and mesenteric oxygen delivery in major upper abdominal surgery: A randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSION Bolus human albumin 5% was not superior to bolus ringer acetate in maintaining systemic or mesenteric oxygen delivery in elective major upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery, despite the administration of larger volumes of trial fluid in the ringer acetate group. No significant difference was seen in fluid-related complications or LOS. TRIAL REGISTRATION https://eudract.ema.europa.eu/ Identifier: 2013-002217-36.

On endocrine disruption at the workplace – how to get from suggestive to conclusive evidence?
Unusual clusters and outbreaks of reproductive disorders during past decades remind us of the devastating health consequences and human suffering to which exposure to industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals may give rise. Birth defects caused by gestational exposure to thalidomide, vaginal cancer by diethylstilbestrol, azoospermia by dibromochloropropane, cerebral palsy by methyl mercury, and fetal wasting syndrome by chlorinated biphenyls are all inscribed in medical history as tragic mementos of ignorance and neglect in the past (1). In parallel with the fast-increasing entrance of women into the workforce, interest ...

Maternal antibiotic use during pregnancy and asthma in children: population-based cohort study and sibling design
Conclusion: Prenatal exposure to antibiotic use during pregnancy is not associated with asthma in children. The association observed by previous studies could be due to familial confounding.

Autoimmune Disease in Women: Endocrine Transition and Risk Across the Lifespan
Conclusion Autoimmune disease states show strong associations with endocrinological changes in human and animal studies. There is clear evidence for the role of sex steroids in the immune disturbances that result in autoimmune diseases (Figure 2). The majority of women who pass through the different endocrinological transition states do not succumb to autoimmune diseases. FIGURE 2 Figure 2. Factors that contribute to increased incidence and prevalence of autoimmunity in women. In women (46XX) with genetic susceptibility to autoimmune states, external environmental stimuli affect modifying factors as well as endo...

ALCAM Mediates DC Migration Through Afferent Lymphatics and Promotes Allospecific Immune Reactions
In conclusion, our findings identify ALCAM as a novel therapeutic target for preventing corneal allograft rejection in high-risk patient populations. Moreover, given the documented contribution of ALCAM to (lymph)angiogenesis, DC migration, and T cell activation, ALCAM blockade might represent a therapeutic strategy for treating other immune-mediated inflammatory conditions, such as solid organ transplant rejection, allergy or autoimmune diseases. Experimental Procedures Cloning, Expression, and Purification of I/F8-Fc and KSF-Fc For cloning of I/F8-Fc and KSF-Fc the respective scFv sequence was amplified from previousl...

Fertility treatment among women with asthma: a case-control study of 3689 women with live births
Asthma has been linked with prolonged time to pregnancy. Our aim was to explore a possible association between asthma and need for fertility treatment among women with live births. All women enrolled in the Management of Asthma during Pregnancy (MAP) programme at Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark were each matched with the next three consecutive women giving birth at Hvidovre Hospital. Information from the Danish National Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) registry was cross-linked with the Danish Medical Birth registry to identify live births. The primary outcome of interest was births following fertility treatment. Our samp...

Deep neuromuscular blockade and surgical conditions during laparoscopic ventral hernia repair: A randomised, blinded study
CONCLUSION Deep compared with no NMB did not change the rating score of the surgical view immediately after introduction of trocars during laparoscopic ventral hernia repair, but the surgical condition were improved during suturing of the hernia. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02247466.

Maternal hypothyroidism in the perinatal period and childhood asthma in the offspring
ConclusionOur findings suggest that maternal hypothyroidism, especially when it is untreated, increases childhood asthma risk. Early detection and appropriate treatment of hypothyroidism in pregnant women may be an area for possible prevention of childhood asthma. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
