Forty-four-year longitudinal study of stroke incidence and risk factors - the Prospective Population Study of Women in Gothenburg
CONCLUSIONS: Several classic risk factors showed independent associations with stroke. Vulnerability factors as low education and oral health, reflected by loss of teeth, also showed association with stroke. All these factors are possible to target in primary care preventive interventions.Key PointsStroke is a common disease and the risk of stroke is a key issue demanding preventive strategies in primary health care. The present prospective population study of women showsOut of 1460 women, almost a quarter got a stroke. The stroke incidence 60-82 years of age was rather stable between the first four age cohorts but somewha...

Documentation of atrial fibrillation prior to first‐ever ischemic stroke
ConclusionComprehensive approach for AF screening allows detecting AF in one‐third of patients admitted with first‐ever ischemic stroke. Patients with high cardiovascular risk are more likely to have non‐permanent AF.

Incidence and risk conditions of ischemic stroke in older adults
ConclusionIncidence and mortality from ischemic stroke remains considerable. Apart from age and history of atherosclerosis (prior stroke or coronary artery disease), atrial fibrillation, diabetes, and smoking were the underlying conditions most strongly associated with an increased risk.

Application of Machine Learning Techniques to Identify Data Reliability and Factors Affecting Outcome After Stroke Using Electronic Administrative Records
Conclusion: Electronic administrative records from this cohort produced reliable outcome prediction and identified clinically appropriate factors negatively impacting most outcome variables following hospital admission with stroke. This presents a means of future identification of modifiable factors associated with patient discharge destination. This may potentially aid in patient selection for certain interventions and aid in better patient and clinician education regarding expected discharge outcomes.

High prevalence of atrial fibrillation in stroke patients admitted to university of gondar hospital, northwest ethiopia.
Conclusion: Atrial fibrillation is common in stroke patients in our hospital, especially in the elderly population. It is associated with low rate of improvement at discharge. Appropriate screening and treatment of atrial fibrillation is invaluable for the primary and secondary prevention of stroke. PMID: 29115119 [PubMed]

Advances in stroke medicine.
Authors: Campbell BC Abstract In recent years, reperfusion therapies such as intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy for ischaemic stroke have dramatically reduced disability and revolutionised stroke management. Thrombolysis with alteplase is effective when administered to patients with potentially disabling stroke, who are not at high risk of bleeding, within 4.5 hours of the time the patient was last known to be well. Emerging evidence suggests that other thrombolytics such as tenecteplase may be even more effective. Treatment may be possible beyond 4.5 hours in patients selected using brain imagi...

Poor enhancement pattern of left atrial appendage in cardiac computed tomography is associated with stroke in persistent atrial fibrillation patients.
Conclusions: The LAA enhancement pattern observed using cardiac CT is associated with the risk of stroke. Poor enhancement in the LAA suggests a potential high risk of stroke. PMID: 31559034 [PubMed]

Early apixaban therapy after ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsSymptomatic HT rates are likely to be low in randomized trials of DOAC initiation post-stroke. Recurrent ischemic stroke may be the major clinical outcome. These data may be used as expected event rates when calculating sample size requirements for future safety/efficacy trials of early versus late DOAC initiation after AF-related stroke.

Increased Serum EphrinA1 Is Associated With Parenchymal Hematoma (PH) After Ischemic Stroke
Conclusion Higher serum EphrinA1 is independently associated with higher risk of PH after ischemic stroke. Future studies with larger sa mple size are needed to validate our findings and elucidate the potential role of EphrinA1 in PH.

Identifying Barriers in Acute Stroke Therapy in Argentina. ARENAS Registry (P2.014)
CONCLUSIONS: Only 47% of patients were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit, rt-PA was underused and initial evaluation was not performed by a neurologist in most of cases. The gap between clinical practice guidelines and real world is wide in Argentina and interventions to improve acute stroke care are mandatory.Disclosure: Dr. Atallah has nothing to disclose. Introduction of direct oral anticoagulant within 7  days of stroke onset: a nomogram to predict the probability of 3-month modified Rankin Scale score  & gt;  2
AbstractIn clinical practice, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are often started earlier ( ≤ 7 days) than in randomized clinical trials after stroke. We aimed to develop a nomogram model incorporating time of DOAC introduction ≤ 7 days of stroke onset in combination with different degrees of stroke radiological/neurological severity at the time of treatment to predict the prob ability of unfavorable outcome. We conducted a multicenter prospective study including 344 patients who started DOAC 1–7 days after atrial fibrillation-related stroke onset. Computed tomography scan 24–36 h after stroke onset was ...
