The prevalence and risk factors study of cognitive impairment: Analysis of the elderly population of Han nationality in Hunan province, China
CONCLUSION: A representative prevalence of cognitive impairment, MCI, and dementia was found in the elderly Han Chinese population in Southern China. And we further explored the role of known risk factors, particularly in physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption.PMID:37736696 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14478

Meta-analysis of primary care delivered buprenorphine treatment retention outcomes
Conclusions: While we only investigate BT through primary care, our findings indicate retention rates are equivalent to the rates reported in the specialty care literature. More work is needed to examine factors that may impact primary care delivered BT specifically and differentiate participants that may benefit from care delivered in specialty over primary care as well as the converse.PMID:37737714 | DOI:10.1080/00952990.2023.2251653

Network Analysis of Health-related Behaviors, Insomnia, and Depression Among Urban Left-behind Adolescents in China
This study aims to examine the symptom level associations among multiple health-related behaviors, insomnia, and depression in urban LBA. Data on a sample of urban LBA aged 11-19 (N = 3,601) from the Adolescent Mental Health Survey in Shenzhen, China, were used. Health-related behaviors (i.e., Internet use, physical inactivity, social jetlag, smoking, and alcohol consumption), insomnia, and depressive symptoms were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Graphical Gaussian Model (GGM) was used to describe key bridging nodes in an undirected network. Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) was used to construct a directed ne...

Predictors of compliance with higher dose omega-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy and implications for the risk of prematurity: exploratory analysis of the ORIP randomised trial
Conclusions Results in compliers were similar to those from intention-to-treat analyses, suggesting that non-compliance was not a major factor in explaining outcomes from the ORIP trial. Trial registration number ACTRN12613001142729.

Parking behaviour under the influence of alcohol
In this study, 29 test persons (13 m, 16 f) completed three test drives with real cars, each made up of three different parking situations. While four test persons remained sober, the majority drank a previously calculated amount of alcohol before the second drive; the aim was to reach a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 1.1 g/kg. The third drive took place about 2 h later without any further ingestion of alcohol. The impact of BAC on the number of accidents, time needed to finish the drive, the amount of correction moves and quality of the final parking position (in the centre of the parking space) were analysed. Furth...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6751: Investigation of the Mechanism of Action of Periploca forrestii Schltr. Extract on Adjuvant Collagen Rats Based on UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS Non-Targeted Lipidomics
in Zhou Periploca forrestii Schltr. (P. forrestii) is a classical medicinal plant and is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue injuries, and traumatic injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-arthritic effects of three fractions of P. forrestii alcoholic extracts (PAE), P. forrestii water extracts (PWE), and total flavonoids from P. forrestii (PTF) on Freund’s complete adjuvant (FCA)-induced arthritis in rats, and to use a non-targeted lipidomic method to investigate the mechanism of action of the three fractions of P. forrestii in the...

"The fake positive results of COVID-19 rapid antigen tests with the use of beverages vary between brands of test kits".
In this study, the authors showed how several soft and alcoholic drinks could be used to create false positive results with COVID-19 rapid antigen test (RAT) when using the Abott Panbio COVID-19 Ag Lateral Flow Test Cassette. RAT were massively introduced in 2021 as a point-of-care diagnosis tool. With a good specificity and sensitivity for several brands in the market [2], the speed and convenience of RAT made them available for self-testing worldwide.

Sex and Gender Differences in Co-Occurring Alcohol Use Disorder and PTSD
AbstractPurpose of ReviewResearch demonstrates a strong association between alcohol use disorder (AUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, less is known about sex- and gender-based differences among individuals with AUD  + PTSD. This narrative review examines recent literature in this area and aims to be a reference for future research endeavors.Recent FindingsExtant literature shows that intertwining biological systems increase females ’ risk of developing PTSD and experiencing more adverse effects from AUD compared to males. Sex-based physiological differences further interact with gendered sociocult...

Lifestyle habits and gastric cancer in an East Asian population: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that tea intake may reduce the risk of GC, for which smoking is a potential risk factor. Nevertheless, a larger and more diverse sample size is needed for further validation.PMID:37731647 | PMC:PMC10507616 | DOI:10.3389/fonc.2023.1224753

Role of tissue markers associated with tumor microenvironment in the progression and immune suppression of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Med Oncol. 2023 Sep 20;40(10):303. doi: 10.1007/s12032-023-02169-5.ABSTRACTHead and neck cancers (HNC) continues to dominate major cancers contributing to mortality worldwide. Squamous cell carcinoma is the major type of HNC. Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma grouped under HNC is a malignant tumor occurring in the oral cavity. The primary risk factors of OSCC are tobacco, alcohol consumption, etc. This review focuses on modulations, mechanisms, growth and differentiation of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Cancer cell surrounds itself with a group of elements forming a favorable environment known as tumor microenvironment (TME). I...

Weight-independent effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery on remission of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice
CONCLUSIONS: RYGB improved whole-body composition and hepatic lipid homeostasis to a greater extent than CR in mice. RYGB was associated with discrete remodeling of the hepatic transcriptome, suggesting that surgery may be mechanistically additive to CR.PMID:37731222 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23876
