CV Risk Spikes on Moderate Drinking, Persists on Heavier IntakeCV Risk Spikes on Moderate Drinking, Persists on Heavier Intake
Binge drinkers beware, no French paradox for you: MI and stroke risks spiked within hours of moderate alcohol intake but then plunged; it stayed high a week after heavy drinking in a meta-analysis. Heartwire from Medscape

Predictive performance of HAS-BLED risk score for long-term survival in patients with non-ST elevated myocardial infarction without atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: HAS-BLED scoring system is similar to the GRACE and CRUSADE systems but better than TIMI system to predict long-term survival outcomes in patients with NSTEMI without atrial fibrillation. However, HAS-BLED score is easier to calculate than GRACE and CRUSADE scores. PMID: 26951606 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Alcohol and Immediate Risk of Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: -There appears to be a consistent finding of an immediately higher cardiovascular risk following any alcohol consumption but by 24 hours, only heavy alcohol intake conferred continued risk. PMID: 26936862 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum nitrate and nitrite are associated with the prevalence of various chronic diseases except cancer.
CONCLUSION: Thus, fasting concentrations of NOx in serum can be an important diagnostic parameter characteristic for specific chronic diseases. PMID: 26899180 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The role of arterial hypertension in the primary prevention of stroke
Publication date: Available online 14 December 2015 Source:Cor et Vasa Author(s): Jiří Widimský Hypertension belongs to the most important modifiable risk factors of cerebrovascular diseases and stroke. Home or 24-hours ambulatory blood pressure measurement (ABPM) is a preferable measurement of blood pressure. Nonpharmacologic treatment should include smoking abstinence, overweight reduction, restriction of alcohol intake and moderate consumption of salt. Evidence based clinical studies have convincingly proved that drug therapy decreases the incidence of cerebrovascular diseases and stroke by 40–60%. Systolic bloo...

Serum γ-glutamyltransferase and Mortality due to Cardiovascular Disease in Japanese Men and Women.
CONCLUSION: γ-GTP may be a risk factor for total CVD mortality independent of alcohol drinking status in Japanese men and women. PMID: 26875518 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fruit and vegetable consumption and mortality in Eastern Europe: Longitudinal results from the Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial Factors in Eastern Europe study
Conclusions Our results suggest that increasing F&V intake may reduce CVD mortality in CEE and FSU, particularly among smokers and hypertensive individuals.

Stroke in Latin America
Publication date: December 2015 Source:Global Heart, Volume 10, Issue 4 Author(s): Álvaro Avezum, Francisco F. Costa-Filho, Alexandre Pieri, Sheila O. Martins, José A. Marin-Neto The epidemiological transition in Latin America toward older urban dwelling adults has led to the rise in cardiovascular risk factors and an increase in morbidity and mortality rates related to both stroke and myocardial infarction. As a result, there is an immediate need for effective actions resulting in better detection and control of cardiovascular risk factors that will ultimately reduce cardiovascular disease burden. Data from case-...

Left Atrial Appendage Remodeling After Lariat Left Atrial Appendage Ligation Original Articles
Conclusions— Incomplete LAA ligation after Lariat is common. However, the remodeled LAA cavity is dramatically reduced. Diminished cavity size and tightening of the LAA orifice may play a role in the reduction of thrombus formation.

Incremental Value of the CRUSADE, ACUITY, and HAS-BLED Risk Scores for the Prediction of Hemorrhagic Events After Coronary Stent Implantation in Patients Undergoing Long or Short Duration of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Coronary Heart Disease
Conclusions Our analysis suggests that the CRUSADE score predicts major bleeding similarly to ACUITY and better than HAS BLED in an all-comer population with percutaneous coronary intervention and potentially identifies patients at higher risk of hemorrhagic complications when treated with a long-term dual antiplatelet therapy regimen. The ORBIT bleeding score: a simple bedside score to assess bleeding risk in atrial fibrillation
Conclusions The five-element ORBIT bleeding risk score had better ability to predict major bleeding in AF patients when compared with HAS-BLED and ATRIA risk scores. The ORBIT risk score can provide a simple, easily remembered tool to support clinical decision making.

Effects of Oral Anticoagulant Therapy in Medical Inpatients ≥65 Years With Atrial Fibrillation
In this retrospective cohort observational study, we investigated mortality, ischemic, and hemorrhagic events in patients ≥65 years with atrial fibrillation consecutively discharged from an Acute Geriatric Ward in the period 2010 to 2013. Stroke and bleeding risk were evaluated using CHA2DS2-VASC (congestive heart failure/left ventricular dysfunction, hypertension, aged ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke/transient ischemic attack/systemic embolism, vascular disease, aged 65 to 74 years, gender category) and HAS-BLED (hypertension, abnormal renal/liver function, stroke, bleeding history or predisposition, labile in...

Impact of Modifiable Risk Factors on B-type Natriuretic Peptide and Cardiac Troponin T Concentrations
Alcohol use, physical activity, diet, and cigarette smoking are modifiable cardiovascular risk factors that have a substantial impact on the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death. We hypothesized that these behaviors may alter concentrations of cardiac troponin, a marker of myocyte injury, and B-type natriuretic peptide, a marker of myocyte stress. Both markers have shown strong association with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. In 519 women with no evidence of cardiovascular disease, we measured circulating concentrations of cardiac troponin T, using a high-sensitivity assay (hsTnT), and the amino...

Can common carotid intima media thickness serve as an indicator of both cardiovascular phenotype and risk among black Africans?
Conclusion Our findings support CIMT as a significant indicator of both cardiovascular risk and phenotype among adult black Africans. However, specific thresholds need to be defined based on prospective studies.
