Attitude of community pharmacists toward patients with a substance-related disorder (heroin, alcohol, and tobacco), estimation of harmfulness and knowledge of these substances, and continuing education: a pilot cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Pharmacists had a negative attitude toward heroin and alcohol-related disorders. A positive attitude toward patients with a substance-related disorder was associated with a need for continuing education. Efforts should be made to change attitudes and to promote continuing education on heroin and alcohol-related disorders.PMID:35667462 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2022.05.005

Fetal Alcohol Research Caring for Patients with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure: A Needs Assessment.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that few respondents were satisfied with their current FASD knowledge or practice behaviours. Continuing FASD education, particularly through online courses, was strongly desired. To maximize FASD recognition and optimize care for patients with FASDs, pediatric care providers must ensure that their FASD knowledge base, practice skills and provision of medical home care remain current. Conclusion: This novel technology discriminates and quantifies subtle differences in behavior and neurological impairments in subjects afflicted with neurological injury/disease. KINARM assessments can be incorporated into multi-center trials (e.g., monitoring stroke motor recovery: NCT02928393). Further studies will determine if KINARM Labs can demonstrate a clinical effect with fewer subjects over a shorter trial period. Disclosures/funding: Dr. Stephen Scott is the inventor of KINARM and CSO of BKIN Technologies.   Multiplexed mass spectrometry assay identifies neurodegeneration biomarkers in CSF Presenter: Chelsky...

Faculty Buy-In to Teach Alcohol and Drug Use Screening.
Abstract Educating nursing faculty about the use of an evidence-based practice to screen and intervene earlier along the continuum of alcohol and other drug use, misuse, and dependence is essential in today's health care arena. Misuse of alcohol and other drugs is a significant problem for both individual health and societal economic welfare. The purpose of this article is to describe nursing faculty buy-in for the implementation of an evidence-based addiction training program at a university-based school of nursing. Derived from an academic-community partnership, the training program results suggest implications ...

Hard to reach and easy to ignore: the drinking careers of young people not in education, employment or training
Abstract Young people's drinking in the UK remains a matter of medical, social, media and political concern. The notion of transition and drinking styles in the move from childhood to adulthood and from education to employment has been central to understanding young people's drinking behaviour, but little is known about how the drinking patterns of those not in education or employment, both men and women, develop over time. This paper reports on research which aimed to examine the current drinking habits and drinking careers of young people not in education employment and training who are traditionally described as hard to...

Why Not Pot? A Review of the Brain-based Risks of Cannabis
Conclusion Evaluating the potential harms of a commonly used drug—especially a complex substance like marijuana—is a challenging but vital task. Fully informed awareness of both the potential and proven benefits and the potential and proven harms of marijuana are necessary in order to have rational discussions with patients, teens, and decision makers regarding marijuana use. Based on a review of the current literature, we suggest the mnemonic DDUMB (dependence, driving, underachievement, mental illness, and “bad to worse”) as a tool that captures several of the more well-supported, brain-based risks associated wit...

Importance of short-term continuing care plan adherence on long-term outcomes among patients discharged from residential substance use treatment.
CONCLUSION: Treatment providers are encouraged to emphasize the relative importance of attending initial post-discharge appointments in achieving successful long-term outcomes. Allocation of resources to enhance engagement during residential treatment may be justified in that there may be value in actively encouraging patients to participate in continuing care activities, particularly shortly following discharge. Big breakfast 'boosts fertility' for some women
Conclusion This study has shown that in slim women with PCOS, eating most of the daily calories at breakfast can reduce levels of insulin by 8% and testosterone by 50% with no weight change. In this study, this led to half of the women in the breakfast group ovulating at least once, compared to a fifth of the "dinner group", which suggests improved fertility. Although these results are encouraging, there are some limitations to the study, including: Ovulation was only recorded over a three-month timespan, and it is not clear how often any of the women were ovulating in the previous year. This study was reli...
