Skull base osteomyelitis missed in mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma.
Conclusions A high suspicion of skull base involvement should be warranted, even if radiological findings are not atypical, in cases of chronic otitis media (COM) with cholesteatoma. Objective To investigate some clues indicating the development of skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) in patients who received mastoidectomy, through reviewing pre-operative temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT). Method Retrospective review of patients with SBO after mastoidectomy for COM. A total of five patients with SBO after mastoidectomy with available pre-operative TBCTs were enrolled in this study. Results All patients were diagnosed as C...

Acute unilateral sensorineural hearing loss associated with anabolic steroids and polycythaemia: case report.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first case report of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss secondary to the use of anabolic steroids causing polycythaemia. This cause should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with sensorineural hearing loss, especially in young males, when no other risk factors can be identified. Simultaneous carotid endarterectomy and free flap surgery for head and neck microvascular reconstruction
Introduction/aims: Microvascular free flaps are the gold standard for reconstruction of head and neck defects. However, suitable recipient vessels are essential. Stenosis of the carotid tree is most commonly due to atherosclerosis, which shares risk factors with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Free flaps are often not carried out in these patients due to the risk of failure and complications. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) offers an evidence based intervention for stroke risk reduction but its use for improving vascularity to free flaps has not been previously reported.

Internal carotid artery injury in endoscopic endonasal surgery: A systematic review
ConclusionsThe incidence of reported cases of ICA injury during EES remains low. Left‐sided injuries to the cavernous segment of the ICA occurred more frequently than injuries on the right. Level of EvidenceNA Laryngoscope, 2015

Delayed Carotid Dissection following Lower Lip Revascularization in the setting of Hyoid Fracture – A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Traumatic injuries to the lip are common, but injuries that require revascularization of the lower lip are infrequent and pose a significant challenge to the reconstructive surgeon. In this manuscript, we present the case of a 53 year-old female who sustained a lower lip avulsion injury, comminuted mandibular parasymphyseal, and hyoid bone fracture secondary to a bicycle accident. Trauma workup included a CTA of the head and neck, which did not demonstrate vascular injury. Despite successful revascularization of the lower lip, on post-operative day 11 the patient developed a large internal carotid artery dissection and mid...

Delayed Carotid Dissection Following Lower Lip Revascularization in the Setting of Hyoid Fracture—A Case Report and Review of the Literature
This report describes the case of a 53-year-old woman who sustained a lower lip avulsion injury, a comminuted mandibular parasymphyseal fracture, and a hyoid bone fracture secondary to a bicycle accident. Trauma workup included computed tomographic angiography of the head and neck, which did not show vascular injury. Despite successful revascularization of the lower lip, on postoperative day 11 the patient developed a large internal carotid artery dissection and middle cerebral artery stroke.

Carotid Atheroma: Detection Through Dental Panoramic Radiograph And Cone-Beam Computed Tomography
Calcium salt deposition in atherosclerotic plaques induces their calcification, resulting in vascular obstruction, which can cause stroke. This pathological process can affect the carotid arteries. Here, we report the surprising finding of a carotid artery atheroma in a 60-year-old asymptomatic female. The condition was identified on a panoramic radiograph taken at the beginning of dental treatment, which showed aspects suggesting carotid artery atheroma. Cone-beam computed tomography confirmed those aspects, which are very similar to those of calcified triticeous cartilage.

Cervical paragangliomas: single centre experience with 44 cases.
Authors: Ferrante AM, Boscarino G, Crea MA, Minelli F, Snider F Abstract Paragangliomas (PGL) are rare lesions of the neuroendocrine system; in the neck, they usually affect the carotid glomus (carotid body tumours-CBT). This retrospective analysis reports our experience in management of these lesions in patients treated by surgical resection. Between 2000 and 2014, 33 patients were surgically treated at our institution, obtaining a series of 44 cervical PGLs. Tumour characteristics, family history, diagnostic procedures, surgical treatment, short- and long-term outcomes were reviewed. A female prevalence was found...

Effect of oral IQoro(R) and palatal plate training in post-stroke, four-quadrant facial dysfunction and dysphagia: A comparison study.
CONCLUSION: Training with either a palatal plate (PP) or an oral IQoro(R) screen (IQS) in patients with longstanding facial dysfunction and dysphagia after stroke can significantly improve facial activity (FA) in all four facial quadrants as well as swallowing capacity (SC). Improvements remained at late follow-up. The training modalities did not significantly differ in ameliorating facial dysfunction and dysphagia in these patients. However, IQS training has practical and economic advantages over PP training. OBJECTIVES: This study compared PP and oral IQS training in terms of (i) effect on four-quadrant facial dysfu...

Hearing Loss Caused by a P2RX2 Mutation Identified in a MELAS Family With a Coexisting Mitochondrial 3243AG Mutation.
CONCLUSION: This is the first case report of a diagnosis of hearing loss caused by P2RX2 mutation in patients with MELAS. A potential explanation is that a decrease in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production due to MELAS with a mitochondrial 3243A>G mutation might suppress activation of P2X2 receptors. We also suggest that hearing loss caused by the P2RX2 mutation might be influenced by the decrease in ATP production due to MELAS. PMID: 25788561 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
