Selected adipose tissue hormones in the blood of patients with ischemic cerebral stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher resistin and chemerin blood concentrations significantly increase the risk of ischemic stroke. The level of stroke severity in the moment of its occurrence and its course do not depend on the concentrations of adipocytokines under analysis. PMID: 31851370 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Accuracy and Implications of Hemorrhagic Stroke Recognition by Emergency Medical Services.
CONCLUSIONS: Among EMS-transported hemorrhagic stroke cases, stroke screen documentation was strongly associated with EMS stroke recognition, which was in turn associated with higher quality of EMS care and faster CT scans upon emergency department arrival. A comparison of benign positional vertigo and stroke patients presenting to the emergency department with vertigo or dizziness
ConclusionsImaging utilization in BPPV patients presenting with VDS is high. The profile of patients with BPPV that received imaging was substantially more benign than that of stroke patients (a quarter had no neurologic symptoms, exam findings, or stroke RFs). The HINTS exam was underutilized, and computed tomography was heavily utilized despite well-established limitations in diagnosing posterior circulation strokes. This study highlights the need for increased training in the HINTS exam, narrowing of the scope for computed tomography, and a higher threshold for imaging patients with isolated VDS.

Elevated stress hyperglycemia and the presence of intracranial artery stenosis increase the risk of recurrent stroke
ConclusionsSHR represents a better biomarker to predict the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with ICAS than FPG and HbA1c regardless of previous diabetes mellitus.Trial registrationhttps://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=125817; Identifier, [ChiCTR2100046958].

Association between hemoglobin A1c and acute ischemic stroke among patients with type-2 diabetes: a case-control study
ConclusionsOngoing surveillance of HbA1c among PTDs should be conducted alongside knowledge sharing of glycemic control and stroke prevention as an essential measure to prevent developing AIS risk.

Left ventricle cardiac myxoma as a cause of ischaemic stroke in young patient treated by mechanical thrombectomy.
We present a case of a young 21-year-old woman with no symptoms of dyspnoea who suddenly developed expressive aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis due to a thrombus in the left middle cerebral artery followed by the left anterior cerebral artery. She underwent acute mechanical thrombectomy with improvement of the neurological status. Bedside ultrasonography detected a suspected myxoma, which was further confirmed by a CT scan as a myxoma in the left cardiac ventricle. The patient underwent successful surgery. We stress on the importance of echocardiographic examination in young patients after ischaemic stroke and multidisci...

Severe paraneoplastic hypoglycemia secondary to a gastrointestinal stromal tumour masquerading as a stroke.
We report the case of a 70-year-old previously healthy female who presented acutely to the Accident and Emergency department with left-sided vasomotor symptoms including reduced muscle tone, weakness upon walking and slurred speech. Physical examination confirmed hemiparesis with VIIth nerve palsy and profound hepatomegaly. A random glucose was low at 1.7 mmol/l, which upon correction resolved her symptoms. In hindsight, the patient recalled having had similar episodes periodically over the past 3 months to which she did not give much attention. While hospitalized, she continued having episodes of symptomatic hypoglycaem...

Clinical significance of skin autofluorescence for diabetic macroangiopathy and comparison with conventional markers of atherosclerosis: a cross-sectional and prospective study
ConclusionAmong diabetic macroangiopathies, SAF is a good stroke biomarker, but not for CAD and PAD.

Sex Differences in Sex Hormone Profiles and Prediction of Consciousness Recovery After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Conclusion: These findings indicate that TBI differentially affects the levels of sex-steroid hormones in men and women patients. Plasma levels of testosterone could be a good candidate blood marker to predict recovery from unconsciousness after sTBI for male patients. Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide and is increasing in incidence (1). Patients with acute severe TBI (sTBI) often develop severe disorders of consciousness, i.e., coma, minimally conscious state or vegetative state. Although many patients may regain consciousness during the 1-month post-TBI p...

Contemporary management of pediatric lateral sinus thrombosis: A twenty year review
Conclusion: Lateral sinus thrombosis is a rare but treatable complication of otologic disease in the pediatric population, warranting a high index of suspicion. Management should include broad spectrum antibiotics and surgical removal of all perisinus infection. Anticoagulation is not definitively associated with improved outcomes and warrants further investigation.

Update on cardiovascular outcomes at 30 years of the diabetes control and complications trial/epidemiology of diabetes interventions and complications study.
CONCLUSIONS DCCT INT and the attendant 6.5 years of lower HbA1c had long-term salutary effects on the development and progression of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease during the subsequent follow-up during EDIC. PMID: 24356596 [PubMed - in process]

Hyperglycemia Is Associated with Impaired Muscle Quality in Older Men with Diabetes: The Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging.
CONCLUSION: Poor glycemic control in these older patients with diabetes was associated with significant risk of decreased muscle quality and performance status. Glycemic control with an HbA1c of <8.5% might be needed to reduce the risk of adverse skeletal and functional outcomes in this population. PMID: 27126884 [PubMed]

Prognostic Value of Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography in Patients With Diabetes: A Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS CTA in patients with diabetes allows for safely ruling out future events, and the detection of CAD could allow for the identification of high-risk patients in whom aggressive risk factor modification, medical surveillance, or elective revascularization could potentially improve survival.

Aldosterone producing adenoma with a somatic KCNJ5 mutation revealing APC dependent Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.
CONCLUSIONS: This case report underlines the need of establishing the frequency of germline APC variants in patients with primary aldosteronism and bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia, as their presence may predispose to APA development and severe hypertension well before the first FAP symptoms appear. From a mechanistic point of view, it supports a two-hit model for APA development, whereby the first hit drives increased cell proliferation while the second hit specifies the pattern of hormonal secretion.
