“When I woke up after my stroke, all I wanted was to be normal again,” recalls Kelsey Tainsh. Normal — as in a healthy teen athlete who could brush her teeth and shower on her own, who wasn’t wheelchair-bound, who wasn’t compelled to hide her paralyzed right hand in her pocket everywhere she went, one who hadn’t lost all of her high school friends except for her two triplet sisters.

Associations of preoperative stroke and tranexamic acid administration with convulsive seizures in valvular open-heart surgery
AbstractIn cardiac surgery, use of the antifibrinolytic agent tranexamic acid (TXA) and acute perioperative stroke are both associated with convulsive seizures. We hypothesized that an older (preoperative) stroke increases the risk of TXA-associated seizures as well. To test this hypothesis, we retrospectively analyzed data from 16,110 patients who had undergone open-heart valvular surgery at our institution between 2009 and 2020. The dosing of TXA was moderate. Carotid Artery Disease as a Predictor of In-Hospital Postoperative Stroke After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting From 1999 to 2011
In this study, the risk factors for stroke after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) were examined. In particular, the role of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (both unilateral and bilateral) as a predictor of in-hospital postoperative stroke was investigated. Finally, the trends surrounding in-hospital postoperative stroke from 1999 to 2011 also were examined. The purpose of the study was to appropriately identify patients at high risk for stroke after CABG and spark discussion about the perioperative management of such patients.
