Incidence and predictors of ischemic stroke during hospitalization for congestive heart failure
Abstract Heart failure (HF) increases the risk of ischemic stroke. Data regarding the incidence and predictors of ischemic stroke during hospitalization for HF are limited. The study population of this retrospective cohort study consisted of patients with congestive HF, consecutively admitted to our center from October 2010 to April 2014. We excluded patients complicated with acute myocardial infarction, infective endocarditis, and takotsubo cardiomyopathy. We also excluded those with dialysis or mechanical circulatory support. We investigated the incidence of ischemic stroke during hospitalization for HF. Thereaf...

Adherence to Guidelines for Antithrombotic Therapy in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation According to CHADS2 Score before and after Stroke: A Multicenter Observational Study from Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that antithrombotic use in AIS patients with AF might be not optimal before and after stroke in Korea. PMID: 26541495 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke or left atrial thrombus prediction using antithrombin III and mean platelet volume in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsHigh MPV and AT‐III deficiency were predictive markers for stroke or LA thrombus. Their predictive power for stroke was independent of antiplatelet treatment, anticoagulation therapy, and a high CHA2DS2‐VASc score in patients with AF.

Validation of the R2CHADS2 and CHADS2 Scores for Predicting Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment.
Conclusion These results suggest that the R2CHADS2 and CHADS2 scores are useful for predicting post-stroke cognitive impairment. PMID: 28924104 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk profile, clinical presentation, and determinants of stroke subtypes among patients with stroke admitted to public referral hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia in 2021: A cross-sectional study
ConclusionAge, the level of sedentary physical activity, absence of a family history of chronic illness, hypertension, and past stroke were independent determinants of stroke subtype.

Admission Rates, Time Trends, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke From German Nationwide Data
DISCUSSION: Despite recent advances in acute stroke care over the last decade, the percentage of stroke hospitalizations resulting in death remained unchanged. Further research is needed to determine how best to optimize stroke care pathways for multimorbid patients.PMID:36332988 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000201259

Predictive Risk Factors of In-Hospital Mortality Following Acute Stroke in the United States: Data from the Nationwide Inpatient Database, 2006-2010 (P02.015)
CONCLUSIONS: The rate of in-hospital mortality is relatively high following acute stroke (8.42%). We identified multiple risk factors of in-hospital mortality in acute stroke patients. The strongest risk factor is the type stroke (hemorrhagic). The present finding suggests that patients at increased risk of mortality can be identified and additional treatment for prevention might be warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Naderi has nothing to disclose. Stroke After Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Timing, Characteristics, and Clinical Outcomes Coronary Artery Disease
Conclusions— Stroke is an infrequent complication in the setting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary PCI but is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Studies to determine mechanisms that may be responsible for strokes that occur >48 hours from primary PCI are warranted. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00091637.

Tako-tsubo syndrome as a consequence and cause of stroke.
Authors: Bersano A, Melchiorre P, Moschwitis G, Tavarini F, Cereda C, Micieli G, Parati E, Bassetti C Abstract Since tako-tsubo syndrome (TS) frequently appears soon after stroke (usually stroke involving the insular cortex), it is believed to be a consequence rather than a cause of stroke. Herein, we describe a 70-year-old woman presenting with a left middle cerebral artery stroke (involving the insular cortex) who developed a further contralateral ischemic stroke with concomitant detection of a transient intracardiac mural thrombus attributable to TS. It can reasonably be maintained that that in our patient insul...

Multiple Silent Lacunes Are Associated with Recurrent Ischemic Stroke
Background: Silent lacunes are a common finding on brain imaging in ischemic stroke patients, but the prognostic significance of these lesions is uncertain. We aimed at investigating the association of silent lacunes and the risk of ischemic stroke recurrence, death, and cardiovascular events in a cohort of patients with incident ischemic stroke and no atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: We included 786 patients (mean age 59.5 (SD 14.0); 42.9% females) in a registry-based, observational cohort study on patients with first-ever ischemic stroke. On brain MRI we assessed the number of silent lacunes as none, single, or multipl...

Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014
