Abstract 217: How well does the CHADS2 Stroke Risk Score Predict Major Hemorrhage in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation? Poster Session II
Conclusions: Although some clinical markers of stroke risk such as those included in the CHADS2 risk score are also associated with increased hemorrhage risk, the CHADS2 risk score should not be used instead of a validated hemorrhage risk tool to estimate hemorrhage risk.

Apixaban versus warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation according to prior warfarin use: Results from the Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation trial
Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation who are vitamin K antagonist (VKA)-naive may have a higher risk of thrombosis and/or bleeding than VKA-experienced patients. Methods and results: Using data from ARISTOTLE, we assessed baseline characteristics and the treatment effect of apixaban versus warfarin in the VKA-naive and VKA-experienced cohorts. We compared rates of study drug discontinuation and time-in-therapeutic range. Overall, 7,800 (43%) were VKA naive, and 10,401 were VKA experienced. At baseline, both groups were similar with respect to age and congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes, stroke sco...

Warfarin Use and the Risk for Stroke and Bleeding in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Undergoing Dialysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that warfarin use is not beneficial in reducing stroke risk but is associated with a higher bleeding risk in patients with AF undergoing dialysis. PMID: 24452752 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ischemic stroke: the impact of renal dysfunction on 1-year mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with ischemic stroke, renal dysfunction (decreased GFR) was associated with 1-year mortality. GFR was independent predictor of mortality. PMID: 25787210 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antithrombotic Treatment Following Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Patients With and Without Atrial Fibrillation Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In majority of patients who receive antithrombotic agents, treatment is initiated within 6 months of ICH. Still, many patients with compelling indications for antithrombotic treatment are not prescribed antithrombotic agents. Factors other than high risk of embolic stroke by CHA2DS2-VASc in ICH survivors with concurrent AF are used to guide the anticoagulant treatment decision in Swedish clinical practice.

Which Comorbidities and Complications Predict Ischemic Stroke Recovery and Length of Stay?
Conclusions: Greater age and higher National Institute of Health Stroke Scale at admission were associated with both higher disability and longer LOS. Congestive heart failure, CRF, presence of arrhythmias, and development of acute renal failure were associated with greater LOS. The development of urinary tract infection caused higher disability.

Risks of atrial fibrillation and death at discharge after thrombolysis in stroke patients: Northumbrian Sentinel Stroke Audit, 2013–2015
ConclusionFor future research, clinical outcomes in addition to atrial fibrillation and quality of life both at discharge and 6 months after thrombolysis treatment should be included for examination as well. For clinical practice, giving thrombolysis treatment in hospitals might need to be reconsidered if clinical outcomes were actually worse than not.

Serum D-dimer Levels Are Proportionally Associated with Left Atrial Enlargement in Patients with an Acute Ischemic Stroke due to Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusion The serum D-dimer levels were significantly associated with LAE in anticoagulation-naïve patients with an acute ischemic stroke and NVAF. PMID: 27250050 [PubMed - in process]

Aspirin Instead of Oral Anticoagulant Prescription in Atrial Fibrillation Patients at Risk for Stroke
ConclusionsIn a large, real-world cardiac outpatient population of AF patients with a moderate to high risk of stroke, more than 1 in 3 were treated with aspirin alone without OAC. Specific patient characteristics predicted prescription of aspirin therapy over OAC.

Stroke prevention, 1-year clinical outcomes and healthcare resource utilization in patients with atrial fibrillation in France: Data from the GARFIELD-AF registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients enrolled in France had higher rates of mortality and stroke/systemic embolism than in GARFIELD-AF overall. Conversely, the risk of major bleeding was not higher. PMID: 29861295 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of comorbidities on ischemic stroke mortality: An analysis of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database
CONCLUSION: Patients hospitalized from ischemic stroke suffered from the coexistence of other comorbidities. Of the comorbidities studied, IHD was identified as having the most significant impact on in-hospital mortality.PMID:34221599 | PMC:PMC8247684 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_415_2021
