Severe obesity among American Indian tribal youth in the Southwest
Children with obesity are at risk for adult obesity, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and low self-esteem, and are less likely to participate in physical activity than non-obese youth.1 The obesity epidemic is due largely to lifestyle behaviours and the built environment that shape life habits in obvious and subtle ways.2 With early onset of obesity, risks for chronic disease and associated complications have more time to develop. Various studies show that American Indian youth have the highest prevalence of obesity of all racial/ethnic groups in the US.

Conclusions Better planning and preparation by humanitarian actors seeking to decrease the overall morbidity and mortality associated with disasters should include treatment of NCDs. There is limited evidence regarding the optimal management of hypertension in disaster settings. Clinical care of patients with hypertension and other NCDs is an important part of disaster relief and recovery. Diabetes Mellitus in Peru
Conclusions Diabetes is a major health care issue in Peru that exposes difficult challenges and shortcomings. The national strategy for tackling diabetes includes promotion of healthy lifestyles; training primary care physicians and providing them with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, safe and effective medications, and tools for monitoring treatment; and, finally, construction of a comprehensive health care network for early referral in order to prevent, detect, and treat diabetic complications.

Interlinkage among cardio-metabolic disease markers in an urban poor setting in Nairobi, Kenya.
