Factor VIII Levels are Associated with Ischemic Stroke, Stroke Subtypes and Neurological Worsening.
Abstract The role played by hemostasis in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke is still controversial. In the present study, we looked for a possible association of ischemic stroke with the high clotting activity of factor VIII (FVIII). The study population consisted of 116 patients with acute ischemic stroke who had been admitted between September 2013 and September 2014 to the Department of Neurology, Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and 76 control subjects with no history of stroke. FVIII levels were higher in stroke patients as compared to controls (127.5 ± 52.5 vs. 108.4 ± 49.0 IU/dL; P = 0.012). In a un...

The effect of a locally adapted, secondary stroke risk factor self-management program on medication adherence among veterans with stroke/TIA
Abstract We targeted stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) survivors to engage in self-management practices to manage secondary stroke risk factors. We conducted a randomized, regional pilot trial of a locally adapted, secondary stroke prevention program. We implemented the program at two Veterans Administration Medical Centers. Program sessions targeted stroke risk factor self-management. Specifically, we evaluated the effect of the program on the reach, implementation, and effectiveness on patient self-efficacy; stroke-specific, health-related quality of life; and medication adherence for the prevalent stroke r...

Elevated inflammatory markers predict mortality in long-term ischemic stroke-survivors: a population-based prospective study.
CONCLUSIONS: Fibrinogen and IL-6 were independent predictors of mortality in long-term stroke-survivors, whereas elevated hs-CRP predicted mortality in stroke-free subjects. Mortality risk prediction in stroke-survivors differed from that of stroke-free subjects. PMID: 27146666 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk Factors, Clinical Features and Prognosis for Subtypes of Ischemic Stroke in a Chinese Population
SummaryIt is unanimously accepted that stroke is a highly heterogeneous disorder. Different subtypes of ischemic stroke may have different risk factors, clinical features, and prognoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors, clinical characteristics, and prognoses of different subtypes of ischemic stroke defined by the Trial of ORG10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) criteria. We prospectively analyzed the data from 530 consecutive patients who were admitted to our hospital with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days of stroke onset during the study period. Standardized data assessment was used and the ca...

Prevalence and risk factors of stroke in the elderly in Northern China: data from the National Stroke Screening Survey
AbstractBackgroundThe overall global burden of stroke is considerable and increasing. In China, stroke is the leading cause of death and disability.MethodsFor this study, we used data from the National Stroke Screening Survey in 2012 and the 2010 Chinese population from sixth National Census of Populations to calculate a standardized (by age, gender, and education) stroke prevalence. Prevalence, risk factors, and management of stroke were compared by gender, age, and site.FindingsThe standardized prevalence rate of survival stroke patients in study population aged 60 and older was 4.94% in total. Hypertension was the most ...

Temporal Trends and Predictors of Drug Utilization and Outcomes in First-Ever Stroke Patients: A Population-Based Study Using the Singapore Stroke Registry
ConclusionsPrescription of secondary stroke preventive medications (particularly in ischemic stroke) was associated with more favorable outcomes, highlighting the importance of physician adherence to evidence-based pharmacotherapy.

The contribution of plasma uric acid to the risk of stroke in hypertensive populations.
CONCLUSIONS: High UA level could significantly increase stroke risk in female hypertensive patients. Female hypertensive patients may benefit from managing UA at normal levels for stroke prevention. PMID: 32790821 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Statin Effects in Atrial Fibrillation-Related Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Statin therapy for AF-related stroke may reduce all-cause mortality and improve functional outcomes. Randomized controlled studies are warranted to confirm the effects of statins on the outcomes of AF-related stroke.

Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke and Associated Factors Among Elderly Patients With Large-Artery Atherosclerosis: A Hospital-Based Follow-Up Study in China
Large-artery atherosclerotic (LAA) stroke is the most common subtype of ischemic stroke. However, risk factors for long-term outcomes of LAA stroke in the elderly Chinese population have not been well-described. Therefore, we aimed to assess outcomes and risk factors at 3, 12, and 36 months after LAA stroke onset among stroke patients aged 60 years and older. All consecutive LAA patients aged ≥ 60 years were prospectively recruited from Dongying People's Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018. The clinical features and outcome data at 3, 12, and 36 months after stroke were collected. Differences in outcomes and ...

Cholesterol buildup in brain presents new target to reduce dementia risk from stroke
University of Arizona Health Sciences researchers suggest the risk of developing dementia after a stroke might be reduced by a drug that could help immune cells process the cholesterol-rich debris generated by a stroke. Prevalence and Associated Factors of Stroke among Older Adults in India: Analysis of the Longitudinal Aging Study in India-Wave 1, 2017 & #8211;2018
Conclusion: The prevalence of stroke was high among adults aged ≥45 years in India. Hypertension, family history of stroke, arrhythmias, and low physical activity were significant contributors to stroke. The findings suggest that preventing and controlling these lifestyle conditions and behaviors may help prevent stroke.

Polymorphism of IL-1B rs16944 (T/C) associated with serum levels of IL-1 β affects seizure susceptibility in ischemic stroke patients
CONCLUSIONS: The IL-1B rs16944 polymorphism had an independent association with seizure susceptibility after ischemic stroke. The mechanism might be associated with the regulation of IL-1β levels.PMID:36089763 | DOI:10.17219/acem/152738
