How Good Is Online Information for Patients on the Treatment for Luminal Gastrointestinal Cancers? A Comprehensive Evaluation in English and Spanish
AbstractThe internet has become a necessary communication platform for health information. The quality of online material for patients varies significantly, and this is not different for material on gastrointestinal cancers. We aimed to assess English and Spanish online patient information addressing esophageal, gastric, and colorectal cancer treatment. Six independent Google searches were conducted using the terms: esophageal cancer treatment, gastric cancer treatment, colorectal cancer treatment, and their translations in Spanish. Websites were included in the top 50 results for each search. Readability was assessed usin...

Portal of medical data models: information infrastructure for medical research and healthcare
The objective of the Portal of Medical Data Models (MDM, https://medical-data-models.org) is to foster sharing of medical data models. Methods: MDM is a registered European information infrastructure. It provides a multilingual platform for exchange and discussion of data models in medicine, both for medical research and healthcare. The system is developed in collaboration with the University Library of Münster to ensure sustainability. A web front-end enables users to search, view, download and discuss data models. Eleven different export formats are available (ODM, PDF, CDA, CSV, MACRO-XML, REDCap, SQL, SPSS, ADL...

Cancers in Taiwan: Practical insight from epidemiology, treatments, biomarkers, and cost
Publication date: Available online 12 September 2019Source: Journal of the Formosan Medical AssociationAuthor(s): Chun-Nan Kuo, Yu-Ming Liao, Li-Na Kuo, Hui-Ju Tsai, Wei-Chiao Chang, Yun YenCancer is the leading cause of death in Taiwan, and the overall incidence rate has gradually increased. The four most common cancers in Taiwan are colorectal, lung, breast and liver cancers. With the rise in incidence, the clinical use and costs of all anticancer drugs have steadily increased. The costs of novel therapeutics, such as targeted therapies and immunotherapy were accounted almost two-third of all antineoplastic agents in Tai...

Cancers, Vol. 11, Pages 1639: Antiplatelet Agents for Cancer Prevention: Current Evidences and Continuing Controversies
et Cancer Over the past two decades, aspirin has emerged as a promising chemoprotective agent to prevent colorectal cancer (CRC). In 2016, the mounting evidence supporting its chemoprotective effect, from both basic science and clinical research, led the US Preventive Services Task Force to recommend regular use of low-dose aspirin in some subgroups of patients for whom the benefits are deemed to outweigh the risks. In contrast, data on the chemoprotective effect of aspirin against other cancers are less clear and remain controversial. Most data come from secondary analyses of cardiovascular prevention trials, with on...

Lessons from a systematic literature search on diagnostic DNA methylation biomarkers for colorectal cancer: how to increase research value and decrease research waste
DiscussionThis systematic literature search revealed that major requirements to develop clinically relevant diagnostic CRC DNA methylation markers are often lacking. To avoid the resulting research waste, clinical needs, intended biomarker use and independent validation should be better considered prior to study design. In addition, improved reporting quality would facilitate meta-analysis, thereby increasing level of evidence and enabling clinical translation.PMID:35584320 | DOI:10.14309/ctg.0000000000000499

Determinants of adherence to screening by colonoscopy in individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer
Conclusion: Adherence to colonoscopy is determined by multiple variables. Medical staff can play a key role in increasing adherence to colonoscopy.Practice implications: Future interventions should focus on fostering positive attitudes, overcoming barriers, enhancing social support and providing a medical recommendation. Special efforts should be invested in young FDRs, those of low socio-economic status and those who underutilize preventive medicine.

Socioeconomic Inequalities in Colorectal Cancer Screening in Korea, 2005-2015: After the Introduction of the National Cancer Screening Program.
CONCLUSION: Education inequalities in CRC screening among men and women aged 50 to 74 years were observed in Korea. No apparent pattern, however, was found for income inequalities. Further studies are needed to thoroughly outline socio-economic inequalities in CRC screening. PMID: 30328317 [PubMed - in process]

Education and Training in Transanal Endoscopic Surgery and Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision
Clin Colon Rectal Surg 2021; 34: 163-171 DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1718682There is a paradigm shift in surgical training, and new tool and technology are being used to facilitate mastery of the content and technical skills. The transanal procedures for rectal cancer—transanal endoscopic surgery (TES) and transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME)—have a distinct learning curve for competence in the procedures, and require special training for familiarity with the “bottom-up” anatomy, procedural risks, and managing complex cases. These procedures have been models for structured education and training, using multimodal to...

Continuing difficulties in interpreting CNV data: lessons from a genome-wide CNV association study of Australian HNPCC/lynch syndrome patients
Background: Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC)/Lynch syndrome (LS) is a cancer syndrome characterised by early-onset epithelial cancers, especially colorectal cancer (CRC) and endometrial cancer. The aim of the current study was to use SNP-array technology to identify genomic aberrations which could contribute to the increased risk of cancer in HNPCC/LS patients. Methods: Individuals diagnosed with HNPCC/LS (100) and healthy controls (384) were genotyped using the Illumina Human610-Quad SNP-arrays. Copy number variation (CNV) calling and association analyses were performed using Nexus software, with signifi...

Disclosing discourses: biomedical and hospitality discourses in patient education materials
Patient education materials have the potential to strengthen the health literacy of patients. Previous studies indicate that readability and suitability may be improved. The aim of this study was to explore and analyze discourses inherent in patient education materials since analysis of discourses could illuminate values and norms inherent in them. Clinics in Sweden that provided colorectal cancer surgery allowed access to written information and ‘welcome letters’ sent to patients. The material was analysed by means of discourse analysis, embedded in Derrida's approach of deconstruction. The analysis revealed a biomedi...
