Hepatitis C: A South African literature review and results from a burden of disease study among a cohort of drug-using men who have sex with men in Cape Town, South Africa.
CONCLUSION: We demonstrated a high burden of HCV exposure or infection among a small urban cohort of MSM who inject drugs. We recommend active screening of MSM (especially those who report drug use) for HCV, and the development of referral networks for access to treatment. PMID: 29262967 [PubMed - in process]

Comparison of prognostic systems in cirrhotic patients with hepatic encephalopathy
Conclusion: We found the best prognostic model for patients who were hospitalized in the ICU for hepatic encephalopathy to be CLIFSOFA, followed by APACHE II, CTP, and MELD scores. PMID: 29914250 [PubMed]

Clinico-Psychosocial Factors Predicting Hepatocellular Carcinoma Related Knowledge Among Patients with Chronic Liver Disease
This study is aimed at assessing the level of HCC-related knowledge among patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) who are at risk of HCC and determine predictors for poor knowledge. A cross-sectional study was condu cted among inpatients with CLD at the Third People’s Hospital of Kunming in China. Questionnaires were used to measure patient’s sociodemographic characteristics, HCC-related knowledge, and patient-doctor-related psychometric factors. Factor analysis was performed to explore the underlying domai ns captured by the knowledge questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify ind...

A randomized clinical trial of comprehensive education and care program compared to basic care for reducing anxiety and depression and improving quality of life and survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent surgery
This study aimed to investigate the effect of comprehensive education and care (CEC) program on anxiety, depression, quality of life, and survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent surgical resection. Totally 136 patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy were randomly assigned to CEC group and control group as 1:1 ratio. CEC group received health education, psychological nursing, caring activity, and telephone condolence, whereas control group received basic health education and rehabilitation for 12 months. Anxiety and depression were assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS);...

Quantitative phosphoproteomics reveals molecular pathway network alterations in human early-stage primary hepatic carcinomas: potential for 3P medical approach
CONCLUSIONS: Identification and annotation of phosphoproteomes and phosphorylation-mediated signaling pathways in human early-stage primary hepatic carcinoma tissues provided new directions for tumor prevention and treatment, which (i) helps to enrich phosphorylation functional research and develop new biomarkers; (ii) enriches phosphorylation-mediated signaling pathways to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of early-stage primary hepatic carcinoma; and (iii) develops anti-tumor drugs that facilitate targeted phosphorylated sites. We recommend quantitative phosphoproteomics in early-stage primary hepa...

Systemic treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: the search of new agents to join sorafenib in the effective therapeutic armamentarium.
Authors: Ribeiro de Souza A, Reig M, Bruix J Abstract INTRODUCTION: Hepatocelullar carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Despite the implementation of screening programs for high-risk individuals, a significant proportion of patients present with advanced disease at the moment of diagnosis. AREAS COVERED: In this review we will focus in the current treatment of advanced HCC, the research that has been done in the past few years, the achievements and failures in this setting and future perspectives. EXPERT OPINION: Sorafenib was the first drug that has shown to increas...

Search for useful biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma, tumor factors and background liver factors  (Review).
Search for useful biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma, tumor factors and background liver factors (Review). Oncol Rep. 2017 Mar 31;: Authors: Shimizu D, Inokawa Y, Sonohara F, Inaoka K, Nomoto S Abstract Hepatocarcinogenesis is a complex and multistep process that involves the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in regulatory genes. To understand the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), current research has utilized improved array technologies. The identification of cancer-related molecules could lead to the development of novel molecular targets for treatment and biomarker...

Privileged portal metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma in light of the coevolution of a visceral portal system and liver in the chordate lineage: a search for therapeutic targets.
Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) disseminates systemically, but metastases occur in distant organs in only a few patients, whereas HCC routinely metastasizes to liver and its vessels. HCC cells disseminate via hepatic veins, but portal veins are affected by metastasis more frequently than are hepatic veins, and correlates with poor prognosis. In this review, I suggest that privileged HCC portal metastasis occurs because of high levels of pancreatic family hormones and growth factors (PHGFs) in the portal blood. The analysis suggests that the appearance of the portal system carrying PHGFs in the evolution of...

The search for biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma and the impact on patient outcome.
Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th most common cancer, but the 3rd leading cause of cancer death globally with approximately 700,000 fatalities annually. The severity of this cancer arises from its difficulty to detect and treat. The major etiologies of HCC are liver fibrosis or cirrhosis from chronic viral infections, as well as metabolic conditions. Since most cases arise from prior pathologies, biomarker surveillance in high-risk individuals is an essential approach for early detection and improved patient outcome. While many molecular biomarkers have been associated with HCC, there are few that...

Cancers, Vol. 11, Pages 1497: Comprehensive Metabolomic Search for Biomarkers to Differentiate Early Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma from Cirrhosis
This study aimed to develop a metabolite panel to differentiate early-stage HCC from cirrhosis. Cross-sectional metabolomic analyses of serum samples were performed for 53 and 47 patients with early HCC and cirrhosis, respectively, and 50 matched healthy controls. Results were validated in 82 and 80 patients with early HCC and cirrhosis, respectively. To retain a broad spectrum of metabolites, technically distinct analyses (global metabolomic profiling using gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry and targeted analyses using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry) were employed. Multivariate analys...

Identification by TCGA database search of five genes that are aberrantly expressed and involved in hepatocellular carcinoma potentially via DNA methylation changes
ConclusionsWe identified five candidate genes whose expressions were regulated by DNA methylation of promoter CpGi and associate with cancer cases and poor prognosis in HCC. Modification of site-specific DNA methylation of these genes enables a different approach for HCC treatment with higher selectivity and lower adverse effects.
