Diagnostic value of conventional endoscopic ultrasound for lymph node metastasis in upper gastrointestinal neoplasia: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Conventional EUS has certain clinical value and can assist in the detection of LNM in upper gastrointestinal neoplasia, but it cannot be used as a confirmatory or exclusionary test.PMID:37662859 | PMC:PMC10472901 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i30.4685

Robotic versus laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses
Updates Surg. 2021 May 25. doi: 10.1007/s13304-021-01059-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn umbrella review was performed to summarize literature data and to investigate benefits and harm of robotic gastrectomy (RG) compared to laparoscopic (LG) approach. To overcome the intrinsic limitations of laparoscopy, the robotic approach is claimed to facilitate lymph-node dissection and complex reconstruction after gastrectomy, to assure oncologic safety also in advanced gastric cancer. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane and Embase databases for all meta-analyses published up to December 2019. The search strate...

Roux-en-Y versus Billroth-I reconstruction after distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence suggests that there is little to no difference between Roux-en-Y and Billroth-I reconstruction for the outcome health-related quality of life. The evidence for the effect of Roux-en-Y versus Billroth-I reconstruction on the incidence of anastomotic leakage is very uncertain as the incidence of this outcome was low. Although the certainty of evidence was low, we found some possibly clinically meaningful differences between Roux-en-Y and Billroth-I reconstruction for short-term outcomes. Roux-en-Y reconstruction probably reduces the incidence of bile reflux into the remnant stomach compared to Billr...

Effectiveness of Fucoidan on Supplemental Therapy in Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this systematic review indicate that the effects of fucoidan were inconsistent with clinical outcomes in metastatic or recurrent cancer patients. Only four studies were included, and heterogeneity in methodologies and relatively small sample sizes limited the research consensus. Although cause and effect between fucoidan and the survival time, disease control or adverse effects could not be confirmed, this study includes the most research on fucoidan in humans.PMID:35628061 | DOI:10.3390/healthcare10050923

SENTIERI - Epidemiological Study of Residents in National Priority Contaminated Sites. Sixth Report
CONCLUSIONS AND PERSPECTIVES: Despite the fact that this is an ecological study, and the excesses of pathologies with multifactorial aetiology can never be mechanically attributed solely to the environmental pressure factors that exist or existed in the areas studied, the ability to identify the excesses found in the contaminated sites investigated by the SENTIERI Project confirms the validity of this method of assessing the site-specific health profile, based on the use of epidemiological evidence to identify pathologies of interest a priori. In interpreting the data and lending robustness to what has been observed, compa...

Variations in the origin of the infrapyloric artery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Surgeons must be aware of the most common origin points of the IPA. Recommendations for future study include the stratification of IPA origin according to demographic characteristics, and further investigation into IPA morphological parameters such as tortuosity, course and relation to adjacent lymph nodes, aiding the creation of a standardized classification system pertaining to the anatomy of this vessel.PMID:37207852 | DOI:10.1016/j.aanat.2023.152109

Inappropriate use of proton pump inhibitor among elderly patients in British Columbia: what are the long-term adverse events?
CONCLUSION: This study revealed a high prevalence of PPI use among elderly populations in BC, Canada. The overutilization of PPIs is often a result of failure to re-evaluate the need for continuation of therapy. Published studies identified signals of serious harm from long-term PPI exposure. Healthcare providers with patients can reverse the relentless expansion of long-term PPI exposure by discussing the expected benefits and potential harms.PMID:37496243 | DOI:10.2174/1574886318666230726124540

Response to letter ‘An updated meta-analysis about the association of Asp299Gly in Toll-like receptor 4 gene with risk of cancer’
We read with interest the letter on ‘an updated meta-analysis about the association of Asp299Gly in Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene with risk of cancer’. Our meta-analysis assessed six selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs1927914, rs4986790, rs4986791, rs11536889, rs1927911 and rs2149356) in TLR4 on risk of cancer. We searched the PubMed and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) databases for all articles within a range of published years from 2000 to 2012 on the association between polymorphism in TLR4 and cancer risk (last search was update 29th February 2012). The following terms were used in...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 19th 2017
This study is the first to show that downregulation of PAPP-A expression in adult mice can significantly extend life span. Importantly, this beneficial longevity phenotype is distinct from the dwarfism of long-lived PAPP-A KO, Ames dwarf, Snell dwarf and growth hormone receptor (GHR) KO mice with germ-line mutations. Thus, downregulation of PAPP-A expression joins other treatment regimens, such as resveratrol, rapamycin and dietary restriction, which can extend life span when started in mice as adults. In a recent study, inducible knockdown of the GHR in young adult female mice increased maximal, but not median, lif...

Common and Co-Occurring Symptoms Experienced by Patients With Gastric Cancer.
Abstract PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Patients with gastric cancer experience multiple disease- and treatment-related symptoms. The purpose of this review was to describe the common and co-occurring symptoms experienced by patients with gastric cancer. LITERATURE SEARCH: Search terms, such as gastric cancer, symptoms, and experience, were used to search PubMed®, CINAHL®, and PsycINFO® for empirical papers published from January 1990 to July 2019. DATA EVALUATION: The search yielded 1,259 articles; 25 studies (21 observational and 4 interventional) were included in this review. Each study was systematically...
