Cleft Lip Repair and Primary and Intermediate Cleft Rhinoplasties
Facial Plast Surg Clin North Am. 2024 Feb;32(1):27-41. doi: 10.1016/j.fsc.2023.08.001. Epub 2023 Sep 27.ABSTRACTThe cleft lip is one of the most common craniofacial abnormalities seen worldwide. The lip and primary rhinoplasty repairs are performed together in a single surgery for patients aged 3 to 6 months. The intermediate rhinoplasty has fallen out of favor due to more advanced approaches at primary rhinoplasty. However, it still plays a role in addressing severe nasal airway obstruction or correcting anatomic differences causing emotional distress from social ridicule. The article reviews the incidence of cleft lip, d...

Treatment Modalities to Achieve Nasal Symmetry in Unilateral Cleft Lip/Nasal Deformity: An Objective and Comparative Evaluation
ConclusionIn our study, group V, i.e., modified Millard ’s repair with semi-open rhinoplasty improved the results in terms of all the objective parameters assessed. The results of the other groups showed improvement though not consistent in all parameters. Naso-alveolar molding is an effective adjunct. Additionally, nasal conformers proved to be of gre at value in retaining the results obtained post-surgery. (Source: Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery)

Modern Machiavelli? The illusion of ChatGPT-generated patient reviews in plastic and aesthetic surgery based on 9000 review classifications
CONCLUSION: ChatGPT convincingly replicates authentic patient reviews, even deceiving commercial AI detection software. Analyzing emotional tone and review length can help differentiate real from fake reviews, underscoring the need to educate both patients and physicians to prevent misinformation and mistrust.PMID:37972444 | DOI:10.1016/j.bjps.2023.10.119 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Updates in Cleft Care
Semin Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1776733Cleft lip and/or palate is a congenital malformation with a wide range of presentations, and its effective treatment necessitates sustained, comprehensive care across an affected child's life. Early diagnosis, ideally through prenatal imaging or immediately postbirth, is paramount. Access to longitudinal care and long-term follow-up with a multidisciplinary approach, led by the recommendations of the American Cleft Palate Association, is the best way to ensure optimal outcomes. Multiple specialties including plastic surgery, otolaryngology, speech therapy, orthodontists, psycholo...

The use of Human Acellular Dermal Matrix in Rhinoplasty: a Systematic Review of the Literature and Meta-Analysis
Alloplastic implants such as Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) have been used for various aesthetic and reconstructive purposes since the 1990s. Rhinoplasty addresses both aesthetic and functional nasal impairments, with often adoption of grafting materials. Currently, autologous grafts such as septal cartilage are the gold standard. However, they pose the risk of donor site morbidity, technical challenges, and additional operative time. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Alloplastic implants such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM) have been used for various aesthetic and reconstructive purposes since the 1990s. Rhinoplasty addresses both aesthetic and functional nasal impairments, often involving the adoption of grafting materials. Currently, autologous grafts, such as those using septal cartilage, are the gold standard. However, they pose the risk of donor site morbidity, technical challenges, and additional operative time. We review total complications, resorption/re-operation and success rates associated with the use of ADM in rhinoplasty. (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

A Safe Technique for Excising the Perpendicular Plate of the Ethmoid Bone in Patients with Crooked Nose: A Finite Element Analysis
ConclusionThe use of smaller resection angle with the Frankfurt plane, conservative resection depth, and torsion force can better reduce the stress value at the skull base and reduce the risk of basicranial fracture. It is a safe and effective technique for perpendicular plate resection of the ethmoid bone in the correction of crooked nose.Level of Evidence IVThis journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.
