A Bidirectional Relationship Between Cellular Senescence and Immune System Aging
The pace of age-related loss of function and consequent mortality accelerates over time, picking up particularly rapidly in later life. This is characteristic of systems in which multiple processes feed into each other. A causes B, but B also makes A worse. In the biology of aging there are many more than two processes at work, but the authors of today's open access paper picked two areas of aging in order to examine their bidirectional relationship. Firstly the accumulation of senescent cells, and secondly immunosenescence, the age-related decline of immune system function. Cells become senescent constantly in the ...

Immigration Can Offset U.S. Population Decline
Alex NowrastehThe U.S. population is growing slowly and the average age of Americans is increasing as a result. Although theUnited States is not as old as other countries and likely to age better, the future looks demographically grim. Somesocial scientists andcommentators think that boosting immigration can help delay or reverse those trends.Steven Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, makes a series of sillyarguments against the notion that immigration can slow the aging of the U.S. population. Camarota ’s points below are in quotes and my responses follow. In reality, a si...

A whale of a virus story
The ancestors of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) moved from land to the sea over 50 million years ago. Many viruses infect cetaceans, but how they evolved during the shift from land to sea is unknown. Fossilized retroviral genomes integrated into cetacean DNA provide insight into this question. The retroviral reproduction cycle involves the conversion […] (Source: virology blog)

In conclusion, in our prospective community-based study, aging-related biomarkers were associated with measures of subclinical atherosclerosis cross-sectionally and with all-cause mortality prospectively, supporting the concept that these biomarkers may reflect the aging process in community-dwelling adults. Only Limited Further Gains in Human Longevity are Likely from Improvement in Environmental Factors
Today's open access paper offers one of a number of different perspectives on the present consensus regarding the causes of individual variance in life expectancy, of differences in species life span, and of changes in human life expectancy over time. Human life expectancy has increased greatly in the modern era, but this is largely due to improved control over infectious disease and other environmental factors that can cause early mortality and long-term health risks. Similarly, individual variance in life span near entirely arises from lifestyle choice and environmental factors. There is a component arising from slowed a...

Childfree Adults Are Just As Satisfied With Their Lives As Parents
By Emily Reynolds Across the world, birth rates are dropping. The global fertility rate has halved since 1950, with indications that this will continue to fall. There are a number of suggestions as to why this is the case: women may stay in education or the workforce rather than have multiple children, for instance, and many people across the world now have much greater access to contraception. But many adults are also explicitly deciding not to have children, instead choosing to be “childfree”. The childfree movement has grown rapidly over the last few years: the ‘r/Childfree’ subreddit has over 1.4...

Don ’t Confuse Mandates With Changing Behavior
Ryan BourneOne of the key themes ofEconomics In One Virusis that it can be very difficult to disentangle the effects of voluntary behavioral change from public policy. Another way of putting this is that “defining the counterfactual” is hard. In a world in which public policies can crowd out private action, or else merely codify it, you should not judge the wisdom of an action by the outcomes associated with that action being mandated. An interesting example of this in the pandemic relates to mask mandates and mask wearing. Studies on the effectiveness of government mask mandates have so far produced mixed results ...

Victimizing patients as a Black feminist
Well before I started medical school, I thought I wanted to be a gynecologist. I remember being absolutely obsessed with reproduction and reproductive health. I remembered learning about periods when I was 9 years old, and I knew I wanted to figure out how to be the doctor that did that work. This study is consistent with previous evidence showing that inflammaging, or age-related inflammation, is naturally heightened in the nervous system. Moreover, the authors disproved their hypothesis that anti-inflammatory microglia-specific genes are responsible for the elevated inflammatory response in aged brains since the expression of anti-inflammatory mediators was elevated in middle-aged brains following infection. Thus, the cause for the increase in pro-inflammatory genes remains to be elucidated. Mixed Results in Animal Studies of Gene Therapy Targeting Axonal Regrowth https://www.fightaging.org/archi...

Ebstein ’ s anomaly and pregnancy
Ebstein’s anomaly and pregnancy Ebstein’s anomaly of tricuspid valve was first described by Wilhelm Ebstein in 1866 [1]. It is characterized by distal displacement of the septal and posterior leaflets of tricuspid valve. Anterior leaflet is elongated and sail like. A portion of the right ventricle is ‘atrialized’ due to the distal displacement of the tricuspid valve. Right atrium is often grossly dilated. Right to left shunting occurs across a patent foramen ovale producing cyanosis of variable extent. Ebstein’s anomaly is one of the cyanotic congenital heart diseases in which survival to adul...

The Freshwater Fish Species of Bigmouth Buffalo Exhibits Negligible Senescence
In this study we examined the potential relationship between age and multiple physiological systems including: stress levels, immune function, and telomere length in individuals ranging in age from 2 to 99 years old in bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus), the oldest known freshwater teleost fish. Contrary to expectation, we did not find any evidence for age-related declines in these physiological systems. Instead, older fish appeared to be less stressed and had greater immunity than younger fish, suggesting age-related improvements rather than declines in these systems. There was no significant effect of age on ...
