Women of color face biases in endometriosis diagnosis and surgical treatment
March is endometriosis awareness month. Endometriosis, a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, affects 1 in 10 women, or 190 million individuals worldwide. Although endometriosis leads to chronic pain and fertility issues and can impact bowel, urinary, and sexual function, it may take up to Read more… Women of color face biases in endometriosis diagnosis and surgical treatment originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Interesting Insight into the Relationship Between TP53, Telomerase, and Telomere Length
This study provides some insight into how these relationships play out in practice by sabotaging telomerase and p53, and observing the results. Telomerase activity is restricted in humans and telomere attrition occurs in several tissues accompanying natural aging. Critically short telomeres trigger DNA damage responses and activate p53 which leads to apoptosis or replicative senescence. These processes reduce cell proliferation and disrupt tissue homeostasis, thus contributing to systemic aging. Similarly, zebrafish have restricted telomerase expression, and telomeres shorten to critical length during their lifesp...

Wait Till Health Care Tries Dynamic Pricing
By KIM BELLARD Nice try, Wendy’s. During an earnings call last month, President and CEO Kirk Tanner outlined the company’s plan to try a new form of pricing: “Beginning as early as 2025, we will begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing and day-part offerings along with AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling.”  None of the analysts on the call questioned the statement, but the backlash from the public was immediate — and quite negative. As Reuters described it: “the burger chain was scorched on social media sites.” Less than two weeks later Wendy’s backtracked – e...

The ‘Barbie Speech’ – How Much Has Really Changed For Women in America?
By MIKE MAGEE In our world where up is down, and black is white, there is a left and a right – it’s the middle we appear to be missing. Does it exist, or was it make believe all along? Into this existential despair enters Britt Cagle Grant, the 47-year old Federal Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The Stanford Law graduate, blessed by the Federalist Society and Leonard Leo, and former clerk of Hon. Brett Kavanaugh, was nominated by Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate on July 31, 2018. Now six years later, her words in rejecting DeSantis’s “Stop Woke Act” (otherwise kno...

Are AI Clinical Protocols A Dobb-ist Trojan Horse?
By MIKE MAGEE For most loyalist Americans at the turn of the 19th century, Justice John Marshall Harlan’s decision in Jacobson v. Massachusetts (1905). was a “slam dunk.” In it, he elected to force a reluctant Methodist minister in Massachusetts to undergo Smallpox vaccination during a regional epidemic or pay a fine. Justice Harlan wrote at the time: “Real liberty for all could not exist under the operation of a principle which recognizes the right of each individual person to use his own, whether in respect of his person or his property, regardless of the injury that may be done to others.” What could ...

We Freeze People, Don ’ t We?
By KIM BELLARD Perhaps you’ve heard about the controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling about in-vitro fertilization (IVF), in which the court declared that frozen embryos were people. The court stated that it has long held that “unborn children are ‘children,’” with Chief Justice Tom Parker – more on him later – opining in a concurring opinion: Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God, who views the destruction of His image as an affront to Himself. Even before birth, all human beings bear the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing...

Health IT Trends that Deserve More Attention
There are a lot of new ideas and technologies being made to better the world of healthcare. These new ideas and technologies are only successful, however, if enough people collectively take notice and talk about it in order to make it trend. But in a time when our industry is facing high staff overtime and burnout, there’s simply no way that we can be aware of everything happening in health IT. This then results in certain topics being neglected – regardless of their quality and how much you would personally like to see them trend. So what trend isn’t being talked about enough? What should be trending ri...

Digital Health, Menopause, And The $150 Billion Ignorance
The idea of this story came from personal experience. During the past year, I have spent countless hours and a bucketload of money trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with my health. I was feeling worse and worse, having various symptoms, totally inexplicable with my impeccable test results. During this journey, not a single doctor asked or suggested that my symptoms may come from entering perimenopause – the stage of life of women preceding menopause.  I am 47 years old, and as I have learned since then, extremely average in starting to have perimenopause symptoms at the age of 47. Also very average ...

What Do Fats Do in the Body?
It’s common knowledge that too much cholesterol and other fats can lead to disease and that a healthy diet involves watching how much fatty food we eat. However, our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function—and we can’t make it from scratch. Hepatocytes, like the one shown here, are the most abundant type of cell in the human liver. One important role they play is producing bile, a liquid that aids in digesting fats. Credit: Donna Beer Stolz, University of Pittsburgh. Triglycerides, cholesterol, and other essential fatty acids—the fats our bodies can’t make on their own—store energy, ins...

The Germline Impacts Life Span
One evolutionary perspective on life is that the individuals making up a species are secondary concerns, mere wrappers for the all-important germline cells. Evolution optimizes for success in propagation of the germline lineage, not the success of the individual. With that in mind, one might expect to find that the germline can influence the body. That influence doesn't have to be a net positive for the individual, as noted here. The individual is disposable, and health only matters insofar as it enhances reproductive fitness in the eternal, ever-shifting arms race that takes place over evolutionary time. Classica...
