Advance directives and mental disorders: a  practice recommendation of the Commission for Ethics and Law of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics
DISCUSSION: The DGPPN has developed an advance directive for the area of mental health and published it on its website together with detailed explanations. With the help of this advance directive, people can decide on their treatment in phases of incapacity to consent in the context of a mental crisis or illness.PMID:38700600 | DOI:10.1007/s00115-024-01662-0 (Source: Der Nervenarzt)

No client left behind: A meta-analysis of premature termination from psychotherapy in U.S. service members and veterans
Am Psychol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1037/amp0001320. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDropout has been identified as a significant problem among military populations seeking psychotherapy (Goetter et al., 2015; Hoge et al., 2014), yet an overall estimate of its exact prevalence and predictors does not exist. The aims of the current meta-analysis were to estimate outpatient psychotherapy dropout rates for this population and evaluate potential moderators of this event. In total, 283 articles-comprising data from 719,465 U.S. service members and veterans-met all inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The average...

A Cluster Analysis of Neuropsychological Impairment in Borderline Personality Disorder: Identifying a Neurocognitive Subtype Linked to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Two neuropsychological clusters of patients were found in the BPD sample: Cluster 1 patients showed greater impairment in working memory, while Cluster 2 patients had greater deficits of executive functioning, particularly for response inhibition and planning. In addition, BPD patients with greater executive deficits presented greater levels of ADHD clinical features. These findings might also facilitate earlier diagnosis of severe BPD patient profiles and to establish more personalized treatment based on neurocognitive stimulation.PMID:38695648 | DOI:10.1002/cpp.2979 (Source: Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy)

Efficacy of psilocybin for treating symptoms of depression: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Treatment effects of psilocybin were significantly larger among patients with secondary depression, when self-report scales were used to measure symptoms of depression, and when participants had previously used psychedelics. Further research is thus required to delineate the influence of expectancy effects, moderating factors, and treatment delivery on the efficacy of psilocybin as an antidepressant.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42023388065.PMID:38692686 | DOI:10.1136/bmj-2023-078084 (Source: Cancer Control)

Mental health in Parkinson ’s: Uncovering real-world patient experiences in psychological support and care
Background: Prior research has examined the effectiveness of psychological interventions in Parkinson ’s disease (PD), with mixed results. Yet few studies have sought to explore the lived experience of individuals with PD who have accessed professional psychological support. These studies are largely limited to examining specific psychotherapeutic interventions within a research trial context, so whether (and how) psychotherapy may be helpful (or not) in PD in a real world setting is underexplored. Protocol for a randomised controlled trial of ketamine versus ketamine and behavioural activation therapy for adults with treatment-resistant depression in the community
Introduction Although short-term benefits follow parenteral ketamine for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TR-MDD), there are challenges that prevent routine use of ketamine by clinicians. These include acute dissociative effects of parenteral ketamine, high relapse rates following ketamine dosing and the uncertain role of psychotherapy. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) seeks to establish the feasibility of evaluating repeated oral doses of ketamine and behavioural activation therapy (BAT), compared with ketamine treatment alone, for TR-MDD. We also aim to compare relapse rates between treatment arms to ...
