Social Determinants of Premature Birth
Social determinants of health have received increasing attention in public health, leading to increased understanding of how social factors —individual and contextual—shape the health of the mother and infant. However, racial differences in birth outcomes persist, with incomplete explanation for the widening disparity. Here, we highlight the social determinants of preterm birth, with special attention to the social experiences among African American women, which are likely attributed to structural racism and discrimination throughout life. Risk factors for infant hearing loss: a meta-analysis
Conclusion: The identification of these 14 interrelated risk factors can prove advantageous in clinical practice, as these findings could guide hearing screening and parental counseling. Furthermore, prospective research could be conducted to develop risk-based scoring systems based on these factors. What is Known:• Infant hearing loss is a worldwide issue.• Risk factors for this condition are debated. What is New:• This is the first meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate perinatal and postnatal risk factors for hearing loss in infants.• Intracranial hemorrhage, mechanical ventilation, and low birth weight are ass...

Describing energy expenditure in children with a chronic disease: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: Current literature on energy expenditure in children with chronic disease whilst extensive, reveals key future research opportunities. International collaboration and robust measurement of energy expenditure should be conducted to generate meaningful predictive energy equations to provide updated evidence that is reflective of the emerging disease modifying therapies.PROSPERO REGISTRY NUMBER: CRD42020204690.PMID:38432591 | DOI:10.1016/j.advnut.2024.100198 (Source: Adv Data)

Fluidity of equipoise in a Multi-Centred Pilot RCT: Influences on clinician Decision-Making in offering trial entry
Second trimester miscarriage and very early preterm birth is a multifactorial complex condition [1]. Women often with no previous history or identifiable risk factors can present in emergency situations with cervical dilatation and exposed, unruptured foetal membranes in the peri-viable gestation period [1,2]. Management of premature cervical dilatation is complex and the evidence for interventions to prevent premature birth is limited; the placement of Emergency Cervical Cerclage (ECC) in attempt to keep the cervix closed is sometimes considered [2].
