About Those “Misplaced” Classified Documents…
Patrick G. EddingtonNo one should envy Attorney General Merrick Garland. He now has another presidential scandal involving “misplaced” or otherwise purloined classified documents on his hands. Except this time, it involves President Joe Biden, the man who nominated Garland to be the nation’s chief law enforcement officer.Naturally, many of Biden ’s political opponents aredrawing parallels between the mountain of classified material that Donald Trump shipped to Mar ‐a‐Lago and the two batches (and counting?) of classified material in Biden’s possession outside of proper federal handling and storage chann...

Short-eared Owls on the Fens
I’ve discussed the Short-eared Owl, Asio flammeus, previously. Beautiful bird that occasionally overwinters in the UK, having spent the summer months in Iceland, Russia, or Scandinavia. We are lucky to see them hunting on the fens sometimes. These photos were taken in the hour before sunset at NT Burwell Fen. There were three shorties hunting. We usually anticipate their arrival in October, November, but they can sometimes arrive earlier and will stay until early April. There were half a dozen at Burwell a couple of years ago and one of them with damage to its wing (it could still fly) stayed through the summer mon...

Senior Gynaecologist fined for doing Anomaly Scan as it missed the Anomaly, Important Judgment
According to https://advrohiterande.blogspot.com/2023/01/a-senior-gynaecologist-fined-for-doing.html it appears to be a case of medical malpractice where Dr. Usha Mukhi, a gynaecologist, is being held liable for not detecting a congenital abdominal wall defect during an ultrasound examination of a patient ' s pregnancy. The patient, Seema Deswal, argues that the Dr. Mukhi should have referred her to a qualified radiologist and that the anomaly could have been detected earlier and the baby could have been aborted within 20 weeks of pregnancy. The case was initially dismissed by the District Forum, but was later allowed...

Activating Transparency in Health Care Pricing
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have taken up the campaign for price transparency over the past few years. The need for this is obvious and pressing. Unlike any other industry, health care institutions have historically been totally free to charge what they want and not even tell you in advance. Most of us have had lived the horror movie that follows a hospital stay, receiving a bill in the mail…and then another bill…and another… Hospitals have trouble predicting how much a procedure will cost for many reasons. They have a welter of agreements with different insurance companies and ...

This article on senolytic therapies to selectively remove senescent cells in old tissues is in part a matter of Unity Biotechnology talking up their position. The company suffered from first mover disadvantage in bringing senolytic drugs into clinical development. The field has made progress very rapidly over the last decade, and startups founded even just a couple of years after Unity's launch benefited from greater knowledge and a selection of better technologies to work with. Still, one can be talking up one's position and also be right. The accumulation of senescent cells is profoundly harmful, a significant contributi...

A Study in Which Exercise Fails to Improve Cognitive Function
It is interesting to see a study in which exercise failed to improve memory function in older adults, given the sizable number of studies showing that it does help. One possibility is that intensity of exercise matters. In general, however, the literature leans in the direction of exercise slowing cognitive decline. Yet no outcome in research is so guaranteed that there will be a complete absence of studies in which it fails to show up in the data; this is one of the challenges inherent in following the output of the scientific community. A large study that focused on whether exercise and mindfulness training coul...
