Quantitative but not qualitative flavor recognition impairments in COVID-19 patients
ConclusionData reported here suggests that a chemosensory impairment is present after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the modified “flavor test” could be a novel self-administering objective screening test to assess STDs in COVID-19 patients.Clinical trial registration no. NCT04840966; April 12, 2021, retrospectively registered (Source: Irish Journal of Medical Science)

The peppermint breath test benchmark for PTR-MS and SIFT-MS
A major challenge for breath research is the lack of standardization in sampling and analysis. To address this, a test that utilizes a standardized intervention and a defined study protocol has been proposed to explore disparities in breath research across different analytical platforms and to provide benchmark values for comparison. Specifically, the Peppermint Experiment involves the targeted analysis in exhaled breath of volatile constituents of peppermint oil after ingestion of the encapsulated oil. Data from the Peppermint Experiment performed by proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and selected i...

Aromatherapy to The Rescue for Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting
Post- operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) occurs in in approximately 30 to 37 % of patients. It is one of the most common complaints after surgery. A modality of pre-and post- operative antiemetics are routinely used, however PONV persists. The literature indicates that patients have reported significantly lower levels of PONV with aromatherapy. Inhaled aromatherapy that consists of a blend of essential oils such as spearmint, peppermint, lavender and ginger have been shown to decrease and eliminate PONV. Electro-hydrodynamic assisted synthesis of lecithin-stabilized peppermint oil-loaded alginate microbeads for intestinal drug delivery
Int J Biol Macromol. 2021 Jul 5;185:861-875. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2021.07.019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeppermint oil (PO) is the most prominent oil using in pharmaceutical formulations with its significant therapeutic value. In this sense, this oil is attracting considerable attention from the scientific community due to its traditional therapeutic claim, biological and pharmacological potential in recent research. An organic solvent-free and environment-friendly electrohydrodynamic assisted (EHDA) technique was employed to prepared PO-loaded alginate microbeads. The current study deals with the development, opti...

Preparation of Polyurethane/Pluronic F127 Nanofibers Containing Peppermint Extract Loaded Gelatin Nanoparticles for Diabetic Wounds Healing: Characterization, In Vitro, and In Vivo Studies
In this study, new peppermint extract was incorporated in the polyurethane- (PU-) based nanofibers for diabetic wound healing. The peppermint extract was used as an herbal antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. The absorption ability of the wound dressing was enhanced by addition of F127 pluronic into the polymer matrix. The release of the extract was optimized by crosslinking the extract with gelatin nanoparticles (CGN) and their eventual incorporation into the nanofibers. The release of the extract was also controlled through direct addition of the extract into the PU matrix. The results showed that the release of ex...

Fabrication and antibacterial evaluation of peppermint oil-loaded composite microcapsules by chitosan-decorated silica nanoparticles stabilized Pickering emulsion templating
Int J Biol Macromol. 2021 Jun 1:S0141-8130(21)01183-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2021.05.198. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNovel peppermint oil (PO)-loaded composite microcapsules (CM) with hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC)/chitosan/silica shells were effectively fabricated by PO Pickering emulsion, which were stabilized with chitosan-decorated silica nanoparticles (CSN). The surface modification of chitosan could improve the hydrophobicity of silica nanoparticles and favor their adsorption at the oil-water interface of PO Pickering emulsions. The microcapsule composite shells were formed dependent on the electrostatic ...

Ultrasmall nanocapsules obtained by controlling Ostwald ripening
We describe here a method to synthesize ultrasmall nanocapsules with a diameter of 6 nm, exhibiting a well-defined core-shell morphology. Remarkably, the nanocapules are synthesized in a miniemulsion process without the need of large amounts of surfactant as commonly used in the microemulsion process. Ultrasmall nanocapsules with an oil core and a silica shell are formed by the concurrent processes of a sol-gel reaction and Ostwald ripening. Using solvents with different water solubilities and alkoxysilanes with different reactivities, we demonstrate that sizes of obtained nanocapsules depend on the ripening rate and alkox...
