Crustacean female sex hormone: More than a female phenotypes-related hormone in a protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism shrimp
In conclusion, this study provides convincing evidence that CFSH expedites the feminization process and impedes masculinization by inhibiting IAG in hermaphroditic crustaceans.PMID:36965556 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.124181 (Source: International Journal of Biological Macromolecules)

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2865: In Vitro Antiglycation and Methylglyoxal Trapping Effect of Peppermint Leaf (Mentha & times; piperita L.) and Its Polyphenols
Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2865: In Vitro Antiglycation and Methylglyoxal Trapping Effect of Peppermint Leaf (Mentha × piperita L.) and Its Polyphenols Molecules doi: 10.3390/molecules28062865 Authors: Izabela Fecka Katarzyna Bednarska Adam Kowalczyk The most significant reactive α-dicarbonyl RCS involved in the pathomechanism of glycation and related diseases is methylglyoxal (MGO). Hyperglycemia promotes the generation of MGO and leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Therefore, MGO trapping and glycation inhibition appear to be important therapeutic targets i...

Geckos differentiate self from other using both skin and faecal chemicals: evidence towards self-recognition?
Anim Cogn. 2023 Feb 8. doi: 10.1007/s10071-023-01751-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelf-recognition is the ability to recognise stimuli originating from oneself. Humans and some non-human animals show evidence of true visual self-recognition in the mirror test. They use their reflection to inspect themselves and to remove a mark that is only visible in the mirror. Not all animals, however, rely primarily on vision. In lizards, chemical cues are crucial in social interactions, and therefore, lizards would benefit from a chemical self-other distinction. Here, we test the tokay gecko (Gekko gecko), a social species, on the...

Obtaining poly (lactic acid) nanofibers encapsulated with peppermint essential oil as potential packaging via solution-blow-spinning
In this study, nanofiber mats of poly (lactic acid)/ polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) blend incorporated with peppermint essential oil (PO) at different ratios (5-20 % v/w) were produced by solution-blow-spinning (SBS) for potential packaging application. Electron microscopy showed a cylindrical and interlaced morphology for PLA/PEG/PO and a significant increase in the diameter (139-192 nm) of the nanofibers by increasing PO content. All nanofibers showed high thermal stability (278-345 °C) suitable for use in the food industry. Nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectrum confirmed PO in the nanofibers after SBS. ATR-FTIR ...

Current use of complementary and conventional medicine for treatment of pediatric patients with gastrointestinal disorders
Infants, children, and adolescents are at risk of experiencing a multitude of gastrointestinal disorders (GID). These disorders can adversely affect the quality of life or be life-threatening. Various interventions that span the conventional and complementary therapeutic categories have been developed. Nowadays, parents increasingly seek complementary options for their children to use concurrently with conventional therapies. Due to the high prevalence and morbidity of diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in children, in this review, we decided to focus on the current state of the evidence for convent...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 901: Plant Essential Oils as Healthy Functional Ingredients of Nutraceuticals and Diet Supplements: A Review
migli Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile molecules endowed with health-promoting biological activities that go beyond their role as aromas and natural preservatives and can be exploited to develop functional foods and diet supplements. Their composition is briefly addressed along with regulatory aspects. The potential health benefit of human diet supplementation with EOs is outlined through a review of the recent literature on available clinical trials and preclinical research concerning EOs activity towards: (1) irritable bowel syndrome; (2) inflammatory bowel disease; (3) regulation of microbiota; (4) gast...
