To your own Vulcan self: Be true
“What would Spock think about the ‘husky’ designation?” That’s what I was pondering. I was wondering how the master of logic would justify and make sense of the clearly derogatory way I was feeling about myself. “Fascinating,” I imagined him saying, and he would raise that patented eyebrow. Then I looked in the mirror, furrowed my brow, took note of the barely present peach fuzz growing under my nose, and with all the power of a Vulcan mind meld, I imagined that my right eyebrow was being pulled by a thread towards the stars. That one eyebrow was to boldly go where no eyebrow of mine had ever gone before. And...

Parents and Taxpayers Want More Educational Choice
Jason Bedrick Ever since Georgia enacted a scholarship tax credit law in 2008, individual and corporate taxpayers in the Peach State could receive dollar-for-dollar tax credits in return for contributions to nonprofit scholarship organizations—at least until the $58 million cap is reached. Donors are eligible to receive credits starting on January 1st of each year. In 2012, the last of the credits were claimed in mid-August. The following year, donors hit the cap in May. Last year, they hit it in just three weeks. This year, all the credits were claimed within hours of becoming available on January 1st. In fact, taxpaye...

Viroids, infectious agents that encode no proteins
Genomes of non-defective viruses range in size from 2,400,000 bp of dsDNA (Pandoravirus salinus) to 1,759 bp of ssDNA (porcine circovirus). Are even smaller viral genomes possible? The subviral agents called viroids provide an answer to this question. Viroids, the smallest known pathogens, are naked, circular, single-stranded RNA molecules that do not encode protein yet replicate autonomously when introduced into host plants. Potato spindle tuber viroid, discovered in 1971, is the prototype; 29 other viroids have since been discovered ranging in length from 120 to 475 nucleotides. Viroids only infect plants; some cause ec...

Carbon Dioxide Enrichment of Peach Trees: How Sweet It Is!
Craig D. Idso In our all-too-politically-correct world, carbon dioxide (CO2) frequently gets a bad rap, demonized for its potential and unverified effects on climate. However, if the truth be told, carbon dioxide is a magnificent molecule, essential to nearly all life on Earth. It is the primary raw material from which plants construct their tissues and grow during the process of photosynthesis. Perhaps it should come as no surprise, therefore, that plants perform this essential function ever better as atmospheric CO2 levels climb ever higher, a fact demonstrated in literally thousands of laboratory and field studies (see...

34 Ways to Encourage Positive Thinking
The brain is a powerful organ; it controls the entire body. But your thought process is much more influential. Your thoughts dictate who you become, what you do, and the success you’ll have. Take some time to really analyze your thoughts. Which direction do they point you? Buddha said, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” If an inventory of your thought process yields more negative thinking than positive, it’s time to make some changes. Here are 34 things you can do to encourage positive thinking. Stop saying, “I can’t.” If you hear it too often, you’ll convince yourself it’s true. In...
