Dante Labs Full Genome Sequencing: A Medgadget Review
Conclusion In reading my report I found it was important to be mindful of the complexity of the genome’s effects and the relative infancy of much of the research surrounding this. For instance, I possess gene variants associated with both an increased and decreased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, based on current research. There are a number of more clear-cut aspects to the sequencing, such as drug interactions and carrier status of genetic diseases, which I think do give genuine peace of mind. The more light-hearted traits around food preferences and lifestyle quirks do appear to have impressive accuracy. And I am sure t...

Wheat Belly: Quick and Dirty #3
In view of the many new readers on the Wheat Belly Blog, many of whom have not yet had an opportunity to read the book but are eager to get started, here is the most recently updated Wheat Belly Quick & Dirty summary. It summarizes the essential dietary strategies of the Wheat Belly approach to 1) avoid all products made from high-yield, semi-dwarf wheat that wreak health destruction along with all other grains, and 2) create a diet that is otherwise healthy and appropriate for all members of the family. In particular, I’ve tried to clarify some items that were unclear in previous versions. This is the lifestyle ...

Emulsifiers: Like detergent to your intestines
If you have been following the Undoctored and Wheat Belly concepts, you are cultivating healthy bowel flora, efforts that include “seeding” your intestines with a high-potency, multi-species probiotic and fermented foods, and nourishing bowel flora with prebiotic fibers. But there are other issues to consider. Today, I discuss the emerging wisdom on emulsifying agents and why we should avoid them to regain healthy bowel flora and overall health. The capacity for a compound to emulsify a solution varies from minimal to dramatic. Even some natural compounds in whole, unprocessed foods can exert modest emulsifyin...

No-Knead Whole Wheat Bread
Summers in the mountains means bread. I rarely make bread at home in New York City. Not that I couldn’t. After all, this bread is easy enough to make, and despite it’s long rise time, requires very little of my attention. But thinking about making bread does require, for me at least, a relaxed, open mind. And the inward assurance that in 18 hours I will still be available to move the bread on to it’s second rise, and then to it’s baking. Coordinating that with my schedule in the city makes the bread making feel like a chore and not the joy it is when I undertake it here at the cottage. Here, the day...

Its Not All Peaches And Roses
Life as an unhealthy person is not all peaches and roses.... Wednesday I wroteabout Claire the amazing woman with CF who is full of energy and fun and talks about things we don ' t want to talk about - like dying. Anyway, she says she wants to wrote a book but not one about a ' happy sick person ' . There are a lot of books out there about ' happy sick ' people but reading them doesn ' t necessarily make you feel happy for them.Honestly who can put a perky spin on being sick? One of the many downsides of life with chronic illnesses is that a little thing becomes a big thing. You have no idea.Anyway, the world is papered wi...

Eating the Same Foods Repeatedly Is Stupid
Do you have a tendency to eat the same foods over and over? Are you aware that it’s much better for your overall health, mental functioning, and immunity to take in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts, and seeds? Eating the same limited foods repeatedly increases the chance that you’ll miss out on certain micronutrients, including many that haven’t been identified or studied yet. A nutritionally restricted diet also increases your susceptibility to disease. Our forager ancestors moved around a lot and ate nutritionally different wild foods wherever they went. With the rise of agriculture, h...

Calon Cardio ’s MiniVAD Left Ventricluar Assist Device Set for 2018 Clinical Trials
Working with the University of Swansea, Calon Cardio, a Welsh firm, has created the first UK-developed Left Ventricluar Assist Device (LVAD). The MiniVAD is scheduled to begin a 50 patient clinical trial in late 2018, with a full clinical rollout planned for 2020. Calon Cardio’s miniature implantable heart pump is used to treat advanced chronic heart failure, with the LVAD augmenting the weakened heart and providing adequate blood perfusion to the rest of the body. By reducing the load on the ventricles the device can then slow or stall heart failure progression, and prolong the life of patients waiting for a heart ...

Win for School Choice in Georgia
Lost in all thecommotion over the U.S. Supreme Court ’sseveral decisions today is another important decision with ramifications for school choice. The Georgia Supreme Courtunanimously ruled in  Gaddy v. Georgia Department of Revenue that plaintiffs had no standing to challenge the state ’stax-credit scholarship program because the scholarship funds are private funds, not a government expenditure:We also reject the assertion that plaintiffs have standing because these tax credits actually amount to unconstitutional expenditures of tax revenues or public funds. The statutes that govern the Program demonstrate that only ...
