March Madness
They say it takes a village to raise a child. And that it so true,.especially when the child is just two years old and needs full time supervision. In my case, it takes a husband, a friend, and a babysitter for the week as I try to recover from the virus that put me in the hospital over the weekend & caused fluid to accumulate in the heart sac. I wish for my mom in circumstances like this, but she is 2 states away and works full time..not practical to come up,unless I'm dying. It started late Thursday morning, a heavy sort of chest pain with random stabbing action on the side. It didn't feel muscoskeletal or heartburnish,an...

GlaxoSmithKline Lobbies Against E-cigarettes; Motivation for Company Clear
Here's the best article I have come across about e-cigarettes from Business Week (see: E-Cigarettes: A $1.5 Billion Industry Braces for FDA Regulation). You may be aware that there is now a discussion taking place about whether e-cigarettes should be regulated and also whether they will cause non-smokers to get hooked on nicotine (see: A Hot Debate Over E-Cigarettes as a Path to Tobacco, or From It). At any rate, here's another slant on the issue about regulation of the product: GlaxoSmithKline is actively lobbying for restrictions on e-cigarettes (see: GlaxoSmithKline lobbies for restrictions on e-cigs, whic...

More Knitted Hats and Some Fingerless Mitts
I have a lot of nieces (11)/ nephews (11)and a growing number of great-nieces (up to 8) with two new ones this year) and great-nephew (3 now).  I've been on a roll this year with knitting gifts for some of them. These first two were made using left over yarn from the slippers.   Both were made using the pattern Regular Guy Beanie by Chuck Wright.  Both went to great-nephews for Christmas.  I downsized the regular guy beanie pattern, casting on only 72 stitches rather than 84.   Second regular guy beanie made in child size: I used the regular guy beanie pattern for this one for a ...

Web of Knowledge Alert - INTELLIGENCE
This study is among the firstto use a large and representative sample of secondary school students (N= 563) to examine different measurement models of CPS-that conceptualizethe construct as either faceted or hierarchical-and their implicationsfor the construct's validity. Results showed that no matter which way itwas conceptualized, CPS was substantially related to reasoning and todifferent indicators of educational success. Controlling for reasoningwithin a joint hierarchical measurement model, however, revealed thatthe impressive external validity was largely attributable to thevariance that CPS shares with reasoning, su...

Malaise…
I was trying to figure out this much maligned malaise I am in today when I remembered my father gave me my medications yesterday at 2 PM after he closed the pharmacy at noon and they have long since worn off. I took some more of my psychiatric medications and hopefully in an hour I will be feeling better.  I also think my blood pressure medication is the key component to me feeling better today. Especially regarding the fatigue I feel. Corralled By Graybeard… Earlier today, I was driving to my parent’s house to pick up some lunch.  Graybeard, with his Gilligan’s hat, waves me to a stop practically getting...

Sadly, American Lung Association Op-Ed Lies About Tobacco Industry's Use of Electronic Cigarette Flavors
According to an op-ed piece by the American Lung Association (ALA) published last Thursday, the tobacco industry is marketing electronic cigarettes to kids by enticing them with sweet flavors, including cotton candy, atomic fireball, and gummy bear.According to the ALA: "E-cigarette use among middle school children has doubled in just one year. ... Yet, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still is not regulating e-cigarettes.  The absence of regulatory oversight means the tobacco industry is free to promote Atomic Fireball or cotton candy-flavored e-cigarettes to our children. ... Big Tobacco is happy to hook ...

The Road to Success: Tips for Feeding Your Toddler – Part One
As your baby grows into toddlerhood his taste buds and tolerances will be more in line with an adult’s. However, you want to make sure that the food he (or she) eats is still the best that you can offer because what he learns to like now will probably stay with him for a very long time. Toddler Food Rejection Toddlers are constantly testing limits and mealtimes are no exception. Expect plenty of refusals. At mealtimes, you never know when he will reject a food, even a food that he previously relished. Try not to take rejections personally and continue to keep mealtimes pleasant and relaxing. As a new parent you have alre...

Tramadol Turns Out to Be a Natural Product
Every so often reports appear that some synthetic compound actually turns out to be a natural product. Sometimes these make very little sense, and turn out to be analytical mistakes (as with this report of nevirapine). But sometimes they're right. This one looks as if it's right, though. Nauclea latifola, known colloquially as the "African peach", apparently has tramadol in it. That's pretty interesting, since tramadol was previously known as a synthetic opioid agonist (among other activities), used as an analgesic since the 1970s. Fittingly, preparations from this same species show up in a number of traditional medicine ...

Baby’s First Foods: Tips for adding fruit and wheat germ to baby’s diet
Peaches are safe to feed your baby at 6 months. Peaches are a terrific source of fiber and a good source of Vitamins A and C. Pears are a terrific source of fiber and Vitamin C and are also safe to feed at 6 months. Both are, of course, delicious. Selection of Peaches and Pears Select firm or slightly soft peaches with a nice fragrance. Color is important. Peaches should have a yellow or cream-colored skin, and most varieties also have a red blush. Stay away from peaches with any green color. Pears are usually sold green and turn yellow as they ripen. Select pears that are plump and firm, but not hard. Pears are ripe when ...
