Parathyroidectomy: still the best choice for the management of severe secondary hyperparathyroidism
CONCLUSION: PTX still seems to be the best treatment choice for SHPT, especially in patients with prolonged diseases in unresourceful scenarios.PMID:38039492 | DOI:10.1590/2175-8239-JBN-2023-0024en (Source: Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia)

Genetics of hereditary forms of primary hyperparathyroidism
Hormones (Athens). 2023 Dec 1. doi: 10.1007/s42000-023-00508-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), a relatively common disorder characterized by hypercalcemia with raised or inappropriately normal serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations, may occur as part of a hereditary syndromic disorder or as a non-syndromic disease. The associated syndromic disorders include multiple endocrine neoplasia types 1-5 (MEN1-5) and hyperparathyroidism with jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndromes, and the non-syndromic forms include familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia types 1-3 (FHH1-3), familial isolated hyperpara...

Long-term effects of hypercalcemia in kidney transplant recipients with persistent hyperparathyroidism
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term persistent mild hypercalcemia (tertiary hyperparathyroidism) was frequent in kidney transplant recipients in our series. This condition presented with lower phosphate and 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and higher urinary calcium and intact fibroblast growth factor 23 levels compared to kidney transplant recipients without hypercalcemia, resembling a mild form of primary hyperparathyroidism. Despite these metabolic derangements, the risk of adverse graft outcomes was low.PMID:38032457 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01815-5 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Thyrotoxicosis, not hyperthyroidism, is a frequent sequelae of parathyroidectomy
Thyrotoxicosis following parathyroidectomy is a common phenomenon, yet it is frequently unrecognized and underappreciated and often inaccurately referred to as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a syndrome that occurs from excess synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland. It is distinct from thyrotoxicosis, in which excess thyroid hormone may also occur from thyroid hormone released from the thyroid gland or from sources other than the thyroid gland. This is an important distinction because thioamide drugs are not effective for treatment of thyrotoxicosis that occurs as a result of release of thyro...

Treatment of Hypercalcemic Hyperparathyroidism After Kidney Transplantation Is Associated With Improved Allograft Survival
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that treatment of hypercalcemic tertiary HPT post-KT is associated with improved allograft survival. Although these findings are not specific to hypercalcemia of malignancy, they do demonstrate the negative impact of hypercalcemic tertiary HPT on kidney function. Hypercalcemic HPT should be screened and aggressively treated post-KT.PMID:38006197 | DOI:10.1093/oncolo/oyad314 (Source: The Oncologist)

Advantages of total parathyroidectomy in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism induced by end stage renal disease
DiscussionsAfter analyzing the obtained results, our conclusion was that total parathyroidectomy is the intervention of choice for patients suffering from secondary hyperparathyroidism when pharmacotherapy fails in order to prevent recurrence of the disease and to correct the metabolic parameters. Preoperative workup for parathyroidectomy plus auto-transplantation and results in the elderly with secondary hyperparathyroidism
CONCLUSIONS: After a meticulous preoperative workup, parathyroidectomy plus autotransplantation can be performed safely for the treatment of symptomatic secondary hyperparathyroidism in the elderly to improve their quality of life and decrease their incidence of bone fractures.PMID:37989683 | DOI:10.1016/j.asjsur.2023.10.003 (Source: Asian Journal of Surgery)
