Expression of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) and Astacin Genes of < em > Strongyloides stercoralis < /em > as well as HSP70 and HSP17.1 Genes of < em > S. ratti < /em > in Adult and Larval Stages of < em > S. stercoralis < /em >
CONCLUSION: Higher expression levels of Sst-ast, Sst-hsp-70, and Sra-hsp-70 genes in the larval stages of S. stercoralis suggest the potential role of these enzymes in parasite cutaneous invasion and pathogenesis. However, higher expression of Srahsp-17.1 in adult forms is probably involved in resistance and survival mechanisms. The similarity in gene expression between S. stercoralis and S. ratti can provide helpful hints to better understand strongyloidiasis from various perspectives, including pathogenesis, proper diagnosis, and targeted treatment.PMID:38654956 | PMC:PMC11033530 | DOI:10.18502/ijpa.v19i1.15187 (Source: ...

Malaria in a vulnerable population living in quilombo remnant communities in the Brazilian Amazon: a cross-sectional study from 2005-2020
Rev Inst Med Trop Sao Paulo. 2024 Apr 19;66:e25. doi: 10.1590/S1678-9946202466025. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTQuilombo remnant communities are areas officially recognized by the Brazilian government as historical communities founded by formerly enslaved individuals. These communities are mostly located in the endemic areas of malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. We retrospectively described the prevalence of malaria among individuals living in 32 recognized quilombo remnant communities in the Baiao and Oriximina municipalities located in the Para State. The number of malaria cases and the Annual Parasitic Incidence (API) recorde...

Global distribution patterns and geographic range of Cymothoa Fabricius, 1793 (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) associated with host fish
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 22;96(1):e20230706. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230706. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTOver recent years, fish parasites of the genus Cymothoa Fabricius, 1793, have received increased attention due to both their ecological and their economic importance to aquaculture and fishery. As the studies about Cymothoa have increased this improve our understanding on the host specificity and distribution of these parasites. The aim of this paper was to review the current global geographic distribution, distribution patterns and parasite-host interactions patterns of Cymothoa spp. associated with fish from mari...

Infected pulmonary hydatid cyst: A challenging diagnosis
Saudi Med J. 2024 Apr;45(4):433-436. doi: 10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230078.ABSTRACTEchinococcosis is a parasitic infection that is distributed worldwide. Its clinical presentation depends on the size and location of the cyst. A 7-year-old was found with a superimposed infected pulmonary hydatid cyst that was initially misdiagnosed as complicated pneumonia. Our case underscores the challenges of diagnosing and managing echinococcosis, emphasizes the need for a high index of suspicion, and describes the disease's ability to mimic other clinical entities.PMID:38657978 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230078 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

A 4-Year-Old Child with a Giant Cerebral Hydatid Cyst: A Case Report
Iran J Parasitol. 2024 Jan-Mar;19(1):113-116. doi: 10.18502/ijpa.v19i1.15218.ABSTRACTEchinococcosis is the most common cestode infection globally caused by the Echinococcus species. The most common organ involvement is the lungs and liver, but other organs can be rarely involved. Here, we present a case with a giant cerebral hydatid cyst. A 4-year-old boy presented with abnormal gait and walking at Marmara University School of Medicine Pendik Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Türkiye in September 2022. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed a cyst of 13 cm in diameter. The cyst was enucleated successfully with ...
