The projected increase of vertebral osteomyelitis in Germany implies a demanding challenge for future healthcare management of aging populations
ConclusionsOur data suggest that increasing IR of VO will seriously challenge healthcare systems, particularly due to demographic change and increasing proportions of populations turning 75  years and older. With respect to globally fast aging populations, future health care policies need to address this burden by anticipating limitations in financial and human resources and developing high-level evidence-based guidelines for prevention and interdisciplinary treatment. Sonographic diagnosis of spondylodiscitis in a young child
AbstractSonographic diagnosis of spondylodiscitis is described in a 21-month-old girl who presented with altered gait. Spondylodiscitis, also referred to as discitis-osteomyelitis, is an infection of the intervertebral disc and adjacent vertebrae. The imaging modality of choice is spinal magnetic resonance imaging. Our case is the first description in the English language of the sonographic diagnosis of spondylodiscitis. Pediatric radiologists and sonographers should be acquainted with its features, for both incidental and intentional diagnosis. (Source: Pediatric Radiology)

Reconstruction of the Talus and Calcaneus Using a Three-Dimensional (3D)-Printed Custom Implant Following a Shotgun Wound: A Case Report
We present a case detailing the successful reconstruction of the hindfoot in a 15-year-old male patient who suffered a self-inflicted shotgun wound. The patient had multiple complex fractures in these bones, resulting in considerable bone loss and the destruction of the articular surface. Considering the extent of the injuries and the failure of prior intervention from an outside surgeon, traditional reconstruction methods would not have adequately addressed the severity of the damage. Consequently, the treating physician opted to address the deformity using a three-dimensional (3D)-printed custom implant to salvage the li...

Systematic Review of Heel Puncture-Related Osteomyelitis of the Calcaneus in Newborn Infants
ConclusionsThis study offers valuable insights into a rare condition, including its epidemiology, clinical and laboratory characteristics, and treatment options for infants with HP-CO. To prevent the risk of osteomyelitis in this vulnerable group of patients, increasing awareness and maintaining strict aseptic techniques is necessary. We recommend that infants presenting with tenderness, redness, purulent discharge, erythema, or fever and with a history of repeated HP and swollen ankles should be evaluated for suspicion of osteomyelitis.A graphical abstract is avilable for this article.Graphical Abstract (Source: Infectiou...

Maxillary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Enshrouded as Osteomyelitis: A Case Report
AbstractExtranodal non-Hodgkin ’s lymphoma (NHL) afflicting the head and neck region is rare, accounting for only about 5%. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of NHL affecting the oral cavity. Due to its variable clinical presentation and non-pathognomic course, it can be easily misdiagnosed with over lapping characteristics to common oral pathologies. In the present case, the authors report an unusual presentation of DLBCL and highlight the significant diagnostic challenge encountered by the clinician. In our case, osteonecrosis of the maxilla with soft tissue swelling misleads the diagnosis o...

Diabetic Osteomyelitis: Oral vs Intravenous Antibiotics at a Single Level 1 Academic Medical Trauma Center
Residual osteomyelitis is a frequent problem following surgical intervention for diabetic foot infection. The current Infectious Disease Society of America guidelines recommend 4-6 weeks of initial intravenous antibiotics for treatment of residual osteomyelitis. However, recent literature suggests oral antibiotic therapy is not inferior to intravenous therapy. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate treatment success in 128 patients receiving oral versus intravenous antibiotics for residual osteomyelitis in the diabetic foot after amputation at a Level 1 academic medical trauma center. Can jaw bone healed from chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis be considered healthy when planning dental implants? Case report with 20-year follow-up
CONCLUSION: This case report presents the treatment history of this patient. With a longitudinal observation period of greater than 20 years, the results of this case demonstrate the successful treatment of bone with CO, CSO, and Corynebacterium spp. infection. Following the removal of infected bone, radical debridement, and long-term antibiotic therapy, bone health was restored.PMID:38576989 | PMC:PMC10990345 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001826 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Pediatric mandibular chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis: A case report with 12 years of radiologic follow-up
Imaging Sci Dent. 2024 Mar;54(1):93-104. doi: 10.5624/isd.20230189. Epub 2024 Feb 6.ABSTRACTChronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is histologically characterized by nonspecific osteitis. This inflammatory disorder, which lacks an infectious origin, typically presents with chronic pain and swelling at the affected site that can persist for months or even years. However, it is rare for CNO to affect the mandible. A 10-year-old girl presented with a primary complaint of pain in her left mandible. She had no significant medical or dental history. On examination, swelling was visible on the left buccal side, and imaging reve...
