Turning 53 and Up to My Ass in Whey Protein Powder
Yep, in attempt to solidify my health blogging reputation as a PR rep's worst nightmare, this post is indeed partly about some very tasty 365 Everyday Value Vanilla Whey Protein powder. How thrilled the folks at Whole Foods will be to see they've secured a great blog review accompanied by reference to, and a picture of, the reviewer's posterior! But hey, we're all about multi-tasking here at Cranky Fitness, so the post is also about greed, aging, and birthdays.  Plus it contains a sincere cry for help. So here's the deal, in ten twelve easy steps. Plus, I added bold text to make it easier for skimmers! 1.  A...

A Quick Tip
Let's see if it's possible for me to write a short blog post, sharing just one tip I learned recently.  And if anyone else has a quick tip to share in the comments, that would be awesome. Brevity is a skill I need to learn to employ occasionally, both for my sanity and yours.  Can I write a blog post in less than 250 words, including the usual meandering introduction? We shall see! So the exciting trick I recently learned was... A Faster Way to Brown Onions. OK, so maybe not so exciting. And I know onions are not everyone's best friend. However, I love onions, especially when they are brown and sweet.&...

Divergent Paths to Take
It is bedtime here.  Maggie is out on the back deck in the cool night air.  She will come on in when things quiet down some, namely me quieting down, and the neighborhood dogs quiet down some as well. They are all communicating in this revelry and Maggie is joining in. It is like the greater good dog neighbor association. I will probably have one more cola, watch a video review on a gaming laptop that is supposed to be thinner than a dime, and go to bed. I have fresh Gain infused freshly washed sheets to greet me tonight.   Or We could get out the Dobsonian telescope and try to find the Andromeda gala...

Cupcakes and Gardens and Racing, Oh My!
By Jan Chait It’s all my fault. I knew this week was coming and I should have prepared for it by writing this week’s blog entry ahead. Well, I have a huge secret: I “grew up” in a newsroom for a daily newspaper and everything I ever wrote was on deadline. There was no time to do much of anything ahead. So that’s what I’m used to and you’re going to get a bit of a potpourri of topics. What’s this week? My granddaughter’s graduation from high school. There’s already been one party, which took place in a park near our house on Sunday. She and a friend planned it and ...

Self-Managing Cholesterol
By David Spero As a recent study indicates, reducing LDL (“bad" cholesterol) can help prevent complications in most people with diabetes. Why is LDL cholesterol a bad thing, and how do you get to a healthy level? First, what is cholesterol? Discovered in 1769 by analyzing gallstones, cholesterol is a fat-like organic chemical that is an essential part of animal cell membranes. Without it, cells won't function properly. Cholesterol is made into bile, which is needed for digesting fats. It is also helps produce the body's natural steroids, including our sex hormones and the vital stress hormone cortisol. Cholesterol ...

How Was My Week? It Had Its Ups and Downs.
By Jan Chait Maybe we should all pack day bags with our diabetes essentials in them when we go out to events. Say to watch a parade, or a ballgame, engage in a day of shopping…or cheer on somebody running a marathon. What would you — and I — need if, say, a bomb went off and we unexpectedly ended up in a hospital or couldn't get home or our hotel was off limits (or partially gone)? It's something to think about. Along with "what's this world coming to, anyway?" My weekend was busy. We had a gardening resource fair at the synagogue and I took a portable garden that was two feet by four feet and set it on...

More Standout Foods Take Center Stage
By Amy Campbell At a time when it seems like we're constantly being told what NOT to eat, it's refreshing to know that there are so many healthful, nutritious foods that are available for our enjoyment. So, without further ado, here are a few more for your consideration! Garlic. Garlic is one of those foods that people tend to either love or hate. Its other name is the "stinking rose," which is fitting, given its pungent smell and flavor. Garlic belongs to the same family as onions and leeks, and it's rich in sulfur-containing compounds called thiosulfinates, sulfoxides, and dithiins. Don't worry about what these are, let ...

Experience Umami “The Fifth Taste” with this Ratatouille Recipe
How Humans Experience Taste If I asked you to name a food you’ve had that fits into each of the categories of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, you could do it with ease. But what about umami? (ewww-mom-e) Umami is the least known taste in our culture and satisfies the heading of savory flavors. Asian countries celebrate this wonderful flavor with fermented beans and grains, as well as shiitake mushrooms. The most common umami product is soy sauce, a fermented condiment. Glutamate (an amino acid) is responsible for the unique umami taste. You’ve probably had umami before, perhaps without realizing it. Examples include me...

Struggling With Balanced Eating Habits? Choose My Plate!
If you have ever played darts, or even if you just understand it, then you know how to use “Choose My Plate” to help you put together healthy plates at each meal. Choose my plate is the guide (and best I’ve seen) from the USDA to empower people to make healthy food choices. Why darts? I compare “Choose My Plate” to darts because of the “bullseye”. In darts, you strive to hit the bullseye. You aim to get as close as you can pretty much every throw, and sometimes (let’s face it) you’re happy to get on the board! That is how I view the realities of healthy eating. There&...

Cozy Up to this Healthy Vegetable Chili Recipe
I originally found this recipe in Food and Wine magazine. I tried it out with my friend and marathon running buddy Rolando. He’s the kind of guy who buys stuff from the store and “pretends” he made it. I really don’t care because he is an amazing host and friend — and he always provides enough wine! I can also say as a new mom, dinner is harder than ever to get on the table (y’all with me). This is an easy recipe that lasts and freezes well. It’s also versatile. You can change the toppings, wrap it in a tortilla with some spinach, or even add a little to a couple eggs for a savory ...

Getting Your Family On Board with Life Changes
‘Men learn while they teach.’ ~Seneca the Younger By Leo Babauta It is a curious phenomena that when we try to change our habits — simplify our clutter, eat healthier, start exercising — the other people in our life don’t instantly want to be changed in the same way. It’s as if they had their own minds! Horrible as that might sound, it’s the reality we have to deal with if we have a family (or friends, roommates, coworkers, etc.). They often resist changes we make, or their possibly unhealthy habits stand in our way. You’re trying to eat only whole foods, and yet your d...
