Low-FODMAP Diet: A New Fad?
By Amy Campbell Back in 2009 (can it really be that long ago?), I wrote a short series on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a condition (not a disease) characterized by a number of symptoms including bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. About one in five Americans has IBS, and having it can range from being mildly annoying to downright debilitating. There are different kinds of treatments available, including changing one's diet, exercising, stress reduction, and medication. A treatment from down under People who have IBS will tell you that sometimes the above approaches work for them, and sometimes th...

Kelp Noodles, Beer, Sin, and Goals
Yep, it's time for this months' goal support post! For those who are not regulars here, the post is mainly a chance for people to check in and leave comments about what challenges they might be tackling, or how things are going generally, as well as to offer support to others who are doing the same.  Comments and comment replies are thus highly encouraged. And, as is traditional, I will also cram a bunch of seemingly unrelated things together and force them into a theme involving goals.   In fact I probably should have used a catchier title, one like: "Surprising Motivational Secret You Won't Believe!"  ...

Sciencebase FeedMyReads Q&A #DBQuestions
The excellent author-reader twitter community hosted by FeedMyReads (aka Fraser Stoopman), put out a call for questions from twitter users for me, sciencebase, this week. Fraser has been sharing my answers to the intriguing and amusing questions in a spate of tweets, but I thought I’d post them all in one place for Sciencebase visitors, so here they. Thanks for your questions, especially the fun ones from Sime. Henry Gee – What gets you up in the morning? Usually, a dig in the ribs from my wife expecting a cup of tea and the dulcet tones of Humphrys et al with the news headlines on the radio. And, of course, th...

In the Good Hands of Helen…
Helen called me last hour and told me she had cooked a big lunch for my parents. Especially for my mother. I hurried over to my parent’s house to eat a hearty meal. Helen said my mother ate two platefuls. I went back for seconds myself as well. It was just too delicious to miss. I especially enjoyed the summer squash with Vidalia onions. We also had a baked pork chop, black eyed peas, cole slaw, creamed potatoes, and cornbread. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

recalibrating
I know there's a touch of irony in adding this disclaimer given that I haven't updated this blog in, like, half a year, but: LONG ENTRY AHEAD.There's a snippet of a cartoon I remember from my childhood--I can't remember if it was "Tom and Jerry" but if it wasn't it was in a similar vein--where a mouse is reclining in a hot tub. He's sitting back with his arms along the rim of the tub, maxing and relaxing as cartoon mice do, wearing that look of smug satisfaction he was prone to. (As an aside: I never liked Jerry. I always thought he was a real jerk to Tom, a cat who was just fulfilling his evolutionary imperative after all...

The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

Ask the Nutritionist: Bloating Blues and Other Digestive Dilemmas
Today's question involves bloat and other sorts of stomach and intestinal distress. Why?  Well, for one, Crabby is one of those people who frequently bloats up like a Thanksgiving Day Parade float. She was eager to hear some expert advice: preferably the sort that doesn't require her to give up any favorite foods or seek out professional help or do anything differently than she's already doing.   A handy capsule, she was hoping, featuring some obscure combination of phytonutrients that would not only to solve the bloating problem, but also melt belly fat, increase energy, build better biceps, and whiten her...

Hepatitis A virus infections associated with berry and pomegranate mix
An outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections in eight US states has been attributed to consumption of Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend frozen berry and pomegranate mix purchased from Costco markets. Since March 2013, 118 individuals have acquired the infection and 80% report having eaten this fruit product. Townsend Farms has recalled some lots of this product because, according to the producer, one of the ingredients of the blend, “pomegranate seeds processed in Turkey, may be linked to an illness outbreak outside of the United States”. The Food and Drug Administration will soon begin testing f...
