EMTALA Question
If you have a service available at your hospital and they refuse to consult on a patient and recommend transfer to another facility is this an EMTALA violation? For example you are at a community hospital and you have an MVA patient with an isolated injury (say hip fracture or minor SAH) without any need for a trauma surgery. Can ortho or neurosurgery refuse the patient based on mechanism when they are credentialed for the appropriate procedure and management does not change based on... Best specialty for the burnt out, jaded 3rd year who has little passion left for medicine
Canadian MD student so we don’t do any of the steps. If you look at my previous posts, I was a hardcore ortho vs neurosurg gunner for the first 3 years. I’ve done as much exploring, shadowing and have completed all of my rotations at this point. I went through ortho just before 4th year electives and realized I was becoming more and more unhappy every day. The aggressive culture, the slavery, 1 in 4 call + staying post-call showed me that’s no way to live for me. As much as I enjoy... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Resigned from neurosurgery residency for personal reasons, would appreciate some advice/help
Hi, I'm an IMG who matched in neurosurgery residency. I did 6 out of 7 years and resigned in my last year. I was given the option to be dismissed or resign, and I felt that resigning was the better option (even though they're both bad) and would place me on good terms with the department, as opposed to fighting it out in court, pissing them off, and still have a chance to lose. Before I continue, I will summarize the incidents. These happened back to back within a 6 months period. Up to that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

International Student with International Undergraduate Degree Plan to Get a Med School
I would like advice from you all, I am Karam from Egypt. I am a medical student at Cairo University, Egypt, but I stopped immediately after the third year and decided to take a gap year in August 2022 to prepare to apply to universities in the US, specifically ivy schools, and during this year I shadowed neurosurgeons in my University Hospitals, and during this year I was volunteered as a research assistant at a number of top universities such as Weill Cornell, Cambridge, and McMaster, and I... Is it bad if I don ’t find being in the OR very useful on surgery rotation? Not going into surgery
I made a depressing/lazy post not that long ago talking about hating surgery and not doing anything to be proactive. After that vent post, I realized my mindset was off and I started focusing on what I’m *supposed* to get out of it. Since then, I have been loving clinic and floor management. I am most interested in IM vs Neuro, and I love managing and assessing patients. I love determining if a patient has a surgical indication at all in new patient clinic, and then trying to determine if... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
