How is ortho spine research/LORs seen by neurosurgery programs?
Hi all, I'm trying to learn more about different specialties I may be interested in, including what makes for a strong application to programs in each field. One of these fields is neurosurgery, but I have heard that this is one of the specialties for which starting specialty-specific research early on in med school can be a significant advantage. In particular, I've read that neurosurgery programs do not look at research outside of their field as favorably as programs in other fields might... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

For top residency spots in GS or Neurosurgery, which Medical Schools in the UK would make you someone they'll seriously consider?
Meaning top residency spots (eg. MGH) and/or residency spots in competitive cities (eg. NYC, Chicago, Boston) in General Surgery or Neurosurgery. Of course no school is going to be a ticket to Matching in these but some schools might give an extra boost on name recognition, being able to use connections the schools have with those top institutions and obviously the professors and research opportunities are going to be different at Cambridge than at Aston. But either way, which UK schools... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Negotiating with an academic pain group- all advice welcome!
I always wanted to go back to my home residency program to join the pain group. With recent departures in their pain group and two new neurosurgery spine attendings, I know they are quite interested in recruiting me and I feel certain that I can generate the department a lot of money. However, the contract offer was very underwhelming with regard to base salary (10%ile in my area), productivity bonus (they placed a ceiling on how much I can earn- a low ceiling), an expectation to work 5 days... Tips for matching in California after doing medical school elsewhere
Currently in medical school in the Midwest, but want to come back home to California for residency. Other than doing well in medical school (good clinical grades, good step 2 score, research publications), is there anything I can specifically do to increase my chances for matching in CA? Ideally Northern California? If this varies somewhat by specialty, here's what I'm considering: Neurology Neurosurgery Radiology Endocrinology Hepatology Allergy/immunology Pulmonary critical care... Miami vs UMass vs MCW
Hey all! As second look days come closer, I am making a choice between three distinct regions of the country and three fairly different schools. As as student hoping to go into neurosurgery, I am considering the impact of school choice on future specialty match (all three have neurosurgery departments). Miami: Pros: - $10k academic scholarship, making Cost of Attendance equal to MCW - weather, which I don't really see as an allure since I grew up a hockey player... Neurosurgery — Failed to Match. Thoughts?
Hello, I’m not sure where to post this for thoughts. I received 6 interviews for neurosurgery. Initially, I only received 2, but after emailing program directors and positions opening up after a couple of months, I received 4 more interviews. I thought they all went great and I was generally well received. I scored 261 on STEP 1 and 267 on STEP 2. I had excellent LORs. I had only 2 major publications, and my medical school did not have a home neurosurgery program. I also only did one away... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DO Neurosurgery chances
Hello all, I am reaching out as a current third year medical student at an osteopathic school. Like most people I entered medical school not knowing which speciality I wanted to pursue. I always thought I would focus on my course work and board preparation as I did not want those to be limiting factors in my decision on my career. Beginning at the end of my second year and more strongly during third year I fell in love with the field of neurosurgery. Here are my stats Board scores (I'm... Which is more competitive (overall) for a DO applicant: PM & R vs Neurology?
I am doing some specialty research and was wondering which of these two specialties is more competitive. Google tells me PM&R as it is often cited as one of the least competitive specialties having low board scores and not much interest by sources like medschoolinsiders.com and medicalaid.org. However other sources tell me that Neuro is less competitive based on number of seats. Bemo puts PM&R up as one of the more competitive specialties up there with Neurosurg and Derm (Most... Input from someone who matched into neurosurgery?
Hello! This is my first post on the medical student side of SDN so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong place. I am currently choosing which medical school to attend and have found myself in a unique situation regarding a neurosurgery program. I'm pretty sure which school I'm leaning towards but wanted to gain the input of someone who recently matched neurosurgery. Please PM me if you matched nsgy and have time to answer a few questions! Thank you in advance!! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is it worth it for me to do additional summer research?
In my life before med school, I got 7 publications. In med school, class rank-wise, I'm more or less around in the middle so far I got an opportunity to do summer research where chances are, I could maybe get 1 more publication for a total of 8 and be done with it. How much benefit would having this extra done publication during med school be (in addition to my pre-med school pubs)? If my specialty choices are between: 1. Radiology 2. Neurology 3. General surgery, And chances are, I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interventional Neurology
Hey, I'm a Neuro intern currently considering interventional Neuro. However, I will only go this route if there's diversity in the cases I can manage. This field is exclusively left to Neurosurg at my institution so I can't really get a decent perspective from a Neuro standpoint there. Forgive the naivete of the question but is there such a thing as limitations to the types of cases providers can see based on their specialty? For example, would I be limited to just thrombectomies if I were... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Case discussion
70ym has stable c spine fracture (don’t remember the details but neurosurgery wants in Miami J at all times and to revisit outpatient in a few months kind of thing). Presents with cardiogenic shock from critical Aortic stenosis. On low dose NE, BP 90/60s but not intubated. Let’s say cardiologists wants to do a TAVR, your choice as to general vs MAC. Would you do general upfront (AFOI) or do MAC? If MAC, how worried would you be to emergently intubate someone with a high risk procedure and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

PM & R/Pain in an Ortho Practice
A question for the ortho group on SDN. I’ve often heard of / seen PM&R/Pain in surgical practices, particularly ortho and neurosurgery. As an orthopedic surgeon, what are skills or things you look for when adding a PM&R and/or pain physician to your practice? How do they fit into your practice? Thanks in advance. Join research now or wait until M3 year?
Currently in dedicated, likely to pass step 1 with the way studying is going and how my scores are panning out. I was planning to contact institutions I am interested in for residency to see if I could get involved in some research. I worry that although I may have more time now, I am hesitant about jumping on a project and then not having time for it when M3 starts, especially since I'm starting on surgery and OB. The last thing I want to do is make a bad impression at places I hope to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
